1. MEETING

This week's meeting theme is Hapa Family Experiences!! (my personal
favorite!) Break out the family photo albums and the quirky stories (we love
the "how my parents met" ones), experiences, etc...

2. JANUARY BIRTHDAYS PARTY

So it's come to our attention that a LARGE number of hapa club members had their birthdays in the month of January (thank you facebook)... What better way to celebrate all these beautiful multiracial births then to throw a JANUARY BIRTHDAYS BASH?!

Come THIS FRIDAY, January 28th, 9:30pm to show some love to all the January Hapa babies, including:

3. Road Trip to Stanford's Mixed Race Conference

As you may rememeber, Stanford's multiracial club MICS is holding a West Coast Mixed Race conference the weekend of February 4-5 and all the Hapa orgs of SoCal are getting together one big carpooling caravan to road trip it up to the Bay Area to attend! Schools involved include UCI, USC and UCSD not to mention the other schools from up North and other states....

Basically a weekend of meeting cool mixed ppl, learning about some mixed race issues you may not have been aware of before, and just one big party at night!

Sounds pretty cool huh.....attendence is free too! (awesome since normally these conferences charge a registration fee) A sign up sheet will be available at this week's meeting or you can just shoot me an email with your name and number indicating your interest in going.

1. First General Meeting

The first Hapa Club general meeting is going to be THIS WEDNESDAY
(Oct. 6) at 7pm in Hedrick Fireside Lounge (easy access for all you

2. Detention III Party at Larchmont this Friday with Sasha Singleton!

UCLA Hapa Club is throwing a party at Larchmont this Friday, Oct. 8 in
conjunction with UCLA Tau Theta Pi and USC CASA.....FYI for you guys,
Sasha Singleton will be there!

The event is 18+ and we WILL be offering limited rides to those of you
without wheels.

Hi! I was wondering if anyone has interesting holiday or celebrational rituals that draw from their mixed ethnicity they wouldn't mind sharing with me. For example, I have a friend who is Chinese and so instead of turkey on Thanksgiving her family makes duck the main entree. I think giving traditional holiday customs a spin by incorporating different cultures is really cool and reflective of globalism (something I care very much about). So I would love to hear all your ideas!

WHAT: Bring pictures of your family (parents, grandparents, siblings, pets, everyone!) We'll be sharing pictures, stories and experiences about our multifaceted and unique families (don't worry even if you don't have photographs its ok! you could always draw stick figure representations hahaha)

Join us at Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica for our 2nd Annual Scavenger Hunt!

We'll be splitting in to teams and the winners will get Diddy Reese on us!

Carpools will be leaving James West Alumni Center Friday May 14th at 6PM. (if u can't make it by 6pm, 3rd St is close enough you can take the Big Blue Bus for $0.25 and hitch a ride back with us!) Evites were sent out last night, so RSVP there letting us know if u can drive or if you need a ride and if you plan to bring any friends! (Let me know if you didn't receive the evite!!!)

Hey Hapas!

We all know that Mother's Day is coming up this weekend....SO if you're looking for something a bit more creative to give your Mama besides the standard Hallmark and flowers or candy come to the Hapa Club meeting this week! We've stocked up on lots of artsy craftsy stuff perfect for reliving those childhood days of home-made greeting cards with drawings of lopsided hearts and smiley faces!

1. Welcome Back Dinner

Come hang out with the Hapa crew this Thursday night (04/08/04) for FOOD at the Olive Garden in Westwood. Evites for this were sent out last night (ok, more like really early this morning) so PLEASE let me know if you didn't receive it. Meet in front of the restaurant at 6:45pm and bring along a big appetite as well as any of your friends (just RSVP on the evite so I can make appropriate reservations)

2. KCN, Luau, TCN

A bunch of cultural events are happening this week (so exciting)!

FRIDAY: Korean Culture Night
SATURDAY: Hawaii Club Luau
SUNDAY: Taiwanese Culture Night

All these events are happening this week on campus and should all be a lot of fun. Anyone who's interested in going to any of these shows, shoot me an email at amberlina80@yahoo.com and we'll get a Hapa group together to go! Tickets for the two culture nights (KCN and TCN) are FREE and can be picked up at the CTO. The Hawaii Club Luau tickets cost $12 (totally worth it - you get a huge meal while you enjoy the hula/tahitian dance performances plus a concert afterwards) and can also be picked up at the CTO.

3. Hapa Party at Vertigo

UCLA Hapa (us of course) has teamed up with USC Hapa and UCI Hapa to throw a kick ass party at Club Vertigo in Downtown L.A. on Friday, April 16th. We'll be flyering beginning this Thursday, Friday and allllllll of next week...any volunteers to help with tabling, flyering and just spreading the word about this event are greatly needed and appreciated!! 1. 8th week meeting
Have you ever wondered what the point of having a Hapa Club is? Ever have doubts of the legitimacy of such a club when a lot of its activities are based more on social interaction than the discussion of important "hapa issues"? Join us at this week's meeting for the presentation of one of your hapa peers' research paper about the legitimacy and neccesity of a Hapa Club (link to first edition of this paper is under the "In the Mix" heading on the website)

There will be a discussion on this topic following the presentation and snacks will be provided!

This week's meeting will be on Thursday, March 4, at 6pm. The new meeting location is ACKERMAN 2412.

2. Bone Marrow Drive
Next Monday and Tuesday, March 8 & 9, Hapa Club is co-sponsoring a Bone Marrow drive to be held in Bruin Plaza and we need volunteers from 10am to 3pm both days. If you can sign up for an hour time slot either day to flier on bruinwalk and/or to be present to oversee the drive as we need to have someone from our club there at all times. If you can offer any hour of your time, come to the meeting this week to sign up on the volunteer sheet OR you can email Emily Burton at eburton@ucla.edu OR stop by the table on bruinwalk and you can sign up with us there.

ALSO!! Even if you can't stay for a full hour, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE register to be a bone marrow donor! It is EXTREMELY difficult for minorites, especially those who are multiracial, to find a donor who matches. Registering takes very little time at all and only a few drops of blood! YOU COULD SAVE A LIFE!!!

4. 2004 UCLA Hapa Club t-shirt designs
This is it! We are FINALLY going to vote on tshirt designs this week, so bring in any last minute designs you may dream up and we'll get those shirts into production. We're also thinking of additional items besides just tshirts, if you have any suggestions as to what else you would want let us know!

5. MORE (Multiracial Organization Redifining Ethnicity) Conference
We're lucky to be able to announce that this year's National Student Conference on the Mixed Race Experience will be conveniently held in Southern California at the Claremont Colleges on April 2-4, 2004 (the last weekend of spring break).
