This novel contains examples of the following tropes:
- Intel-Gathering Bartender: The neutral bar owner Maccadam is a quiet supporter of the Autobot cause. Thanks to his bar being the place to be, he is able to collect lots of useful information simply by paying attention to what Decepticon patrons talk about while there. He only takes an active role when the ancient Alpha Trion is kidnapped by Shockwave, as he realises that Shockwave plans to use Alpha Trion to locate and access Vector Sigma... and that that can't be allowed to happen.
- Truce Trickery: Optimus and Megatron meet at a peace conference to negotiate a peace deal to end their Civil War, but Megatron brings along a squadron of Vehicons to attack Optimus (believing the Quintessons will reward him), while Starscream (as per usual) plants a bomb at the conference to try to take them both out.
- Unexplained Recovery: Skywarp and Ramjet were last seen being eaten alive by the Sharkticons and clearly stated to be dead, but show up near the end assisting Megatron.
