2019 movie goals cont'd

I definitely haven't watched 23 new movies since my last movies post, but I think I've done reasonably well?

— SEPTEMBER —

Fast Color: I watched this and the next two movies at the Boston Women's Film Festival. I was surprised that I'd never heard about it, but then they introduced the movie by saying that it got shafted by Unnamed Distribution Company (i.e., Lionsgate), who put in zero money to market it, so you should watch it! It's available to stream on both Hulu and Amazon Prime. I think describing it as a superhero movie doesn't accurately convey the feel of the movie? Also, I fucking love Gugu Mbatha-Raw.

Paradise Hills: Saw this with [personal profile] hermionesviolin. The costume/set design was incredible. Plot/writing could definitely have used some work, but it was super queer, so I can forgive a lot. Available on Kanopy!

Swallow: I'm kind of weirdly obsessed with pica? Which this movie was only using as a metaphor and not to accurately portray the disorder, but that's what piqued my interest. Despite that, it's a very...quiet film? For most of the movie. Which isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I enjoyed it, and I super loved the ending. Beautifully shot, and the cinematographer was there for an in-person Q&A afterwards, which was also interesting. Not currently available as it's going to be released March next year.

— OCTOBER —

Always Be My Maybe: I...didn't love this. I think it was hyped up too much for me, and it was also pitched as a rom-com, which I guess it technically was, but it was missing a lot of the emotional beats that I look for in rom-coms.

God's Own Country: Loved it. Johnny is a disaster gay, and he's very, very lucky to have Gheorghe.

Falling Inn Love: Mindless fun rom-com. Also, biracial endgame couple!

Logan Lucky**: It was...interesting. I'm neutral on heist movies. Possibly worth it solely to see Daniel Criag put on a Southern accent.

— NOVEMBER —

Parasite:
This was super intense and a very, very good film, and I never want to watch it again.

Doctor Sleep: Saw it with [personal profile] bironic and enjoyed it having only seen The Shining and not having read the book.

*Captain Marvel**

American Factory: My workplace put on a showing of this for staff/faculty/students, and so I fucked off work for a few hours to watch it. Really interesting documentary that did its best to show the humanity of everyone involved, but not very narratively strong. Which I suppose isn't really the point, but it does leave you feeling a bit adrift after watching it.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood: Went into this knowing basically nothing about the movie except that it was about Mr. Rogers and ended up crying through pretty much the whole thing. Liked it more than I thought I would.

— DECEMBER —

*The Mummy (1999)**: Always and forever a classic.

Knives and Skin: Saw this with [personal profile] hermionesviolin at The Brattle. It was...certainly a movie. I loved loved loved the colors/the overall cinematography, and the choral covers of pop songs were used super effectively, but it doesn't quite pull off the Twin Peaks feel. Has the benefit of being way more queer and diverse than Twin Peaks, though.

*Die Hard: Per tradition, our department director put this on in one of the conference rooms on the Friday before our holiday break.

Frozen II: I've been listening to Into the Unknown on repeat for the last hour, so there's that. The movie was fine. Less gay content than I'd been led to believe (100% still all subtext). I do really love Elsa's character arc in this, though.

— SOME POINT IN 2019 BUT PROBABLY NOVEMBER? —

Spider-Man: Far from Home: Forgot to put this on my calendar. I continue to be extremely charmed by Tom Holland and in love with Zendaya. Jake Gyllenhaal was great in this; he's really leaned into his chaotic energy.

**Fannish Movie Night movie

14 new movies and 17 total! Definitely respectable, considering my average was like two new movies a month before this. I'm going to try and squeeze at least one more in (I still need to see Knives Out, I do want to watch The Rise of Skywalker despite the very mixed things I've heard, and I have Jennifer's Body from Netflix DVD).
