The book makes the case that your attitude and approach matter more than your innate talent. Adopt a growth mindset and an attitude "that its only a matter of time until I figure it out" as one of the paths to mastery.   Here are a few highlights and recommend reading the book for a lot more:   🔸 Get in the arena - Accelerating your learning by being brave enough to get in the arena and use your knowledge as you acquire it. Embrace the discomfort and awkwardness to allow for fast-tracked learning and growth. 🔸 Become a sponge - absorb (ask thoughtful questions and take detailed notes), filter (work smart as well as hard) and adapt (change your behaviour and approach based on feedback) while you work towards mastering your chosen skill. 🔸 Use Scaffolding - in learning then scaffolding is a temporary structure that can help you scale higher. A coach / teacher offers initial instruction and then remove the support. The goal being to shift responsibility to you so you can support your own independent learning approach. 🔸 Filter who you listen to - the book emphasizes the importance of community, mentorship and collaboration for unlocking your hidden potential. It challenges the myth of the lone genius, showing that success often comes from giving and receiving support. Remember In the words of the great psychologist Ted Lasso “if you’re Comfortable you’re doing it wrong”. 2025: A Year of Big Ideas at Data Book Club 🚀 Our Data Book Club community tackled everything from debating intuition versus analysis, explored how AI and humans can team up, celebrated diverse voices in tech, and challenged ourselves to think bigger. Here are our top takeaways from a year of lively debate and applied learning: 🤖 Human + AI: Better Together - Our “AI double feature” explored how rapidly evolving AI is reshaping work – and what it means for us as humans. I’m seeing the technology industry fail initiatives not because of ambition, but because fundamentals are being ignored. As AI moves rapidly from concept to execution in many places, the industry risks mistaking innovation for progress. New capability doesn’t remove the need for disciplined delivery — it increases it. Too often, terms like “we’ll do it agile” or “we need speed to market” are thrown around as justification to rush into build mode without clarity on value, outcomes, or what success actually looks like. Speed without intent isn’t agility — it’s chaos. What works isn’t new or fashionable — it’s disciplined execution: clear business ownership and engagement, strong planning cadence (scheduling and agile boards), well‑defined business and process analysis, experienced PM and PMO leadership, active risk management, sound financial management and transparent governance, deep technical expertise, strong change management, and focused testing — aligned as one accountable team. When a cloud region experiences disruption, both resilience and regulatory alignment face significant challenges. The recent UAE cloud downtime led to: • Customer-facing applications going offline • Payment and transaction failures • API timeouts and integration breakdowns • Delayed reporting and reduced operational visibility For many organizations, this was the real test of whether DR/BCP was operational not just documented. Key lessons for leaders: 1. Multi-AZ is not a resilience strategy Availability within one region does not protect against regional disruption. Critical workloads in a single region remain concentrated risk. 2. Backups ≠ tested recovery Replication only works if failover is automated, recovery timelines are validated, and teams have rehearsed the process. Resilience must be practiced. 3. RTO/RPO must reflect real-world events Recovery assumptions often focus on system failures not physical infrastructure disruption. If expectations are hours but reality is longer, that gap is a business risk. 4. Data privacy and residency matter during crisis If regulated PII cannot leave the country, cross-border failover may not be legally viable. Resilience that breaches data residency laws creates a second crisis. 5. Cloud concentration risk is a board-level issue Single-cloud, single-region efficiency creates dependency. Leaders must evaluate multi-region (or compliant in-country) resilience, contractual clarity, and third-party oversight. Executive reflection: If your primary cloud region were unavailable tomorrow for more than a day and customer PII could not legally leave the country would you continue operating compliantly, or face operational and regulatory exposure? If the answer isn’t clear, that’s your next risk conversation. Resilience is not just uptime. I recall getting lost in awe at Leke’s barbershop - was it the dexterity in his craft (he was one-hand) or at people dozing off while he reformed their looks?… Well, I recently almost fell off the chair myself. That moment was different. Nobody prepares you for the quiet fatigue that comes with leadership, especially when you're the one everyone looks to for clarity, speed, and direction. As a team lead, it’s easy to slip into “maintenance mode”: ✔️ Morning syncs ✔️ Back-to-back meetings ✔️ Progress tracking ✔️ Firefighting ✔️ Reporting ✔️ More meetings You start cutting out “distractions” like breaks, social catch-ups, or rest-only to end up running on fumes. Leadership isn't just about ensuring deliverables are met. It’s about carrying the emotional weight of the team, keeping morale up, and still showing up with energy. Balance isn't a myth—but it has to be intentional. Rest is part of the strategy. Burnout helps no one. So, if you’re in leadership and running on autopilot, this is your reminder: Recharge. Reflect. Reset. Even leaders need care too.

Love this, Aparna. Thanks for sharing. By viewing GCC/ enterprise IT as cost centers, organizations end-up with discussions focused on cost cutting than value creation. To transition IT from cost center to profit center, CXOs aligning IT goals with business KPI is important. This will help transition enterprises to be more technology led with digital differentiators and accelerators. GPS and Geolocation: One of the Most Transformative Technologies Shaping Services in Oman In Oman, GPS and geolocation have become more than navigation tools. They have forced transformation across industries and reshaped consumer behavior. What once made it easier to find a location is now the backbone of how services are delivered and consumed. Food delivery illustrates this shift. Platforms like Talabat have not only made ordering more convenient but also redefined how restaurants operate. For many outlets, delivery has become as critical as dine-in, with customers expecting speed, reliability, and real-time tracking. Logistics tells a similar story. Deliveries are now faster and easier, creating the foundation for e-commerce growth and allowing even small home-based businesses to scale. GPS has also solved a long-standing challenge in Oman: the absence of consistent addresses. With a simple live location pin, customers can now receive goods and services at their doorstep with accuracy and ease. Tourism and hospitality are adapting too, with private owners posting their homes for short-term rentals. Banks use geolocation to improve fraud detection, while healthcare providers are experimenting with location-based services for home care and emergencies. The result is a new baseline of visibility, immediacy, and personalization. Yet expectations are rising further as consumers hear about drone deliveries and self-driving taxis. The challenge ahead for service providers in Oman is to keep pace with this momentum while maintaining trust and sustainable growth. The future is location-driven, and businesses that ignore this shift risk being left behind. They may also be failing to think transformatively and strategically.

I have been having some very interesting conversations with my peers in the industry about the importance of centralised Lakes and Data Products which need to go hand in hand. This picture depicts the example extremely well: ⭐️ If we build a data lake and allow full consumption then it will be like everyone going to the lake to fill up their own buckets of water ⭐️ The resulting impact is we don’t know if one person has a bigger bucket or if someone is scooping water that could be contaminated ⭐️ Instead by building data products you can standardise the naming convention which makes it easier to understand what someone is consuming ⭐️ In addition by making sure the packaging comes with clear information about the purity of the data (a bit like the water) the end user is fully aware of what the data can be used for ⭐️ This also helps reduce data consumption from (a) many to many hand-offs to (b) one to many hand-offs; the net effect is a more simplified data flow Let me know your thoughts and if this resonates #data #ai

Resistance often isn’t voiced — it’s embedded in subtle hesitations, territorial behaviors, or quiet opt-outs. Navigating this terrain requires empathy, coalition-building, and a reframe: automation as an amplifier, not an eraser. 2. Data Sovereignty & Institutional Trust AI thrives on access, but data remains the most guarded asset. Concerns around governance, exposure, and compliance aren’t edge cases — they’re central. Elevating trust frameworks and co-designing safeguards with legal and security counterparts is not a checkbox — it’s a precondition. 3. Operational Disruption AI can disrupt with elegance or with friction — it depends on whether the process realities have been honored. Institutional memory, exceptions, and tacit know-how often don’t live in documentation. Start with pilots that respect context, and design feedback loops into the rollout. The promise of AI is seductive. But its success hinges less on model precision and more on internal choreography. If AI feels like magic, it’s probably doing too much thinking for you. In How to Stop AI from Killing Your Critical Thinking, Advait Sarkar says something that lands uncomfortably close to home: When we let AI do the thinking for us: • We generate fewer ideas • We challenge them less • We remember less • And, over time, we trust ourselves less No big collapse. Just gradual cognitive outsourcing. What I appreciated most is that this wasn’t an anti- AI talk. It was a design critique. Sarkar talks about Tools for Thought: AI not as an answer machine, but as a thinking partner. AI that interrupts you with: • What assumption are you making? • What would a smart critic say? • What’s another way to look at this? In his examples, and with the prototype he build: (Tools for thought) people stayed materially engaged: They read the document themselves. They constructed the argument themselves. They owned the decision themselves. AI didn’t replace thinking. It forced better thinking. And this is where it gets interesting: This isn’t a tooling debate. It’s a governance and resilience issue. Questions we should be asking more explicitly: - Where are humans still genuinely deciding — and where are they just approving AI output? - Which decisions should remain stubbornly human, even if AI is “good enough”? - Are we optimising for speed… or for judgment? - Are our people getting better at thinking — or just better at prompting? Because when real complexity hits (and it always does), organisations don’t fail because they lack data. They fail because their cognitive muscles have atrophied. That’s not a tech choice. That’s a leadership one.
