Max-Level Bonus

Go To

Games with Point Build Systems for stat allocation may incentivize specialization in stats instead of being a Jack of All Trades by rewarding the player for raising something to the Cap, beyond the regular improvement of increasing the stat.

Another term for the reward is "Capstone Ability".

A downplayed version of this reward type might have the final reward be just because there's a reward for every even division, like every quarter of fullness, so being totally full gives a reward as well.

One way that this might manifest is the reveal of a totally new system, usually called "Ascension", upon hitting the max Character Level, and that gives new types of bonuses.

Hitting the max level may give an achievement in games that support that, and would overlap with this if such achievements have in-game effects. This is often a Bragging Rights Reward in games because the power level of max level might already be enough to make the game easy, no addition effects required.

Full Health Bonus is a different type of bonus that's usually easier to achieve, getting a reward for having more, or usually just at the full Hit Points mark, and lost when it goes down.

    Fan Works
  • Harry Potter and the GUI: Each stat is capped at 20 (after which it's greyed out), and gives a bonus for reaching it, mostly seen through Harry achieving them. For example:
    • The bonus for pushing Finesse to 20 is "Perfect Aim", allowing the user to never miss a stationary target, and be twice as accurate against moving targets.
    • At the duelling club, Harry relies heavily on his Agility 20 bonus, "Effortless Dodge", which allows him to dodge spells endlessly without becoming tired, winning most of his duels by wearing his opponents down.
    • Harry (and everyone else) gets "Mental Fortress", from Willpower 20, making them essentially immune to Mind Control — such as the influence of the Horcruxes.
    • Charisma 20 is seen in "Glitch", which grabs people's attention when speaking:
Lee had gone full Charisma, and the rest of the Marauders suspected that meant he'd maxed it out. In the last week, every time he'd wanted to say something, everyone in the room had shut up and looked toward him,
    • Intelligence 20, which Hermione gets:
      • First described in "Bug Report" as "gained the ability to seemingly recall basically anything she'd read".
      • Second description is in "Random Encounter" as "nearly-photographic memory".
  • KibblesTasty:
    • At 20th level, Psions become able to remain as an ethereal ghostlike entity when they would normally die, powered by their remaining psionic energy.
    • Occultists become able to cast any spell under 3rd level as a ritual, and the time needed for ritual spells to be cast is drastically shortened.
    • Warlords are able to use a d4 instead of expending their usual Leadership Dice for abilities that need them.
    • Inventors become able to create temporary upgrades, effectively giving them an extra Upgrade slot that can easily be changed.
    • Wardens become able use their connection to primal powers to create effects on the scale of natural disasters per long rest.
    • Spellblade capstones depend on the subclass. For example, Battlemages can enter a state of resonance where they have unlimited Arcane Surge uses, and Aether Blades can overcharge their magic weapon to be able to bypass armor and attack multiple creatures.
    • The Doggo sidekick class allows its recipient the ability to defy the "dog always dies" cliche by being able to mysteriously come back from mortal harm.
  • Laserllama:
    • At 20th level, Psions become resistant to the mundane damage types, and can restore all of their Psi Points from simply doing light activity for a while.
    • Savants have their Intelligence ability score increased by 4, and their Intellect Die rolls can be replaced with the character's Intelligence modifier if it rolls lower.
    • The capstone for Magi depends on the subclass, such as Arcanists learning spells of a higher level than the class usually gains, or Hexblades being able to make their weapon sentience ritual permanent.
    • Vessels are able to stay within their Archon form and use its benefits for an indefinite amount of time upon reaching level 20.
    • Shamans become immune to aging and disease, and can restore themselves from the brink of death by releasing their bound spirits.
  • somanyrobots:
    • The Troubadour's capstone depends on the subclass, such as Skalds gaining several damage resistances when performing a Mystic Song, and Stormcrows being able to temporarily become a being made of storms.
    • The Swashbuckler's capstone also depends on their Code, such as Duelists gaining extra durability against their marked foe, and Tricksters being able to cast phantasmal horror on a critical hit.
    • The Bloodrager's capstone depends on their Martial Discipline. For example, Reavers gain the ability to go into a wild rage to repeatedly attack a foe, and Ferals going into a Battle Frenzy that boosts their speed and the damage of their claws.

    Literature
  • A Dearth of Choice: As the Dungeon levels up, it inadvertently maxes out its ability that reduces the cost of unit upgrades. The RPG Mechanics 'Verse rewards it with a bonus perk "Best of the Best", granting all units one free starting upgrade and a subsequent 50% discount.
You have pursued not only the path of overwhelming numbers but indisputable quality. For reaching the upgrade cost reduction limit, it has been removed from the Experience selections and you've been granted this perk.
  • A Playthrough of a Certain Dude's VRMMO Life: In the In-Universe VRMMO "One More Free Life Online", the developers revealed post-release that there was a hidden system to their skills where players could learn more powerful abilities by specializing in one type of skills (combat, magic, crafting, etc.). Cap Raiser is also Inverted: Having skills in multiple types of skills actually lowers the cap for all of them, restricting players from learning the higher-ranked abilities. When the developers released the information, they gave the players the option to reassign their skills, resulting in a lot more specialization among the player base, though the protagonist, Earth, chose to keep his more generalized build because it suited his needs for solo-play.
  • Vainqueur the Dragon: The Fisherman class is a Magikarp Power. The first nineteen levels give nigh-useless Perks, and the System makes it exponentially harder to gain levels in any class as one's total level increases, making Fisherman levels a significant sacrifice for most, but anyone who maxes out its level (at 20) is considered The Dreaded while on or near the sea. That's because its capstone ability, Primeval Abyss, gives a Forced Transformation to all fish within a mile of the fisherman, into truck-sized sea serpents, demonstrated by Mag Mell.

    Tabletop Games
  • Dungeons & Dragons:
  • Munchkin: The reward for reaching level 10 is winning the game.
  • Pathfinder: 1st Edition gives almost every base class that isn't a pure spellcaster some capstone ability upon reaching the cap of 20th level, such as fighters automatically confirming critical hits with their weapon of choice, paladins gaining damage reduction and the ability to attempt to banish any evil outsider currently the target of smite evil, and rangers gaining the ability to attempt to One-Hit Kill a target who is one of their favored enemies. Some archetypes and the Chronicle of Legends supplement offer alternative capstone abilities.
  • The Witcher Old World: Maxing out your witcher's stats does not confer any immediate gameplay advantages over the respective penultimate stat level, but it has two indirect positive effects. First, it allows you to "meditate" on that stat to gain a Trophy (i.e. a victory point). Second, a maxed-out stat is locked in and can no longer be permanently lowered by Random Events and monster abilities.

    Video Games
  • Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura: Getting any stat up to 20 (the normal maximum unless you had a racial bonus to that stat) unlocked a special ability. For example, having a Strength of 20 meant that your melee attacks now deal double damage, while raising your Constitution to 20 gives immunity to poison.
  • Civilization V: Maxing out a Social Policy tree grants a "finisher" trait on top of the previously unlocked Social Policies. For instance completing the Tradition tree (which is focused on a "tall" style of a small, but well-developed group of cities) grants a free Aqueduct in your empire's first four cities, and grants the ability to purchase Great Engineers with Faith starting in the Industrial Era.
  • Danganronpa: Fully maxing out a bond level with any character during free time will unlock a new skill to be used during class trials. The player will also receive the underwear belonging to the person they bonded with.
  • Dawn of War II: Downplayed because the awarded perk for deep investment into a hero's attribute is often placed just before the maximum value rather than being at the maximum.
  • Diablo III: Once a character has reached max level (60 in the base game, 70 with the DLC) and mastered all the skills available to their character class, they gain access to the paragon system — any further experience they earn is converted into paragon points, which are shared between all characters on the same account, and can be spent on boost to their stats such as movement speed, attack speed, resource cost reduction and so on.
  • Dragon Age II: Maxing out either Friendship or Rivalry with companions has three positive effects. First, it unlocks a unique passive ability for the respective companion. Second, it locks in the relationship permanently, so that it is no longer affected by subsequent Friendship and Rivalry gains. Thirdly, it ensures that companion's loyalty to Hawke even if Hawke sides with the faction that the companion personally opposes in the endgame.
  • Dragon Sinker: Pushing a job all the way to level 10 will grant a passive ability that continues to apply even after switching jobs. For example:
    • "Dancer" causes a character to recover a small amount of health at the end of every turn.
    • "Undead" / "Revenant" grants a Last Chance Hit Point; unless a character is struck twice in the same round, they cannot be killed.
  • The Elder Scrolls: Starting from the fourth game, there's Master perks given for hitting 100 in a skill. To note:
  • Fallout:
    • Fallout 3 has a number of "capstone" perks that are only available at the max level, which is 20 in the base game and 30 with the "Broken Steel" DLC:
      • Level 20 perks are Solar Powered (gain boosted stats when outside and in daylight), Ninja (boosts the damage from sneak attacks, better Critical Hit rate with melee weapons), Grim Reaper's Sprint (killing an enemy with V.A.T.S. restores all expended AP), or Explorer (All undiscovered locations are added to the map).
      • Level 30 perks are Nuclear Anomaly (Trigger a nuclear explosion as a Desperation Attack if your hitpoints are reduced below 20), or Almost Perfect (All the player's S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats are boosted to 9).
    • Fallout: New Vegas: If the player reaches level 50 with all 4 DLC installed, they have the option of taking one of three capstone perks, based on their current position on the Karma Meter:
      • Evil Karma grants "Ain't Like That Now", giving a +25% bonus to AP regeneration and +20% to attack speed.
      • Neutral Karma grants "Just Lucky I'm Alive", giving a temporary +4 bonus to luck if the player has less than 25% of their health at the end of a fight, and a +50% damage boost to Critical Hits.
      • Good Karma grants "Thought You Died", giving a bonus to max hit points and +10% to all damage inflicted.
  • Final Fantasy:
    • Final Fantasy V: Mastering jobs pass on their highest stat bonuses as well as some passive abilities to the Freelancer and Mime classes. For instance, mastering Monk allows the Freelancer and Mime to gain its bonuses towards Strength and Stamina, boosting physical attack damage and max HP respectively. Mastering Ninja allows the aforementioned jobs to Dual Wield.
    • Final Fantasy VII: Maxing out the AP on Materia allows them to "give birth" to new copies of said Materia that start out at 0 AP.
  • Forget Me Not: My Organic Garden: The upgradable items all have quests to reward upgrading them, with a cash reward for achieving certain levels, with the final levels being one such threshold.
  • Hay Day: Getting all three mastery stars on a machine makes it produce items 15% faster and changes its color scheme to its fully upgraded version, with a gold star decoration.
  • Iji: Maxing out any stat grants a related Special Trait:
    • Health grants Suppression, reducing damage by 1 Health point from any attack that deals 2 or more.
    • Attack grants Improved Autoloading, reducing all reload times by 20%.
    • Assimilate grants Advanced Recover, causing red and green Nanofields to restore an additional Health point.
    • Strength grants Cybernetic Endurance, increasing Mercy Invincibility's duration by 50% and letting Iji fire the MPFB Devastator without being knocked down by the recoil.
    • Crack grants Electronic Mastery, increasing cracking time, stopping blue nodes from flickering, and preventing any backfire from failing to crack a target.
    • Tasen and Komato grant Vengeance and Glory respectively, each adding +1 to ammo pickups of the associated type.
  • La Tale: The Ascension system, unlocked after reaching level 235, is how you grow stronger even past the level cap, with passive bonuses that are applied account-wide.
  • I Was a Teenage Exocolonist: Up to 100 points can be built up for each skill and each skill gives a new perk at 33, 66 and 100 points respectively. Several of the 100 point perks are both unique to the skill and quite desirable: giving a gift to the same peer once a month rather than once a season (Creativity), avoiding roadblock events while exploring (Perception), being able to refuse acquiring Deckbuilding Game cards (Organizing), getting a second Bio-Augmentation on top of the one chosen during character creation (Biology) and inability to get injured (Toughness).
  • Legend of Grimrock: Training any skill to Level 50 unlocks a unique perk; for example, Level 50 Spellcraft halves the cost of all spells, and Level 50 Assassination means that enemies attacked from behind die in one hit.
  • Mega Man Battle Network: Upon reaching the max level for a Style Change, Mega Man will be rewarded with a unique battle chip or a special custom part that he can utilize in later battles when equipped.
  • Monster Sanctuary: Mons that hit the max level (42) continue to gain experience points, but instead of unlocking skill points when they hit the level-up threshold, they instead grant the keeper a minion badge — a Rare Candy item that instantly gives another monster a free level up when used.
  • Nuclear Throne: Once you reach Level Ultra (level 10), you can choose a character-exclusive Ultra Mutation. Also, if you're playing as Y.V. or Cuz, you get teleported to Y.V.'s Crib, which contains two giant weapon chests that contain loads of weapons.
  • Persona: Maxing out a Social Link will unlock the strongest persona of its Arcana, allowing it to be created in the Velvet Room.
    • Persona 4 introduces upgrading party member Personas to a second tier after maxing out their Social Link.
    • Persona 5 takes it one step further and unlocks a unique effect for each Confidant (the renamed Social Link), including the aforementioned Persona evolution, the Strength Arcana confidant letting you fuse Personas that are higher level than you, or the Tower Arcana letting Joker's Gun attacks ignore enemies' resistance to Gun damage.
  • Pokémon: Generation VII and onwards games have a mechanic called "Hyper-Training" which is only available to level 100 Pokemon — if they have any stats that are less than the maximum possible for their species, the player can trade bottle caps in exchange for a training session to boost those stats to maximum.
  • Psychonauts 2: When Raz reaches max rank in the Psychic Intern program, which can only happen in the postgame, his Clairvoyance power is upgraded so that he doesn't have cooldowns on his powers.
  • Rivals of Aether: Maxing out a character's level in Abyss Mode will unlock that character's abyss clone as a selectable alternate costume in all modes.
  • RuneScape: Reaching Level 99 in any skill allows you to unlock the Skillcape associated with it, which is a high-end piece of gear that buffs all combat styles. All of them have perks, albeit ones that vary depending on the version of the game you're playing; for instance, the Attack cape in Runescape 3 slows weapon degradation on high-level gear, while the same cape in Old School Runescape provides free entry to the Cyclops room in the Warrior's Guild. Obtaining Level 99 in all skills provides the Max Cape, which has better stats; in Old School, it inherits all of the Skillcape perks, but in RS3, it just provides three perks of choice. RS3 also allows entry into the Max Guild, which has the closest teleport to a bank and Grand Exchange booth of any teleport in the game, as well as a portal to any boss in the game, and portals to skilling locations.
  • Singular Stone: when a character hits Level 39 (the highest level in the game), they gain the ability to fly, except Rin who is already capable of flight since Level 9.
  • Stardew Valley:
    • Each of the Farmer's five skills has four different capstone abilities unlocked at level 10, with the player being given a choice of 2 based on which of the passive abilities they unlocked at level 5.
    • Patch 1.6 added the Mastery system, where a Farmer with level 10 in all skills can then unlock a Mastery bonus for each skill. These bonuses include powerful perks like daily blessings, improved forges, and a scythe capable of harvesting all crops.
  • Star Trek Online: Starting with the Delta Rising expansion, all Tier 5 and above ships gained the ability to gain bonuses to certain stats. Tier 6 ships, however, would gain a special Captain Ability at Rank 5. When the Victory is Life expansion dropped, the Dominion-based ships introduced in that expansion gained a Rank 6 which allowed all factions to fly them. The Rank 6 would later be placed onto Legendary ships, which would instead unlock a special, Account-wide Captain Ability.
  • Sunset Overdrive: Downplayed with the final level giving a better upgrade than before, but not a new style of upgrade: Overdrives have effects that improve by 5% each level, except for the final level which increases it by double, a.k.a 10%.
  • Super Robot Wars: At some point, the games introduced "Full Upgrade Bonuses" for each mech. These differ from game to game, some requiring fully upgrading the mech, some requiring upgrading it only to a certain pointnote . The bonus also differs, sometimes being a unique bonus tailored to the mecha or sometimes a generic bonus that the player can choose from.
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: Raising certain Primary Spirits with "Can Be Evolved At Lv. 99" in place of their effect — usually these are characters that have a Super Mode, second phase, or greatly different later incarnation — to level 99 can allow you evolve them into another Spirit, which has higher stats and a more powerful equip bonus.
  • Done with weapons in Vampire Survivors, which get progressively more powerful as you upgrade them, but only quantitatively (more projectiles, longer duration, larger hitboxes, etc.)… until you get them to max level AND have the complementary item, at which point the weapon "evolves" and gains new qualities (life absorbtion for the whip, new patterns for the rosary, no cooldown whatsoever for the knives…).
  • Warframe: There are two separate leveling systems in the game, one for gear, and one for the overall account progress, known as Mastery. Gear that reaches Level 30 has maximum mod slots in most cases, and can be polarized using Forma to add different mod slots, allowing mods to take up less capacity. Certain items, such as the Kuva and Tenet variants and the Paracesis sword, alongside the Necramechs, can be raised to rank 40. Weapons provide 3000 overall Standing experience (4000 in the case of the aforementioned weapons) and Warframes, companions, and vehicles give 6000 (8000 in the case of Necramechs). Reaching Mastery Rank 30 unlocks certain privileges, including 3 free Umbra forma, 30 Riven mod slots, and the ability to use the True Master's Font in Relays to give a buff to everyone present that lasts for three hours.
  • Wild ARMs 5: When customizing ARMs, the last, 20th level of a stat gives a larger stat boost than previous levels. In one case, the stat boost from the last level is more than double all previous upgrades combined. However, since there's a limited amount of upgrade items in the game, it's possible to max out only one stat at a time.
