Can you tell us more about the hosting provider? Company name, type of server you use, OS on the server, standard software available on server? Commented May 27, 2015 at 13:56
  • Do you only have ftp access to the remote server? Who administers it? You say you have no root access on your local computer, but do you on the remote? What operating systems are the two machines running? What kind of access do you need? Command line? Graphical? Read only? Please edit your question and clarify. Commented May 27, 2015 at 14:08
