Time-Jinx is a My Bride is a Mermaid webcomic created by LockAndKey989 on DeviantArt. The comics take place after the manga.
Nagasumi gets his learner's permit, which gives Gozaburo and Shark an idea on how to finally kill him. They planted a bomb in his car so they could wait until Nagasumi was alone before detonating it. But before they could, a mysterious Hooded Figure removed the bomb and placed it in Nagasumi's school. So when Gozaburo detonated the bomb, it instead killed all the students and all the teachers (including his wife and the Seto Clan). While Sun and Gozaburo are depressed, that same Hooded Figure is killing what remains of the Seto Clan and the Endomae Clan. However, the Hooded Figure turns out to be someone they know, someone who wants revenge for a lifetime of agony.
Time-Jinx provides examples of:
- Abhorrent Admirer: Masa rejected Nagasumi's mother after she tried coming onto him during the funeral for her family in the original timeline.
- Abusive Parents: Nagasumi’s parents, as usual. As soon as he gets a learner’s permit, they make him do all the driving for them, including making him drive his dad to work. When they hear that a serial killer is running loose, they tie him to a pole as a sacrifice to save themselves.
- All There in the Manual: Most of the information regarding this series, specifically what happened before the first page, after the last page, and the background of Future-sumi is provided in the descriptions for the comic pages.
- Apocalypse How : Class 3a. Decades in the future of the original timeline, the Hooded Figure/ Future-sumi exterminates humans and mermaids alike out of sheer anger.
- Bad Future: The one where Gozaburo and Shark successfully detonated the bomb inside Nagasumi’s car. It becomes increasingly depressing until it reaches an Apocalypse How disaster.
- Be Careful What You Wish For: Gozaburo, Kai, among many others, wanted Nagasumi dead, thinking that it would make Sun come “back” to them. However, in the timeline where she thought Nagasumi was dead, Sun became so tired of them not caring about her feelings that she cut ties with them all.
- Calling the Old Man Out: Sun gives a massive one to her father, but Gozaburo refuses to believe he is at fault, which causes Sun to lose her patience and disown him.
- Connected All Along: The end of the story reveals that it is actually a prequel to another comic series by the author
. - Cosmic Retcon: The story ends with Future-sumi willingly touching Nagasumi, causing the paradox to manifest and reset the timeline back to the day after Nagasumi got his learner’s permit. Nagasumi and Sun still remember everything from both timelines, while everyone else has forgotten. So, Sun and Nagasumi decide to avert the Bad Future together.
- Death by Despair: In the original timeline, Sun ended up becoming depressed over Nagasumi’s “death” and neglected her health to the point that she ended up dying on Nagasumi’s grave.
- Death by Irony:
- Nagasumi’s parents never did much to help their son no matter how many life-threatening challenges he faced, simply assuming he would survive or not caring. However, in the original timeline, Nagasumi’s Father ended up becoming collateral damage in an assassination attempt on Nagasumi.
- Shark (who is always willing to eat another person) gets his teeth pulled out, his fins cut off and made into soup, and he is finally eaten alive by piranha’s.
- Gozaburo ends up being beaten and killed by the Hooded Figure, who is actually Nagasumi’s future self.
- Everyone who ever hurt Nagasumi in the past was brutally murdered by the Hooded Figure/ Future-sumi.
- Deliberate Values Dissonance: Sun always thought that Nagasumi’s parents were “strict” before but never thought badly of them for beating their son since she assumed this was normal human parenting. Gozaburo informs her that, no, they are just awful parents.
- Dirty Coward: Nagasumi’s parents left him tied to a pole outside their house when they heard there was a murderer on the loose, hoping that they would kill him and leave them alone as they hide in the closet.
- Driven to Suicide: In the original timeline, Gozaburo killed himself out of guilt. Also, Ren decided to die in place of Mawari after losing her husband and daughter.
- Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Despite being spitefully angry at her as well, Future-sumi still cares about Sun. His plan was to kill Gozaburo in the past AFTER she was already born, and then he only planned to destroy the human world so that she would be spared.
- Even Evil Has Standards: Gozaburo admits to Sun that he doesn’t like Nagasumi’s parents and that if he didn’t hate Nagsumi then he would have killed them a long time ago as a favor to him.
- Expy: The Hooded Figure/ Future-sumi is one for the Time-Trapper from DC comics, whose image is borrowed from to portray him. They have many of the same powers and abilities.
- Faking the Dead: In the original timeline, Gozaburo and Sharks bomb put Nagasumi in a coma, but they let everyone else believe that he was dead.
- Insane Troll Logic: Maki points out to Gozaburo that Sun has been growing more distant from him since he attacked Nagasumi at the beach following the incident with Lord Youshio. She suggests that he stop trying to kill Nagasumi, otherwise Sun might reject him. But Gozaburo rationalizes that because Sun is giving him the cold shoulder because of how he treats Nagasumi, he is right that Nagasumi is making her love him more than her father, so he HAS to keep trying to kill him.
- I Reject Your Reality: Gozaburo refuses to believe that he is at fault. In his mind, Nagasumi is the bad guy who is stealing his daughter away from him and everything he does is justifiable and will bring Sun back to him. When Gin, Maki, the Hooded Figure, and Sun tell him otherwise, he denies it.
- It's All About Me: After Nagasumi "died" in the original timeline, Gozaburo celebrated while Kai, Saturn, and various others tried to start a relationship with Sun, who was still mourning.
- My God, What Have I Done?:
- Gozaburo has a breakdown twice. The first time is after realizing that Ren and the rest of the Seto Clan (bar Maki and Shark) died in a fire that he accidentally set off when he tried to detonate a bomb that Shark put in Nagasumi’s car. The second time is when the Hooded Figure/ Future-sumi tells him that his actions led to Sun dying in the original timeline where his original plan was successful.
- Future-sumi has this after he accidentally shoots Sun with an energy blast he meant for his younger self. He wanted to hurt Sun emotionally, but not kill her.
- Not Helping Your Case: After Gozaburo accidentally admits that he and Shark made the bomb. He justifies himself that the bomb was meant to kill Nagasumi, in his car, but someone removed it and placed it in the school instead. But Sun counters that he shouldn’t have been trying to kill Nagasumi in the first place.
- Not Quite the Right Thing: At the end of the series, Sun reveals to Nagasumi that the only reason she “thanked” the Seto Clan after they spent all day trying to kill Nagasumi on their first day of school was because she figured that calling them out would just make them hurt Nagasumi more (like how Gozaburo and Maki have done before). She thought that by making them think she was grateful they would go easier on him but, as Future-sumi pointed out, it only enabled them.
- Self-Made Orphan: The Hooded Figure kills Nagasumi's parents while they are hiding in the closet by beating them to death. The Hooded Figure is actually a twisted evil future version of their son.
- The Power of Hate: The Hooded Figure/ Future-sumi gained his power from a sheer amount of anger he felt while on his deathbed and the universe “responding”.
- Tragic Villain: The Hooded Figure, aka Future-sumi (Future Nagasumi). He has his counterpart’s unlucky past of being raised by abusive parents and having to deal with Sun’s crazy friends and Knight Templar Parent Father who have constantly tried to kill him. But on one attempt, they managed to put Nagasumi in a coma for decades. While he was asleep, everyone he knew died and the girl he loved had a tragic end. When Nagasumi finally woke up, he was an old man and told that he only had a week to live. His rage and desire for revenge transformed him into something monstrous.
- Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: The Hooded Figure/ Future-sumi. He initially only wanted to destroy the facility he was in because they spent decades stealing his genetic material to create a serum to help others, which diminished his health. But after he did so, he was confronted by the local authorities and he killed them all after they tried to hurt him. Then the rest of the Japanese military got involved too, so he razed Japan. Then the rest of the world tried to nuke Japan, so he created an army of Seto Dragon clones to help him destroy the world in less than a month.
- World's Strongest Man: The Hooded Figure/ Future-sumi has a variety of powers, including the ability to increase his size, phase through objects, create energy blasts, manifest objects, age a person into dust, de-age them into an embryo, and time travel. Even without his powers, he is fast and strong enough to give Gozaburo a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown without breaking a sweat.
