My Hero Academia: You're Next (Anime)
Who will be the next?

My Hero Academia: You're Next is a 2024 anime film centered on My Hero Academia. It released in Japan August 2, 2024 and was internationally distributed in many other countries throughout October 2024.

Set between chapters 342 and 343/during episode 143, with society in chaos from All For One’s machinations, the film sees Deku and friends facing down a mysterious new enemy - an evil doppelgänger of All Might named Dark Might.

The lookalike vows to carry on All Might's legacy in the name of power, but Deku refuses to acknowledge him as his actions go against everything the boy's idol stood for. When the students and citizens are adbucted by the lookalike's flying fortress, Class 1-A must venture to the center to stop Dark Might and his followers.

Along the way, Deku meets a young man named Giulio, who is tracking down a mysterious girl that is connected to everything.

Previews: Trailer 1, Trailer 2, Trailer 3, Trailer 4

My Hero Academia: You're Next contains examples of the following:

  • Alchemy Is Magic: Dark Might's Quirk is called Alchemy, which lets him transmute inorganic matter anyway he pleases using gold as a catalyst.
  • Arc Words: "It's [your/my/our] turn!"
    • Season 3 of the anime has Midoriya taking All Might's words to mean it's his turn to carry on the legacy of One For All and the Symbol of Peace.
    • Dark Might at the start of the movie takes these words as his opportunity to become the new Symbol himself, believing that it's his turn.
    • The penultimate battle against Dark Might has Deku, Shoto, and Dynamight say it's their turn to carry on the hero legacy.
  • Ascended Extra: Tokoyami ends up being extra help during the climax when chasing after Dark Might with the main trio, though he is quickly dropped from the group when he's left to deal with a monster ambush so the others can continue on.
  • Badass in Distress: Most of Class 1-A gets captured by Dark Might early on, with all but Dynamight, Pinkie, Red Riot, Anima, Sugar Man, and Tsukuyomi being trapped in Deborah's Day Dream Quirk, leaving them in their Happy Place until the Vestiges of One For All wake Deku up, allowing him and Giulio to beat Deborah and free everyone else.
  • Battle Butler: Giulio Gandini has the look of a young butler and carries lethal and non-lethal firearms, with some equipped in his Artificial Limbs. He was adopted and contracted by Anna's father to tend her every need as he is able to keep her quirk under control. Armed with a Cool Bike with more weapons and gear, he goes after the people who kidnapped her throughout the movie.
  • Big Bad: Valdo Gollini, the leader of the Gollini crime family, whose desire to become the next All Might leads to his conflict with Class 1-A and pro heroes, declaring himself "Dark Might" and intending to crush heroes' spirits and destroy U.A. Fortress to make everyone accept him.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Heavily on the sweet part. The combined efforts of Deku, Shoto, and Dynamight put a stop to Dark Might and Gollini's plans, saving U.A. and the kidnapped civilians, while Giulio completely neutralizes Anna's Quirk, allowing them both to live together without worry or obligation. But that being said, Japan and the rest of the world is still in total chaos, with the true final battle against All For One, Shigaraki, and the Paranormal Liberation Front's remnants being still at large.
  • Breaking Old Trends:
    • This is the first movie where the subtitle doesn’t contain the word “heroes”.
    • Unlike the other movies, this is the first one to have an Animated Credits Opening, showcasing the protagonists and antagonists featured in the story.
    • The big cities of Japan close to UA are the main locales of this film like the main anime, though it mostly focuses on Dark Might's fortress. The previous three movies took place overseas.
    • Whereas previous movies saw some connection to the greater canon and received acknowledgement in the manga, namely Melissa constructing All Might's suit that he used to face All For One as well as Rody's family, Mahoro, and Katsuma all watching the final battle, this one is entirely divorced from the actual manga itself, namely due to coming out as the manga was already ending, leaving no opportunities to nod to it in the manga.
    • This is the first MHA movie where Shoto plays a major part in the final battle. In previous movies, while Todoroki was a major supporting character, his battles usually involved fighting the minions of the main Big Bad while never fighting Wolfram, Nine, or Flect Turn himself. In this movie, we see Shoto take part in the final battle against Dark Might and is the first of the Power Trio to break past Dark Might's defenses, send him reeling back, and allow Bakugo and Midoriya to get in some heavy hits that eventually overwhelm and bring down Dark Might.
  • The Cavalry: When Dark Might announces that he will destroy UA, several heroes including Lemillion, Endeavor, Hawks, and other Pros infiltrate or attempt to stop the fortress.
  • Chewing the Scenery: During the final battle after Anna’s Overmodification quirk goes out of control, which revives Dark Might and transforms him into a One-Winged Angel form, he loses the last of his sanity and screams for more and more power while he continued battling Izuku, Bakugo and Shoto.
Dark Might: Yes, I can't get enough! GIVE ME MORE POWEEEEERRRRR!!!
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Dark Might ends up knocking the Overmodification-enhanced Ginji out with a single attack... inadvertently wrecking the entire city block in process.
    • With exception of their boss, all Gollinis end up getting beaten without heroes needing to move a finger.
    • The first parts of showdown against Dark Might were heavily one-sided in his favour, overwhelming Deku and Giulio with his energy fists and stone towers. Once Dynamight and Shoto join, the opponents are evenly matched.
  • Dark Reprise: Naturally, part of Dark Might's theme is a corrupted version of All Might's during his introduction.
  • Don't Celebrate Just Yet: Just as Deku, Shoto, and Dynamight manage to beat Dark Might, Anna's Quirk finally reaches a critical state, subsequently leading to Dark Might turning himself into a giant monster, requiring the trio to go beyond and defeat him one more time while Giulio rescues Anna.
  • Downer Beginning: Downplayed. After the events of Season 6 of the anime, several cities are in shambles and many villains and Jailbreakers are still running amok, leaving everyday citizens to fend for themselves, but at least there are heroes around to handle the crisis. Things go From Bad to Worse however, when Dark Might enters the picture to track down Anna while capturing citizens for his plans.
  • Evil Costume Switch: Valdo attempts one when declaring himself "Dark Might" after All Might denounced him for having heart full of darkness, by wearing a dark blue bodysuit with feathered cape and an watermark on the right side of his face. Naturally, he throws a fit about students not getting it when Bakugo insults his design.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Deku notes that Danger Sense isn’t reacting around Giulio despite him repeatedly shooting at Anna and holding Deku at gunpoint when he tries to interfere. As it turns out, he’s trying to kill Anna because she asked him in the first place to prevent Gollinis from using her Overmodification at her expense.
    • Ginji ends up serving as a preview to how Dark Might would ultimately be defeated — getting brutalized in a fist fight despite being turned into unstoppable monster from being empowered with Overmodification.
    • Dark Might is introduced wearing leather bracelet-like mask before revealing himself and gets increasingly angry when Izuku leaves a small cut on his "perfect" face, which he immediately makes disappear. During the climax, Giulio reveals that Valdo used Alchemy to create an All Might-esque mask over his face, because his real face doesn't resemble All Might's at all.
    • In Giulio's dream and flashbacks, he isn't seen suffering from Overmodification's recoil. During the climax, he ends up discovering he's compatible with Anna, allowing him to use his boosted Neutralization to completely and permanently nullify Overmodification.
  • Greater Scope Villains: All For One and Shigaraki. Despite having no direct connections to Dark Might, it’s All Might's retirement and Japan's devastation they directly caused that leads to Valdo's attempt to succeed All Might.
  • Happy Place: Deborah's Day Dream quirk lets her manipulate people into a compliant state by showing them visions of their hearts' desires. She uses it to keep Anna compliant for most of the film. When large portions of Class 1-A are put under, their Day Dreams range from a childhood vision of having a bunch of All Might merch before All Might shows up to take him on an adventure (Izuku), a bunch of busty women in bathing suits flirting with and feeding them (Kaminari and Mineta), happily hanging out with their families (Tsuyu and Todoroki*), and being able to play with the young girl he once saved with his mask off without scaring her (Shoji).
  • Hypocritical Humor: Bakugo as usual. He brags to Midoriya’s team how his team has captured more jailbreakers than they did, but when Shoto informs that his team captured even more, Bakugo yells that no one likes bragging.
  • Interquel: Takes place between the UA Traitor arc and the Final War arc, evidenced by the barrier of UA High completed and the absence of Yuga Aoyama, revealed to be The Mole for All For One early into Season 7 of the anime, and under arrest at the time the movie takes place.
  • MacGuffin Super-Person: Anna Scervino is the film's Damsel in Distress with the power to boost and/or alter Quirk Factors, allowing those she touches to become more powerful. The catch is that it only applies to those who are considered "compatible" and can painfully knock out everyone else that aren't. Unfortunately, it destabilizes her health whenever it is used and causes seizures when she suppress herself. Her hair darkens and she will lose control if overused, overloading the factors of those affected by her. Dark Might and his band of villains exploit her quirk to take on Class 1-A and anyone else threatening his vision.
  • The Mafia: The enemy faction this time around is comprised of members of the Gollini family, said to be Europe’s top crime family, with Dark Might himself as the current leader.
  • Malevolent Masked Men: Dark Might is introduced concealing his identity behind a strap-like mask before removing it to reveal his face to resemble All Might. It is later revealed by Giulio that Dark Might is just a mask for a crime boss and, in the end, Bakugo gets the pleasure of blasting off that mask to reveal his true face.
  • Mercy Kill Arrangement: The reason Giulio spends half the movie trying to kill Anna is because she asked him to do in the event her quirk becomes too dangerous for anyone around her. Deku convinces him instead to rescue her so they both can live on happily.
  • Might Makes Right: Valdo’s core believe that everyone love All Might is because he’s the most hero that’s ever been. As such, when All Might goes into a retirement, Valdo decides to take up his mantle, believing his own powerful Quirk means he can succeed him.
  • Obviously Evil: After Dark Might's introduction, Midoriya admits that his Danger Sense went wild around the man, letting the audience know immediately that Dark Might is bad news and an antagonist to watch out for.
  • Oh, Crap!: After laughing hysterically when Giulio runs out of bullets to kill her, Deborah expresses this when Giulio reveals his robotic appendage leg booster that causes him to fly and to chase her down. Deborah tries to run away only for Giulio to crash into and knock her out.
  • Ominous Floating Castle: Dark Might creates a huge floating fortress which abducts anyone in close vicinity.
  • One-Winged Angel: Initially, Dark Might fights against Deku in his normal form, before boosting himself further with Overmodification and turning himself into an overmuscled version of Golden Age All Might when Dynamight and Shoto join in. After the heroes beat him and Overmodification goes haywire, Dark Might half-consciously constructs himself a new, gigantic, monstrous body from the fortress' parts, with said body mutating even further by becoming overmuscled, growing multiple hands and two additional heads.
  • "Pop!" Goes the Human: When Deku manages to defeat Dark Might in his final form by sending him crashing into the giant statue of the fortress, the last we see of Dark Might has him popping from a far distance, just before the whole fortress is split in two and finally gets destroyed.
  • Retcon: Mirio appears during the climax to aid in the evacuation efforts, despite the fact he doesn't show up in the main story until the battle against Shiragaki in the coffin in the sky/U.A. Furthermore, he also has his Quirk restored in the movie, when it's supposed to be restored during the main story battle.
  • Rewatch Bonus: Has a few from some of the Class 1-A who were affected by Deborah's Quirk within Deku's daydreaming space:
    • A visible Hagakure can be seen from the back checking out different outfits. In other words, this is the first time the viewers can see her at full visibility, as her true appearance was partly revealed via the blue light she refracted from Aoyama's strong laser attack.
    • Ojiro can be seen wearing a flashy outfit in his own Happy Place after he's constantly deemed "normal" or "ordinary" by his peers throughout the series.
    • Sero's daydreaming space involves himself crawling on the tapes he decorated around an empty room, which is akin to a certain American hero he admires, according to the Ultra Analysis fanbook.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Deborah attempts to flee in fear as Giulio's prosthetics activate on their own when he's passed out, and propel him to crash into her.
  • Sequel Non-Entity: Due to being revealed as the fabled UA Traitor in the anime, Yuga Aoyama / Can't Stop Twinkling doesn't appear at all in the film *, implied to be still in holding.
  • Static Character: Due to the film being an interquel set between the penultimate and final arcs of the series but released long after that point, the original cast hold to who they were at that time so the film can easily slot into that period in time. Deku, Bakugo, and Todoroki's big character moment is reaffirming codes they already held while rejecting Dark Might's deluded perversion of All Might's ideals.
  • The Stinger: The post-credits scene provides a cameo of All For One overseeing Tomura Shigaraki, as the latter reawakens during his recovery from his fight against Star and Stripe, showing that the inevitable final battle between Japan's heroes and the Paranormal Liberation Front is only just beginning.
  • Supporting Protagonist: While Class 1-A are involved here and do most of the fighting, they aren't the focus of this particular story, rather the main characters are Giulio and Anna, the film focusing largely on Giulio's mission to save and fulfill a Mercy Kill Arrangement for Anna, it's just Giulio needs to rely on 1-A for help due to being unable to do it on his own. Aside from the Power Trio defeating Dark Might, the only real personal impact 1-A has on their story is Deku convincing Giulio not to kill Anna so they can live on together, allowing Giulio to discover he is compatible with Anna's Quirk and neutralize permanently, allowing the two to reunite as equals and Earn Your Happy Ending.
  • Trailers Always Lie: Poster variant. The main promotional poster depicts Deku, Dynamight, Shoto, Uravity, and Ingenium all facing off against Dark Might, suggesting the five of them will be the main focus of the film and partake in the final battle. They aren't. Uravity and Ingenium are Out of Focus in the film itself, being trapped in Deborah's Day Dream Quirk alongside the rest of 1-A sans Deku, and then spend the rest of the film aiding the evacuation of Dark Might's hostages and fighting shadow monsters. While Dynamight leads a small team against a mini-boss and he and Shoto face another mini-boss and join Deku in the final battle against Dark Might, they don't really have any personal focus in the story, the actual leads opposite Deku being Giulio and Anna.
  • The Worf Effect:
    • Ginji, whom Midoriya couldn't defeat after he was empowered by Overmodification, ends up being taken down by Dark Might with a single strike, showing just how powerful the movie's Big Bad is, and that is before he even began supercharging his Quirk.
    • To highlight how powerful Anna's ability to amplify Quirk Factors is, most of Class 1-A are trapped in Deborah's Day Dream Happy Place, turning them into her People Puppets while Deku and Giulio are forced to take her down on their own.

Despite having All Might’s appearance, Valdo has none of his idol’s heroic qualities. All Toshinori’s declaration of this does is make Valdo embrace it as “Dark Might”

How well does it match the trope?
