Terra Nova: Just What is our Instinct?

Wesley Messer wrote a great column regarding the third episode of "Terra Nova."

----------

Terra Nova is a series that took me completely by surprise. The first episode was a strong start to what’s turning into a fun, family friendly series. There’s still many people on the fence with the show, mostly because there’s still a lot of the fact that this feels a bit generic to some. This series is still in the growing stages in my opinion and really this show is starting to show promise even in the second episode. The third episode should be the test to see how many people are going to follow along for the full season.

This episode titled “Instinct”, sets up more details in setting up the cast a bit more, and introducing a new threat called the Pterosaurs to the Terra Nova universe. The series with this episode is starting to show that this could become one strong series, think Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds” on steroids. In an added quirk to the series we’re introduced to Dr. Malcolm Wallace (Rod Hallett). In the midst of the Pterosaur invasion we have the newly developed romantic tension in the air. Though Malcolm is in complete denial of course but Jim Shannon (Jason O’Mara) has him pegged that he’s after his wife Elisabeth (Shelley Conn) from the start. Subtle your name is not, Malcolm.

I do love how they end up dealing with the Pterosaurs, fairly clever idea and how they handle moving them to a new breeding ground. That’s why they had the situation of re-enacting “The Birds” on Terra Nova. I’ll say this much that budget on the show works wonders, as they attack the Pterosaurs don’t come off cheesy. They actually do work as a legitimate threat in just the numbers they have all around the camp. Strangely enough this makes the episode more fun, which really you have dinosaurs and humans in a constant struggle? What’s not going to be fun for the whole family about this?

TV Spotlight: The Sing-Off Hits All the Right Notes

"The Sing-Off” is a vocal competition, but it has one big difference that sets it apart from other similar shows. The competing groups are all performing their selections a cappella, or without any instrumental accompaniment. However, that certainly does not keep these groups from rocking the stage with their talent.

So, wait … I know what some of you are thinking. You’ve seen the ads for the NBC show, and just listening to the groups you are sure you can hear drums, horns, and other accompaniment. All of that is done vocally. That is part of what I think enhances these performances and makes them even more entertaining.

Host Nick Lachey, formerly with the band 98 Degrees, and the three judges are all extraordinary musical talents in their own right. Returning from the first two seasons are Ben Folds (Ben Folds Five) and Shawn Stockman (Boyz II Men). New this season (replacing Nicole Scherzinger) is solo artist Sara Bareilles (who was a member of the a cappella group Awaken at UCLA).
