Heart Space

Hello fellow UCF grad students!

Hello community that hasn't been updated in ages! Who is still active on here? Any new members? Introduce yourself!

I'm a doctoral student studying planetary science at UCF, been there for a year and a half now. I'm originally from Pennsylvania, and I love living in beautiful central Florida. Nice to meet you all!

Housemate wanted - your rent would be cheap

I need a roommate to share a house with me.  I haven't actually rented the house, yet, though.  I have extra money this semester, and so I was hoping to rent a 3 bedroom/2 bathroom house and pay two thirds of the rent, and have a roommate pay one third.  Communal spaces would be shared equally, but I'd hope to have two of the rooms (one of them wouldn't necessarily be the master bedroom).  If you were my roommate, I'd want you to pay have the utilities and half of the deposit, however.

I've been looking at and prefer the area surrounding Dean Rd. between Colonial and University in a four or five mile radius.  I'm open to other ideas, though.  The houses have been priced between $800 and $1,100, which means that rent would be rather cheap for you if you chose to take me up on my offer.

I don't smoke, drink or do drugs, but I'm not incredibly uptight about those things.  Except drugs, I guess.  Some recreational pot smoking's fine, though, but it's better if it's done on the porch or outside.  And I wouldn't want to share a place with an alcoholic.

I'm clean, but not OCD.  As long as you're not a slob, things would be fine.

I'm open to the idea of pets.  I don't like small, yappy dogs, though.

I collect records and books and I like to ride my bike.

No couples.  Guests and occasional parties are fine, but habitual overnight night guests, or daytime extended stay guests, would be too much for me, except for that rare occasion when your old best friend is visiting out of town for a week and then your other old best friend is doing the same the week after - something like that.

New grad student looking for living advice

Hello all!

I will be a new grad student at UCF starting in the spring semester. I did my undergrad in central Florida, then moved to Alabama for my master's degree, so I'm really happy to be returning to Florida once again! I'll be in the new planetary science group. I can't wait to start!

I'm looking for a female roommate or two but am having terrible luck finding someone. I guess not many people start at UCF in the middle of the school year like I am. I'm moving to Orlando in mid December and am looking for a place to live in a safe area in a medium price range. I'm also looking for a pet-friendly place that would welcome my cat. Does anyone know of anyone who is looking for a roommate? A fellow female grad student would be ideal, but I'll go with undergrads, recent graduates, or professionals. Any recommendations on good, safe apartment complexes or areas, or what neighborhoods I should avoid?

Also, has anyone gone through the process of becoming a Florida resident? How easy/difficult is it? (I'm currently a Pennsylvania resident.)

Thanks so much!

Environmental Event

Hi all! I just wanted to give people in the central Florida area a heads up about a cool event that's going to be happening at the University of Central Florida. If this violates any of this community's guidelines, please feel free to let me know. Thanks!

Here's the info:

In February, Power Shift 09 brought 12,000 young people to Washington to hold our elected officials accountable for rebuilding our economy and reclaiming our future through bold climate and clean energy policy.

As an attendee, I can say it was an amazing experience to see so many young people come together for climate change.

This week, Power Shift '09 is coming to Florida and 5 other regions across the country.

Hundreds of activists from all backgrounds working to bring about a better future will come together to discuss the global environmental challenges we face and the actions we can take to solve these issues.

The conference will engage attendees in two days of workshops, panel discussions, trainings and lobbying activities. The Energy Action Coalition includes 50 leading climate, energy and social justice organizations.

The cost is only 20 bucks.

Here are the details for Florida Power Shift:

Power Shift Florida
Friday October 23 - Sunday October 25

UCF Arena
University of Central Florida
50 North Gemini Blvd
Orlando, FL 32816

grad school

I am a student at USF and I am graduating with a Bachelors in Psychology but I really want to go to UCF for a masters in Liberal Ars. How hard was it to get in? What kind of qualifications did you have?

CRW MFA

Hello. :) I'm not a graduate student yet, but UCF is my desired grad school for a Creative Writing MFA. I have a pretty specific question to ask about the Statement of Intent, if anyone here who is (or is attempting to be) in the MFA program.

Does it have to be in a particular format? I'm on a creative non-fiction track, and wanted to know if the SOI could be tailored to that -- a non-fiction essay of sorts. Or does it have to be more professional, less focused on the "essay" aspect and more on the "I'm so great because..." aspect?

I'm just curious because I would personally find the first way to be more feasible, but I also don't want to screw up my chances of getting in. :) If you have a SOI that you don't mind me reading, I could definitely use some supplemental material! I won't use anything from yours, no worries. If you can offer one, my e-mail is stephanie.kolcz (at) gmail.com.

Also... how many students are admitted into this program? Are the professors nifty? What kind of stuff do you study?

Thanks for all the help!
