Ever wonder what goes on the minds of the Heroic Mime? Ever wonder what would happen if the Heroic Mime could actually talk? Well, look no further than watching the "What if _ Talked?" series.
The series is produced by Press Start to Laugh
. As its name implies, it's a web series where Press Start to Laugh plays as characters who have limited dialogue or only speak in grunts, in turn giving their stories a comical spin. When appropriate, he'll bring in his wife or kids to voice women and children.

The series contains the following tropes:
- Abusive Parents: Choo Choo Charles only sees his Monster Eggs as ingredients to make himself an omelet. An omelet that transforms him into an even more vicious and powerful monstrosity. That said, it's implied he's not a total jackass as one of his kids mentions Charles will come back for them once he has the omelet.
- Adaptational Dumbass: Chell in the original game is fiercely intelligent and determined. Chell in this series is an impulsive, short-sighted moron, though most of that admittedly comes as the result of brain damage. Her split personality Becky got the majority of her smarts.
- Adaptational Heroism:
- In Poppy Playtime, the protagonist is strongly implied to have taken part in the atrocities of the Poppy Playtime Corporation. This version of him seems entirely unaware of the horrors committed in his place of work, and thought it was just a regular (if somewhat eccentric) toy factory.
- Played with regarding Subject Delta in BioShock 2, since his motivation for helping Eleanor in the original game is left up to player interpretation (for example, he could doing so purely for his own survival, since his life is directly tied to hers). This version unambiguously cares for Eleanor as his daughter, and for the other Little Sisters as well, curing them every time. He even achieves the Golden Ending by sparing all three of Lamb's lieutenants (though in the cases of Stanley and Alex the Great, it's framed more as a Cruel Mercy, the former perpetually terrified of what Lamb will do to him for his betrayal and the latter mutating into such an awful state from the Adam experiments that Delta thinks leaving him like that is punishment enough).
- The Lucky Contestant, named Baz Kit Case in What if You (and Frankie) Talked in Finding Frankie, starts off the game as some poor shmuck who participates in a Blood Sport involving monstrous versions of cartoonish cereal mascots in the hopes of winning five million dollars, though he joins the "real" Frankie for another season to live a life of fame and fortune despite knowing the horrific game show will continue and more people will die. As with some of Press Start's other series, Kit Case is part of a Shared Universe and is a Composite Character, specifically with the protagonists of Garten of Banban and Poppy Playtime. So while Kit is a Glory Hound who's in it for the money, he loves his kid enough that he's willing to brave a kindergarten full of monsters to save them. It's also implied the reason he joined the deadly game show in the first place was to get enough money to send his kid to school.note
- Adaptational Jerkass: Most of these 'What ifs' portray the main characters as jerkish or a lot more so than they usually are.
- Downplayed. In their respective games, Wander and Isaac are men that are absolutely loyal to their love interest/spouse. In the "What if" version, while they are still loyal, they are willing to cut and run when things get TOO out of hand.
- Adaptation Name Change: In What if Chell Talked in Portal, the titular character decides to change her name to Trillian, or "Trill" for short.
- Almighty Janitor: Isaac comments on how he's doing better against the zombie aliens than all the army of now dead soldiers around him in Dead Space despite just being an engineer.
- And There Was Much Rejoicing: Kit's rather blunt response to the Warden giving Dr. Sawyer his Omni-Hand, the latter unsubtly planning to betray the former.Kit: The Warden was found dead thirty seconds later. Not that I'm sad about it.
- Angry Animalistic Growl: Kit lets out a downright chilling one when he watches a VHS tape showcasing the prison guards' Lack of Empathy towards the children-turned-toys.
- Are You Pondering What I'm Pondering?: Becky deduces immediately that GlaDOS is Carolyn. Chell on the other hand assumes that she's actually Cave Johnson.
- Avengers Assemble: Doom Guy Played With this in his Pre-Asskicking One-Liner.Doom Guy: TEAM DOOM GOD! Disassemble...Them!
- Badass Boast: To the Icon of Sin at the end of the original Doom Eternal campaign:
- Bad Boss: The Captain from the What if the Crew Talked series. He's a Glory Hound who's only interested in advancing his career, and his first interaction with the crew is him bluntly telling them he will happily throw them at the enemy and they will most likely die. That's not even going into the fact he killed the previous captain and then threw First Mate Philips overboard to assume command. Oh, and he never gets Johnson's name right.
- Be Careful What You Wish For: In Choo Choo Charles, Justin initially doesn't like his nickname "Monster Hunter" as he thought that sounded too cool for someone like him. When his in-game title "The Archivist" is revealed to him, he's unimpressed and wishes to be called the Monster Hunter again.
- Berserk Button: Do not deprive Doom Guy (sorry, Doom God) of his Super Shotgun.
- Big "WHAT?!": This reaction crops up every now and again whenever the character Press Start is voicing either learns he has to do something very, very stupid, someone has done something stupid, or he's just learned some mind-boggling revelation. For instance, Arthur's brother learns that Kindred Aerospace has created clones of him to help explore the unknown planet he's on, which also prompts him to have a mental breakdown.
- Blackmail: How did the Captain of Species: Unknown manage to get to that position: By blackmailing his superiors and whatnot to get his promotions. He's also so open about how despised he is that he can't be blackmailed.
- Black Sheep: Downplayed. Kit Case continues the family tradition of getting involved in some weird and crazy crap; in his case, he signs on to participate in a Deadly Game Blood Sport show involving horrific versions of cereal mascots. Unlike the other members of his family, who at least survive and/or go on to try and stop the horror from continuing, Kit decides to sign on for yet another season and keep the gameshow going. That said, he is the protagonist of What if You Talked in Garten of Banban where he's risking life and limb to save his kid, so he's not totally evil. He also seems to be completely against the horrific experiments performed by his former workplace of Playtime Co, enough to join Poppy in killing the Prototype.
- Brain Bleach: Arthur's brother loses his lunch whenever he watches commercials promoting products that are obviously disgusting.
- But for Me, It Was Tuesday: When Justin calls out Charles for killing his friend (Eugene), Charles tells him to be more specific as he has killed A LOT of people's friends.
- Butt-Monkey: Anyone that isn't DoomGuy is this (although even he has his unlucky moments), especially Phillips. Poor Phillips. And poor Danny, the Noodle Incident king of Playtime Co.
- Call-Back:
- In the What if Steve Talked in Minecraft series, a frequent running gag is that whenever people diss Steve's building skills, especially the Cube (which gets a lot of flak for how unflattering it looks), Steve will always bite out, "NOT an architect!" In What if Isaac Talked in Dead Space, a frequent gag in that series was that whenever characters tasked Isaac with doing something that was definitely not part of his job description, he could only shout "ENGINEER!" in annoyance and dismay.
- In What if Steve Talked in Minecraft, the titular character questions what possible advantage comes from self-destruction when a Creeper blows up in front of his temporary home. In What if You Talked in Subnautica, Arthur Dent made a similar remark toward the Crashfish while exploring the ocean."What evolutionary advantage does exploding solve?!"
- In both the first and third time Huggy Wuggy comes after Kit, he calls out “Marko!” while the Kit is trying to evade him. And Kit calls back “Polo!” without thinking.“Oh, come on! How'd I fall for that twice!”
- Catchphrase: After hearing a doctor say "God's work" in a recording, Isaac starts sarcastically referring to every horrible things he sees as God's work.
- Catharsis Factor:
- An In-Universe example with Poppy Playtime; Kit takes great pleasure in hitting all the mini-Wuggys in the face during Whack-a-Wuggy. He's actually disappointed when it comes to an end.
- Carter, Connor, and Johnson are given several opportunities to kill the Captain for all the messes he dragged them into.
- Cerebus Syndrome: Much like in Poppy Playtime proper where Chapter 3 was considered a turning point for the series (and expanding on the horrific tragedy that took place in Playtime Co.), the Hour of Joy is the moment Kit takes the situation deadly seriously. Following this, the humor takes a backseat, and anytime he does start cracking jokes, they tend to be bitter and full of anger.
- Character Development: Sebastian "Baz" Kit Case in Poppy Playtime. The only reason he's at Playtime Co. at first is because he wants that $50 paycheck, and he's willing to brave monstrous toys to get it. That changes in Chapter 3, where learning about the Hour of Joy and the full extent of the company's horrid experiments makes him determined to end the Prototype once and for all. Tellingly, Chapter 4 has Kit make fewer jokes and express increasing anger at the higher-ups, especially the Doctor, while it and Chapter 5 have him show increasing sympathy and kindness to the toys who've been through hell at the hands of both the company and the Prototype.
- Chekhov's Gun: In Bigfoot, Carter repeatedly complains about only having a flare gun. It helps put Bigfoot down for good.
- Comically Small Bribe: Kit in Poppy Playtime is mostly concerned with getting his final paycheck of $50 that he admits will likely just pay for a few months of Netflix he'll never watch (though he also decides to tack on an extra couple thousand for all the handiwork he has to do to progress). It isn't until the serious and dramatic revelations at the end of Chapter 3 that it stops being his primary motivator.
- This retroactively became even more comically small after Kit was made the protagonist of Finding Frankie. He should be a multimillionaire from his two seasons' worth of prize money, but is still determined to get that $50.
- Composite Character: Not so much the character's traits as the character's roles. Several of Press Start's videos are shared universes and often have continuing stories. For example, Arthur is the main character of The Stanley Parable, Subnautica, Raft, and No Man's Sky.
- Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Subject Delta to Jack. While Jack is (seemingly) The Everyman who was dropped into the madness of Rapture, who wants nothing more than to leave (thwarting the villain more out of necessity and spite than anything else), Delta is a Big Daddy who is a product of the madness, but his entire motivation is to save Eleanor, regardless of the cost to himself. Even their treatment of the Little Sisters contrast each other; while both choose to cure them instead of harvesting them, Jack is a bit more grossed out by the Sisters and isn't shy about saying so, while Delta treats them much more kindly. This actually stands out a bit in Delta's case, since Alpha series Big Daddies like Delta normally only care about one specific Little Sister (for Delta, this would be Eleanor), but while Eleanor is clearly Delta's main priority, he takes the time to make sure the Little Sisters are safe and cured.
- Creepy High-Pitched Voice: Huggy Wuggy has this in contrast to his monstrous, hulking form. However, during the Nightmare Sequence in Chapter 3, it shifts to a lower, harsher tone closer to his canon voice. When Huggy returns for real in Chapter 5, it's revealed that he actually does have the deep, mellow, Goofy-esque voice, but it shifts to the higher pitch whenever he's in a frenzied state.
- Department of Redundancy Department: In the climax of Chapter 2 in Poppy Playtime, Poppy reveals on the train that she doesn't intend on keeping her word on letting Baz leave the toy factory just yet. He naturally isn't happy at all, and angrily calls her a "betraying betrayer of betrayal!"
- Didn't Think This Through:
- The protagonist of Poppy Playtime hides from Mommy Long Legs in a deactivated incinerator... and then realizes that he'll be screwed if she decides to turn it on. Luckily, she doesn't.
- When the crew of Species: Unknown manage to get out of the blast radius of the USS Hawking, Carter asks them if they're out of the shockwave radius after they escaped the blast radius. They quickly find out they're not and their forcefield was the main reason their ship wasn't obliterated alongside the Hawking.
- Dumb Muscle: Mr. X is portrayed as a friendly jock, thinking that Leon shooting at him is a form of boxing. His reactions to being shot range from amusement to, "Nice hit, gonna need a breather after that." When meeting Claire, he expresses interest in boxing her brother, Chris.
- Everyone Has Standards:
- In Poppy Playtime, Kit keeps his snarky and mostly calm attitude throughout the nightmare toy factory until the end of Chapter 3, when he watches the "Hour of Joy" event on video tape, treating it as the horrifying tragedy it is. He stops making jokes and promises Poppy and Kissy that he'll help them stop the Prototype and avenge the victims. This continues for the entirety of Chapters 4 and 5, where the few sarcastic remarks he does make are far more bitter and pointed than before, showing the sheer disgust he has toward Playtime and the employees who knew what was happening but made no effort to stop them.
- Earlier when Kit hears from a VHS tape that Dr. Sawyer not only feels no remorse for the torturous experiments he put the Prototype through but got excited while doing it, he straight up calls the Mad Scientist pure evil.
- Kit mocks CatNap as he flails around on fire, but the second the Prototype shows up, he begs CatNap not to trust his master and offers to help him. His pleas are all for nought, but he then vows to come after the Prototype for what he did.
- Downplayed when Kit finds the second tape revealing Ms. Gracie's fate:“Oh, it was the Critters that made her this way. Yikes. Deserved, but yikes.”
- Fluffy the Terrible:
- Arthur names a Leviathan near the Abandon Ship, Benjamin or Benny for short.
- He then calls a Threatening Shark the same name and then later for the other ones, Benjamin Jr/ Benny Jr. Although Trillian calls them Bruce, which turns out to be his actual name.
- Foreshadowing:
- An early notice to Arthur's insanity is when he changes pronouns from "I" to "we".
- Poppy Playtime:
- In Chapter Four, when Doey slips through a crack in the wall, only to realize he has to figure out a way for the protagonist to actually follow him. The protagonist sarcastically asks him if he has a bomb.
- Huggy mentions not wanting to put the protagonist “in the box” and name drops Ms. Gracie during his first chase sequence in Chapter 5, before the protagonist has heard of either of them.
- Later, the protagonist wonders what would happen if Huggy and Kissy ever met.
“Either something really good or… terrible. There's really no in-between.”
- Formula-Breaking Episode:
- What if Mike (and Bonnie, Chica, Foxy, and Freddy) Talked in Fight Nights at FNAF is one of the rare videos where Press Start doesn't put a unique spin. This largely has to do with the fact that the FNAF series has a tight and established lore that makes inserting characters like, say, Arthur Dent or Justin Case, impossible, though he does manage to weave his signature humor into the game's story.
- What if You Talked in Helldivers 2. At the start of the video, Press Start acknowledges that the Helldivers talk, but since their voice lines are recycled, he decided to do it anyway.
- Most of Press Start's works are comical to the point of self-awareness shenanigans or typically making the most out of a terrible situation. What if Corvo Talked in Dishonored and What if Delta Talked in Bioshock 2 are outliers where Press Start makes the MCs of their respective series much more serious, albeit engaging in some dark humor every now and again.
- What if You Talked in Poppy Playtime Chapter 4 also falls under this, compared to Press Start's other works as well as the rest of the Poppy Playtime videos themselves, with Kit only cracking a few jokes throughout the video as opposed to the fairly frequent jokes in Chapters 1 to 3.
- Friend to All Children: The protagonist of Poppy Playtime immediately develops more sympathy for the monsters once he learns that they're made from children. Even CatNap, who has been tormenting him for much of Chapter 3, he implores to not trust the Prototype and offers to help him.
- General Failure: The Captain/Commander is a complete and utter buffoon whose poor leadership manages to get his ships/tanks destroyed and nearly have his crew killed, at least the speaking ones. The only reason he isn't kicked out or fired is due to the massive blackmail he has on the higher-ups.
- Glory Hound: The Captain from the What if the Crew Talked series. His goal first and foremost is to earn medals, and is willing to do whatever it takes to win them, to the chagrin of the soldiers under his command.
- A God Am I: Once people start worshiping Doom Guy, it doesn't take long for him to let his new position of "Doom God" go to his head.
- Go Mad from the Isolation: In the Subnautica duology, Arthur starts to go insane over time due to his isolation, culminating in him having multiple personality disorder.
- Hand Wave: Since the series is heavily comedic, Press Start will use these to shrug off any inconsistencies that might arise between himself and any revelations about the protagonists he voices.
- In Garten of Banban, the multiple notes you find that start with "Dear Mommy" imply the protagonist is a female, but Baz simply remarks that the kid will be disappointed when a dad shows up instead.
- Another Banban character remarks on them being a Heroic Mime, and Kit says "No, you're just deaf."
- The voice used for Huggy Wuggy is drastically different from his canon voice. A pinned comment from PS states that he missed the button where you can hear a snippet of his voice. But even without that explanation, the fact that almost every character from Poppy Playtime has canonically undergone serious Sanity Slippage could very easily explain the voice change.
- How We Got Here: What if Chell Talked in Portal is essentially a prequel What if You Talked in Raft series, focusing on Trillion and her life prior to the world flooding.
- I Resemble That Remark!: When Daryl calls Justin "a fancy pants" monster hunter that got the chest open with his "fancy fingers", he takes offense that, claiming he got his pants/gloves for a 50% discount... then admits he got them embroidered.
- I'm a Doctor, Not a Placeholder: Isaac is exasperated that the other characters think he can make it through the Necromorph-infested ship like he's some undead alien exterminator when his actual job is being an ENGINEER.
- Irony:
- Arthur really, REALLY hates fish AND water. Guess which planets he crash lands into have an abundance of?
- Both Arthur and his brother think that the other is doing well in their respective jobs, not knowing that they are suffering too.
- The Load: The Hunter sees the Handler as this for her knack in getting into trouble.Hunter: You know I'm seriously considering letting it (monster) eat you.
- Loophole Abuse: A gameplay variant. Press Start to Laugh typically voices characters who don't talk, and if they do, they usually only speak in grunts or cries of pain (such as Elden Ring, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Skyrim). What if DOOM Guy talked is a notable exception in that the Doom Slayer in Eternal speaks on occasion, though since the moments where he speaks can be counted on one hand, Press Start's able to get away with it. The same is true with the Prototype in Poppy Playtime. The Prototype does speak in the game, but since his voice is usually compiled from other characters voices, Press Start can put his own voice through a filter and distort it a bit, and the Prototype is just using the protagonist's voice.
- Meaningful Name:
- Crewman Arthur Dent's name is taken directly from the character of the same name from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Tellingly, he also goes through some pretty batshit crazy adventures.
- Some of the previously nameless protagonists go by the name Justin Case and no matter the situation he always seems prepared for what's in store for himnote . Sadly not the case for Baz Kit Case (whose first and middle name, combined with his surname, sound very close to "basket case", a deragetory term used to describe less-than-sane individuals), Justin's brother who has to deal with some crazy shit when he wins a competition and gets involved in a Deadly Game involving murderous cereal mascots. He also has to pick up his kid from an expensive kindergarten and then has to pick up his last paycheck from the toy factory where he used to work.note
- Only Sane Man: In the What if Jack Talked in BioShock series, Jack plays with this role. He's one of the few sane people in Rapture and is utterly flabbergasted by Rapture's existence, even questioning where and when Ryan had the time to build the damn place and deal with hazards like whale collisions. He's interested in visiting the cocktail bar, though.
- OOC Is Serious Business: Kit Case was primarily motivated by getting his paycheck, even during the Nightmare Sequence featured near the end of the game, and remained talkative and energetic when dealing with the various Living Toys in the factory. However, when witnessing the horrific massacre of the employees in the Hour of Joy tape, he is much less talkative and more serious, even deciding he doesn't want the paycheck after all. This carries on into the next chapter where Kit is focused on stopping the monsters and has no patience for the Doctor's self-righteous speeches.
- Doom Slayer (Or, Doom God) tends to be fairly impulsive and tends to rarely take anything seriously. However, after Prince Ahzarak kills his beloved Dragon, Serrat, in Dark Ages he shows a much colder and more furious side to himself putting him more in line with the original version of the Slayer as he sets out to bring bloody vengeance upon the Prince.
- Parental Favoritism: That's what Arthur's brother believe to be the case.EKO: We're really proud of you. We don't have a favorite.
Arthur's Brother: Mom says the same thing. - Pet the Dog: While this version of Doom Guy is a narcissistic Blood Knight, he's at least appreciative towards the intern, even giving him the title "Intern Guy".
- Pungeon Master: Some of the characters, notably Doom Guy and Isaac Clarke does this.
- Punny Name: In the Ghostbuster's video game, the Rookie is named Justin Case, because the veteran Ghostbusters have him testing the new equipment just in case it malfunctions. He's related to the composite main character of Garten of Banban, Poppy Playtime, and Finding Frankie, Sebastian "Baz" Kit Case, or basket case. Baz's son Ed, the child he's rescuing in Garten of Banban and the main character of Indigo Park, seems to have averted this.
- Related in the Adaptation: Chell is strongly implied to be the daughter of Cave Johnson and Carolyn, based on Becky (Chell's more intelligent split personality) remark about them being familiar, and Chell musing that they'd make a good-looking baby.
- The whole Case family. Justin Case is the Rookie Ghostbuster and later on, the Archivist from Choo Choo Charles. His brother, Baz Kit Case, is the lucky competitor from Finding Frankie, the ex-Playtime Co employee from Poppy Playtime, and the parent looking for their child in Garten of Banban. And his child? That's Ed from Indigo Park. Honestly, the only reason they aren't related to the Afton family is the tight and unforgiving established lore of Five Nights at Freddy's.
- Running Gag:
- In "What if Doom Guy Talked?", Doom Slayer always makes a point to tell everyone about his love for Cheetos. He finally gets them at the end of the Ancients Gods portion after being sealed away.
- Teleporting hurts, as several protagonists complain.
- Responding to a "You!" Exclamation with a cheerful "Me!"
- Several of the characters would say "Consequences be damned" whenever they do something incredibly dangerous.
- Some characters start referencing Spider-Man whenever they use their grapples to swing and climb.
- The Captain from the What if The Crew Talked series cannot remember Johnson's name. Johnson uses this to his advantage when the latter wants to charge the Crew for mutiny.
- Kit Case recounts several Noodle Incidents where a fellow employee, Danny suffers gruesome fates at Playtime Co., with Danny being the employee shown in the VHS tutorials for the GrabPack and its hands. This includes getting decapitated, cut in half and impaled on spikes. He also managed to blow himself up with the GrabPack flare gun, with his toes ending up two states away.
- While not a frequent gag, whenever someone asks the character Press Start is voicing to do something (usually surrender and die painfully), the following banter ensues:"No."
"Come on."
"No!"
"Come ooon."
"No!"
"Awww..."
- Shared Universe: Several of the "What ifs" take place in a singular continuity.
- Creman Arthur Dent, the protagonist of Press Start's What if you Talked in Subnautica series, was originally an employee constantly referred to as "Stanley" by an unseen voice, and his return to Earth has him discover the world has been flooded by water and his new companion is a bonkers woman named Trill (also named Chell) who worked with crazy robots and had a box for a best friend. In his first outing, Arthur mentions having a brother who works at Kindred Aerospace. That same brother also worked for the FicSit corporation. Apparently the Dent brothers have bad luck when it comes to crash landing on planets with hostile forms of life.
- The Case family are the primary protagonists who deal with an assortment of supernatural creatures and phenomenon, including the ghosts and demons of Manhattan, a demonic spider-train, sentient killer toys, bizarre kindergarten mascots, and rogue theme park mascots. Then there's a group of military personnel having to go through wacky shenanigans thanks to their incompetent commanding officer.note
- Elden Ring and Sky Rim.
- Shout-Out:
- What if You Talked in Subnautica names the main character after the protagonist of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The end of the duology even has him leave behind a message saying, "So long, and thanks for all the fish," which is the title of the fourth entry in the series. The sequel series What if You Talked in Raft also introduces a new character named Trillian, another character from the book series.
- The voice given for Choo-Choo Charles is patterned after that of Krusty the Clown.
- Shut Up, Hannibal!: Kit likes shutting down Harley Sawyer's self-righteous rants in this manner, with perhaps the best example coming right before he puts the Mad Doctor down for good. The Doctor: It was going to be mine! It was all going to be mine! My discovery! My recognition! I was the one who paved the golden path!
Kit: Your golden path was laid over a trail of bodies and blood! You don't deserve a damn thing except an excruciating death! Luckily, I'm here to deliver. - Silicon Snarker: During the space station level, Samus's AI malfunctions and starts to talk back at her throughout the video.
- Simpleton Voice: Chapter 5 of "WIYT in Poppy Playtime?" reveals Huggy used to have a calm and pleasant one similar to the voice his cardboard cutout uses, when the protagonist relives his memories. But it shifts to his more manic, high pitched voice as he begins to lose his mind. It starts to shift back to normal when he's reunited with Kissy Missy and she starts to calm him down.
- Something We Forgot: At the end of, "What if You (And Huggy) Talked in Project: Playtime?" after Carter asks the Captain where Johnson is, the scene switches to Johnson, who is revealed to be still back at the factory and fighting for his life against the horde of mini-Huggy Wuggys.
- Spared by the Adaptation: Unlike in Poppy Playtime, Huggy survives his fall but can't get back up, making him a non-threat.note
- Split Personality:
- To cope with his isolation and hopelessness of his predicament, Arthur created multiple personalities. Art is hyper-aggressive Blood Knight, Arty is whiny and annoying Shrinking Violet and Arrr is a Pirate. Then comes a new personality who is a snob and thinks he's mayor. In "What if Stanley Talked in Stanley Parable?", it's implied Arthur (Stanley Parable) had been this way before joining Alterra.
- Trillian has another personality called Becky who unlike the Jerkass former is kinder and more rational, developed after a head injury during her time at Aperture.
- Stalker with a Crush: Nemesis. Yes, the massive, ugly zombie brute that chases Jill Valentine around, punches, incinerates, blasts and stabs her only wants to have a date her.
- They Just Don't Get It: Remember the king of the rejected toy "Sir Poops-a-lot" from Poppy Playtime? Turns out it was Kit Case's idea! He takes offense that wasn't approved and shamed by the board, standing firm that it was "a great idea, just not well executed".
- Throwing Down the Gauntlet: Doom Guy to the Dark Lord at the end of The Ancient Gods Part 2:Doom Guy: Hey! Dark Lord! I'M HERE! Get out here so I can finally administer that enema! Could you hurry this up? I got some Cheetos that need eatin'! [...] Oh there you are! Finally! Nice suit! Compensating much? That's okay, no one's gonna care how inadequate you are when you're missing a head!
- Unexplained Recovery: It's implied by Kit that it's the same Danny in VHS tutorials who suffered fatal injuries, including getting beheaded, and (somehow) survived them all.
- Vocal Dissonance: His take on Huggy Wuggy gives him a high-pitched shrill voice, in contrast to his canon voice. This is later justified in Chapter 5 as a gauge of Huggy's relative sanity; he speaks in the low, somewhat dopey voice when he's calm and in the high, deranged voice when he's in a murderous rage.
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Having a severe case of arachnophobia, Justin Case is not happy facing off the Spider Witch and Charles.
- Yank the Dog's Chain: At the end of What if Chell Talked in Portal, Trill is ecstatic to have Cuby with her and declares the two will have incredible adventures. Ten seconds later, Earth is suddenly flooded and Cuby is too heavy to float in water.
- You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!:
- In the What if the Crew Talked series, the titular characters are initially happy to be stationed at another ship in another country (and later a different branch in the military) and to get away from their nutty Captain. Not ten seconds later, they learn that same captain is in charge of their unit, prompting this response.
- At the end of Chapter 4 in Poppy Playtime, Kit has this reaction to finding out Huggy survived his fall in the first chapter and is now coming for him again.
- Youth Is Wasted on the Dumb: In "What if the Player talked in Poppy Playtime", Kit remarks in hindsight Playtime shouldn't have hired teenagers and give them access to heavy hydraulic machinery while seeing the first VHS tape on the Grabpack and one unfortunate employee lost his head. Literally.Kit: Oh, that's right! Poor Danny. Never saw that high-five coming. And this is why you don't hire teenagers and give them access to heavy hydraulic machinery.
