Candied orange peel - Floral - Smooth // This is a modified version of So Fresh So Hazy from R&B Brewing (our sister brewery), which is the fresh hop version of their Hipster Haze IPA. We added dried Comet from Prairie Mountain Hops in Manitoba with both dried and fresh Comet from Bredenhof Farms in BC’s Fraser Valley. Flaked wheat and flaked oats give this beer a bright haze. On March 24, 1603 James VI of Scotland ascended to the thrones of England and Ireland, becoming James I. This act of union united the peat smoked malty beers of Scotland with Irish yeast and English ale just as hops were becoming popular in the British Isles. This first experimental batch of Union reaches across the centuries, celebrating both the British and Columbia parts of BC by combining historical malts from Scotland and England with fresh local hops bred in the Pacific Northwest. Jean Sans Peur (1371-1419), John the Fearless in English, was the second Duke of Bourgogne, a key figure in the Hundred Years War and sometimes (falsely) credited as the inventor of hopped beer. Though he didn’t invent it, he was a driving force behind the adoption of hops in brewing in France and (then French-controlled) southern Belgium. This strong, fearless and complex Belgian ale pays homage to traditional Belgian Abbey beers with house made candi sugar, and to the brewing innovation supported by an ambitious Duke who had hops for his personal emblem. Bready - Floral // Lunch at Barry's is a fresh hop English Mild. This is an easy drinker that punches above it’s weight in body and flavour. We boiled this for 3 hours instead of the usual hour to concentrate the wort and caramelize the sugars. Fresh Goldings hops straight from Barry’s garden (Barry is the “B” in R&B Brewing) were added once we’d cooled the wort to 80 degrees to give this brew a nice hop character without extra bitterness. The beer we know and love today was traditionally brewed without any hops. This was called gruit - beer flavoured with herbs like juniper twigs, heather, mint, ginger, cinnamon or star anise. In the 14th Century the Habsburgs (a central European empire) held a monopoly on gruit tax. In 1332 brewers in the franco-belgian town of Poperinge decided enough with the gruit tax and started brewing beer instead, using hops from the St. Bertin abbey in place of gruit herbs. St. Bertins’ Saison celebrates the monks that helped Belgian brewing become what it is today with a historical beer that part traditional gruit, part fresh hopped franco-Belgian saison. Read Less

The Hidden People (Huldufólk) are the backbone of Icelandic folklore. These elves live throughout the countryside, appearing only when they want to be seen. Following their advice can mean the difference between life and death in a rugged, fragile landscape with unpredictable weather. Though there are (probably) no Huldufólk in BC, there are hops growing wild all around us - appearing only to those with a brewer’s eye. Modern cultivated hops today are female but a century ago many farmers kept a few males as well because they would cause females to seed, becoming heavier (and selling for more). Some of these seedy hops would fall off railcars and grow wild next to the track. That’s where the hops for this brew were found. Read Less

Fresh Hop Edition. Peach, stone fruit, big and in-your-face yet smooth.

This first ever beer from Project Hop was made in collaboration with R&B Brewing all the way back in pre-pandemic January 2020. It uses a blend of hops from Billy Goat Hop Farms showcasing the terroir of Montrose, Colorado. The Crystal hops produced by this farm have big aromas of white peach, backed up with a blend of other Billy Goat hops to give the beer a secondary stone fruit character. Hops were added early in the boil for bittering, again when the wort has cooled to 80 degrees, then dry-hopped during active fermentation and again post-fermentation. This version is a duplicate of the original GOAT, but with extra fresh hops added post-boil. Read Less

Our take on the NEIPA (New England IPA) explores east coast terroir by using only Vermont hops produced by Champlain Valley Hops in Starksborog, VT.

Vermont is one of the original hop growing regions of North America. Their hop industry, the second biggest on the continent at the turn of the 20th century, was killed by a combination of prohibition and the centralization of beer and hop production by big breweries in the post-prohibition era.

The hazy IPA craze is the perfect opportunity for craft brewers to support the craft growers leading Vermont’s hop comeback. Shouldn’t east coast IPAs use east coast hops? We think so, and so will you after tasting what Vermont has to offer. Read Less
