Last week, the Secretary of State for Transport announced a "small error" in the Government's aviation modelling. 4MtCO2 is not small. While it can appear less significant in the context of economy-wide emissions over the five years of the Sixth Carbon Budget, its significance for aviation is much bigger: 1. It amounts to 2.5% of total aviation emissions in the Sixth Carbon Budget 2. The ‘error’ was getting bigger year-on-year, reaching 1.7MtCO2 in 2037 3. Instead of being able to claim the Government’s decarbonisation strategy is ahead of the (Jet Zero) curve, it’s now just tracking it. Flights delayed as technical fault hits London air traffic control ⚡ Air traffic in the London control area is facing delays following a technical issue at NATS Swanwick, the UK’s air traffic control centre. The problem, confirmed in a statement issued at 16:05 UK time on July 30, has led to a restriction on the number of aircraft permitted to fly in the region. [PRESS RELEASE] The 2025 Airport Industry Connectivity Report is out now, revealing that slower recovery in air connectivity is hampering wider European competitiveness, cohesion, and global positioning - 𝙥𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙖 𝙣𝙚𝙬 𝙖𝙫𝙞𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮.     The 2025 report reveals that air connectivity (direct + indirect air connectivity) is trailing passenger traffic recovery, with only half of European countries having exceeded their 2019 air connectivity levels. Significant performance gaps exist amongst national markets: from +73% down to -43% (vs. 2019). ✈️ Improving departure predictability in the European air traffic network: London Gatwick Airport (LGW) 🇬🇧, the UK's second busiest hub, has just become an A-CDM airport & now transmits its Departure Planning Information (#DPI) messages to the EUROCONTROL Network Manager (#NM ). 📡 ✨ This integration marks a major step forward for departure predictability & planning accuracy at this complex and high-density airport. The data integration significantly enhances situational awareness on the network aircraft turnaround & pre-departure process - and directly supports our #thinkNetwork 🧠 ✈️ approach, as local changes have an impact on the network as a whole. Despite its single-runway configuration, LGW maintains a remarkably high throughput, making the real-time Target Take-Off Times (#TTOTs), taxi-times, and off-block updates even more valuable for the network. ⏰🚀 🤝🌟 This achievement was made possible through the collaboration between LGW, NATS & EUROCONTROL. The word politics refers to the governance of the polis — the structure through which we organise ourselves collectively. And housing sits right at the centre of that structure, because shelter is not optional. It’s foundational. Now, when you look at HMOs in the UK right now, what’s striking is that criticism is emerging from both ends of the political spectrum. And that should make you pause. On parts of the left — you hear it particularly from voices aligned with the Green Party of England and Wales — the argument is moral in tone. Housing is framed as a human right, and private landlords are often portrayed as extracting value from vulnerability. The narrative is that profit and shelter should not coexist. The logical extension of that argument is increased state ownership, or the removal of private landlordism altogether. That position is rooted in a concern about exploitation. And exploitation is a real phenomenon. It exists. But here’s the problem: when you universalise that accusation, you collapse distinctions between responsible operators and irresponsible ones. You replace nuance with ideology. Then you move to the right. In rhetoric you’ll hear around groups such as Restore UK, the focus shifts. The concern isn’t primarily about landlords extracting rent; it’s about immigration, cultural cohesion, and strain on local services. HMOs become symbolic — not just buildings, but indicators of demographic pressure and rapid change. Again, there’s something real there. Infrastructure can be strained. Communities can feel destabilised by sudden shifts. In both cases, the HMO becomes a proxy for deeper anxieties. On the left: inequality and power imbalance. On the right: identity, borders, social cohesion. And in the middle of that are actual properties — and actual people. Young professionals. Key workers. People relocating. Individuals who cannot yet afford self-contained flats in constrained markets. The danger in political discourse is abstraction. It’s very easy to talk about “landlords” or “immigrants” or “the state” in monolithic terms. It’s much harder to grapple with trade-offs. If you remove private landlords, do you have the state capacity to replace the housing supply at speed and scale? If you dramatically restrict migration, do you solve housing shortages — or simply expose deeper supply constraints? These are not trivial questions. You can criticise poor standards — and you should. You can criticise regulatory excess — and you should examine that too. But if both ends of the political spectrum are attacking the same phenomenon for entirely different reasons, that tells you something important: housing is downstream of much larger structural tensions. The serious question isn’t whether HMOs are politically comfortable. It’s whether we are prepared to confront the complex reality that produced them.

In Today’s Financial Times, Global Transport Correspondent Peter Campbell considers the challenges faced in delivering expansion at Heathrow Airport. https://lnkd.in/emTFGSdT   The regulatory failings of the existing model are highlighted by Peter: “Airlines argue this is symptomatic of an airport that is incentivised to spend lavishly, safe in the knowledge that it can recoup its outlay through higher charges on them and, indirectly, their customers.”   In the article, IAG CEO, Luis Gallego, points to the need for expansion that is affordable and deliverable:   The plans are “not affordable for airlines or their customers and risk failing as airlines won’t be able to afford to sustain more flights, with serious economic consequences.”

Delay Repay is one of the most visible “moments that matter” after disruption and for many passengers it’s still too complex and too easy to abandon. That’s why it’s encouraging to see more industry voices calling attention to unclaimed compensation and the wider impact on the passenger experience - including recent commentary from Trainline, among others. The underlying point is bigger than any single organisation - when claiming is confusing or inconsistent, passengers lose out and confidence erodes. This discussion convened prominent experts from the aviation and border management sectors to address a critical issue faced by airlines and regulatory authorities: how to effectively manage #passengers encountering entry #difficulties and to improve #migration policies through better information management.
