So I went to HHN two weekends in a row this year - first on Saturday, Sept. 29 with my boyfriend, and then again on Friday, Oct. 5 with a group of friends. I have a year pass, so I was able to get two tickets for the price of one, basically.
The first weekend was rather disappointing compared to previous years. Based on my second visit, I think it was mostly because it was opening weekend and they just weren't prepared like they should have been. We were able to do five houses - we walked right into Jason's house when it was still daylight, then waited 45 minutes for Jack's Funhouse. We saw the Freak Show, which I wasn't a fan of at all. Bring back better scarezones and ditch the extra shows. After that, we waited 60 minutes for Freddy's and after a rain shower cleared out some of the lines, waited 30 minutes for PsychoScarpepy and 5 minutes for the Thing. The "scarezone" outside the Mummy was practically empty on opening weekend, the chainsaw guys were restricted solely to Earthquake (which I understand is a continuation of the Texas Chainsaw House, but still... roaming chainsaw guys make for great paranoia and add that "I'm never safe" feeling), and the area by Shrek was empty. There were too many deadzones lacking fog, music or scary things during opening weekend.
NOW - fast forward to Oct. 5. It was POURING for the first hour we were there, which meant the park was pretty deserted. The longest wait we had all night was 30 minutes to ride the Mummy. All the houses had a 10 minute wait at the max. Dead Silence actually had a 0 minute wait when we walked by, and some guys actually pushed us to go inside it was so empty. This of course makes for a great park experience, because we were able to do 7 houses (Home for Christmas was closed??), 4 rides and 2 shows (Bill n Ted's - which is EXCELLENT this year - and Rocky Horror) in the period of 6 hours. Pretty impressive.
Universal also fixed a lot of issues that I had from the first week - the added more fog machines, more cast members (the Mummy area was packed), another scarezone in the Shrek area, and more videos accompanying the houses. Plus, the 3D glasses for Jack's Funhouse actually had an HHN design on it this time around (the first week they were just plain).
Now... on to my thoughts on individual houses, if you're so inclined:
( Right this way...Collapse )Overall, I thought the houses were MUCH better than last year, but Universal needs to focus their efforts/money on bringing back the atmosphere overall. Leave the expensive movie characters behind and spend more money on elaborate scarezones. The scarezones are an important part of the experience, especially on nights when the lines for the houses are ridiculous. Scarezones of the past were clever and well-planned. That needs to happen again. It was too easy to feel "safe" this year.
