Hi, my name's Mia and I've always wanted to work for the UN. I was a third culture kid, so I pretty much can't imagine myself working a not-so-diverse environment on a daily basis, plus I want to help out in the public sector. I've wanted it so much that I've been killing myself trying to learn various languages and I have an undergrad and grad degree that's pretty helpful for my plans.
However, in grad school I learned that there are legal documents (SecGen bulletins) that regulate so-called "prohibited conduct". It includes bullying, abuse of authority, and a whole load of scary crap that I can't even imagine happening in the UN. It's just so not like the UN for things like that to happen (esp. internally). But then a friend of mine sent me this link: http://www.unpost.org (pretty appalling stuff).
So anyone here who's actually worked/is currently working at the UN care to share your experiences at the UN? What was it like? Good? Bad? How did you feel about it? I'm actually prepping myself so as not to be shocked by the reality once I get there. I'd appreciate your help in putting me into perspective.
XV Саммит глав государств и правительств Движения неприсоединения (Non-Aligned Movement - NAM) проходит в курортном городе Шарм-эль-Шейхе (Египет) 13-16 июля 2009 г. Движение неприсоединения (ДН) – международная организация, объединяющая 119 государств-участников по принципу неучастия в военных блоках, 16 государств и несколько организаций в статусе наблюдателей. Организация Объединенных Наций также имеет статус наблюдателя ДН. Россия не входит в число стран-участников. ДН было создано в 1961 г. и формировалось в условиях противостояния двух военно-политических лагерей во главе с США и СССР. В сентябре 2006 г. XIV Саммит ДН принимал г. Гавана (Куба), председателем Движения на трехлетний период был избран кубинский лидер Фидель Кастро, не присутствовавший на конференции из-за проблем со здоровьем. Исполняющий обязанности руководителя Кубы Рауль Кастро в своем выступлении на Саммите призвал неприсоединившиеся страны, «составляющие две трети членов ООН», сплотиться в борьбе против однополярного мира, в котором главенствующую роль играют США; он также призвал защищать «право наших стран на мирное использование ядерной энергии», вместе с тем высказавшись за «полное и всеобщее разоружение, в том числе ядерное».
В ходе двухдневного заседания главы МИД стран-участников ДН или их представители, обсудят девиз XV Саммита «Международная солидарность ради мира и развития», перспективы развития ДН, реформы в рамках ООН, мирный процесс на Востоке, международный финансовый кризис, энергетические проблемы, климатические изменения, продовольственную безопасность, ядерную проблему и другие актуальные международные и региональные вопросы. Участники заседания попытаются достичь единства мнений по итоговому документу Саммита и по широкому кругу вопросов, представляющих интерес для всех стран-членов организации.
Известно, что неприсоединившиеся страны, неудовлетворенные положением вещей в мире, своим экономическим состоянием, сложившейся однополярной системой и глобальным лидерством США выступили на XIV гаванской конференции ДН с явных антиамериканских позиций. За три года прошедшие после XIV конференции ДН в политике США произошли и происходят значительные перемены.
Бывший Генеральный секретарь ООН Кофи Аннан тогда согласился с участниками Саммита в том, что Совет Безопасности ООН должен в большей степени прислушиваться к мнению и учитывать интересы менее влиятельных по сравнению с ведущими державами стран. «Совет Безопасности необходимо реформировать - ради развивающихся стран и ради самих Объединенных Наций», - заявил К.Аннан. По его словам, было необходимо ликвидировать «дефицит демократии» и не допустить, чтобы международное сообщество потеряло веру в нейтралитет и независимость Совбеза. 15 июля 2009 г. Саммит ДН посетит Генеральный секретарь ООН Пан Ги Мун и, вероятно, внесет свои предложения в направление дальнейшего развития СБ ООН, как механизма, призванного гарантировать соблюдение баланса интересов всех членов международного сообщества.
Уже совсем скоро в стенах Российского государственного гуманитарного университета пройдёт значимое событие для столичной студенческой жизни – первая Московская модель ООН РГГУ.
Это, с одной стороны, серьёзная конференция, на которой обсуждаются важнейшие вопросы международных отношений, а с другой – увлекательная ролевая игра, в ходе которой участники перевоплощаются в дипломатов и продумывают тактику на несколько шагов вперёд, стараясь обойти своих соперников.
Целых два дня – 29 и 30 ноября – студенты московских вузов будут «сражаться» друг с другом по правилам международной дипломатии.

I am sponsoring a young girl in Armenia and I'm in the Navy. I want to know if Armenians are for or against the US military- i know as a country, we have a good relationship, but i don't know if they have a positive outlook on our miitary.

I've just come across this community and am heartened to see that it's active! I am a final year undergraduate Law student from Scotland, taking UN Law and writing my dissertation on Security Council reform (original maybe not, interesting yes). Once again, I'm heading up the Press Team for the Catalonia Model United Nations conference in Barcelona, Spain, from May 2nd to the 5th. I'm looking for Reporters, Photographers, an Artist, and an Assistant Layout Editor for the daily newspaper.
The day in the life of a Press Staff member looks like this: wake up at the crack of dawn in your paid-for sweet hostel room, get to the swank hotel conference center before the Secretary-General, write articles, takes pictures, draw pretty pictures and political cartoons, or lay out our newspaper all day, then party until sunrise. If you want to speak to people who have lived this insane week before, let me know, and I'll put them in contact with you.
The United Nations Association Spain is sponsoring this conference and pays the conference fees and hostel rooms for the duration of the conference for staff members. Successful applicants are flexible, dependable, and not averse to hard work. Successful applicants only need to pay their way to Barcelona and for food.
Press Staff also have way more much fun than normal delegates, although if you are of the stoic Chair persuasion, there's spots for you too. I can put you in contact with the Conference Manager if you're interested in apply as a ho-hum regular staff member.
This year's Clarion newspaper and staff will be bigger, better, and pimpier than ever! The deadline for applications to me is March 15th.
