Guys Next Door is an animated comedy series created by Eric Kaplan (of Futurama, Krapopolis, and The Big Bang Theory fame) and starring Pamela Adlon, David Herman, Melissa Rauch, Simon Helberg, and Kevin Sussman.
Fed up with their freeloading "content creator" roommate Di, Jungian life coach Wooze and ambiguously-employed Les are on the verge of kicking her out when secret government assassin Richie shows up at their door, desperate for shelter. His associates Trent and Amanda Rio soon follow, and the roommates find themselves sucked into a conspiracy involving the Deep State, the Deeper State, and an egg.
The pilot
is available on YouTube.
- Chekhov's Gun: The pilot opens with Les and Di arguing about Di eating Les' sushi. In the climax, Di throws a piece of sushi into the goddess-womb, causing it to give birth to a divine shrimp.
- Clone Angst: Richie is actually a clone; the original Richie died during his and Trent's failed mission at Bio Zone. Learning the truth sends him into an existential crisis.
- Extreme Doormat: Wooze lets his roommates exploit or bully him and is too timid to ask for money from his few patients. When Ritchie, Trent, and Amber invade the apartment, he quickly allows himself to get tied up in their madness rather than even trying to tell them to go away.
- Hyper-Competent Sidekick: Parodied extensively. Amber Rio is technically only Trent and Richie's executive assistant, but she's clearly the smartest person on the team.
- Ms. Fanservice: Amber becomes this near the end of the pilot when she disrobes to enter the goddess-womb and remains nude for the rest of the episode.
- Only Sane Man: Les is the only person in the entire cast who understands how to function in the real world, whereas Wooze and Di have jobs that frankly only exist on the Internet and Richie, Trent, and Amber Rio are so deep in the Deep State that they've forgotten how normal people are supposed to behave.
- Pretty Freeloaders: The only reason Di has not been kicked out of the apartment is because she is attractive and Wooze believes that she might date him at some point.
- Serial Moocher: Di is a failing influencer and survives mainly by borrowing money and food from her housemates Les and Wooze. She also solicits money from her few online followers, although most of her actual revenue comes from people watching her videos just to insult her. When the series opens, Les is on the verge of kicking her out of the apartment for not contributing to the rent.
- Skewed Priorities: In the pilot, Di thinks that the fact that her most recent video got trashed on the Internet is a bigger crisis than her inability to pay her rent.
