i do think a buddie road trip where it is just the two of them in very close quarters is in fact the perfect time for buck to accidentally bring up the fact that tommy saw eddie as competition and force them to have that conversation. like, it just slips out. buck doesn't Mean to say it (or maybe he does. subconsciously. because it's been eating at him from deep down inside where he buried it) and eddie blinks, has to rewind the conversation. replay it. says, What? and buck winces. says stupidly, What? and eddie's like, what do you mean you and tommy broke up because of Me? and buck's like, it's nothing. i shouldn't have mentioned it. and eddie's like, Buck. and buck's like, it's nothing. forget i even said anything. and eddie's frowning like, it's clearly not nothing. and buck's like, it was just a—a stupid throwaway comment. and eddie's turning in his seat to look directly at him
(they're driving btw. buck's driving right now. they're taking turns.)
and buck's eyes are trained on the road in a very deliberate way. like he can’t even look at eddie. and eddie's like, okay so if it's stupid just tell me. and buck's getting annoyed. frowning. says, can you please just Drop It. we're not doing this right now. and eddie's getting annoyed because it's gnawing at him. an itch he needs to scratch. and he snaps, sorry, are you busy right now? and buck huffs out a frustrated breath. and eddie continues, you brought it up, buck. and buck's like, yeah, and i—i shouldn't have. it's stupid. it doesn't even matter. and eddie's like, feels like it matters. and buck's like, eddie, don't. and eddie's like, jesus, buck. just tell me. Frustrated. everything has been so frustrating with them lately. and it's killing him. and buck's heaving in a breath and he doesn't look at eddie when he says, he felt like he was competing with you, okay? for my—my feelings. i guess.
and it's quiet for a long moment.
eddie feels something shake loose in his chest. feels the pounding of his heart in his ears, louder and louder. and he needs to know—suddenly, desperately. he needs to Know. so finally he asks, was he? and buck visibly Falters, takes his eyes off the road and glances over at eddie. for a moment. just a moment. and he looks Terrified when he says, i don't know, eddie. maybe. and eddie stares at him, repeats, maybe. swallows, says again, maybe. whatever's come loose rattling around in his chest. then says, pull over. and buck's like, what? and eddie's like, pull over, buck. and buck's like, i'm not pulling over. we already lost three hours taking that wrong turn. why—why would i pull over? and his voice is shaking. and eddie says, because. and then stops. because what? because the truck feels too small all of a sudden. like it’s not big enough to contain the expanse of whatever is unfurling in his chest. because the last several months are clicking into place. falling like dominoes in a line. because he wants to—he wants buck to Look at him. he wants buck to say it. he wants buck—he wants. he Wants. and buck's like, because? sure, eddie. i'll pull over just Because. and eddie's like, for god's sake, will you just pull over, buck. and buck's like, Fine. fine! whatever you want, eddie. so he pulls over sharply on the side of the desert road like, now what? eyes still dead ahead. and eddie's like, you said maybe. and buck says petulantly, i said i don't know. and god, he's so annoying. eddie loves him. and oh. fuck. that's it. that's what was shaking loose. he thinks probably that should terrify him. but it doesn't. it Doesn't. instead, it settles inside of him like it’s finally found a home. he shakes his head. argues, you also said Maybe. and buck scrubs a shaking hand over his face and says, what do you want from me here, man? and eddie breathes out a soft laugh, lets the feeling take over. says, everything, i think. and buck looks at him, swallows. says, eddie. like it’s a question and a warning all at once. and eddie unclicks his seatbelt, leans towards buck. and buck says, eddie. again. like he thinks eddie might not have heard him. this time more of a question than anything else. and then a tree flies into the car—
no, i'm kidding.
and then eddie kisses him. doesnt think. acts on instinct alone and pushes over the console to grab buck's face in his hands and kiss him. and buck—buck kisses him back. in the way someone who was not prepared to be kissed kisses back. tentatively at first. fingers grasping at eddie's shirt like he doesn't know what to do with them. until he catches up and slides his hands up eddie's chest and kisses eddie back with intent. mouth opening under eddie's with a soft sound that quickly turns into a soft moan when eddie sweeps his tongue over buck's and then. they can't stop. like they're barrelling over the side of a cliff. in free-fall. but with the knowledge that there's a soft place to land. eddie pushes closer, half-falling across the console, and buck is grabbing at him. hands under his shirt, digging into skin. and they kiss until they’re panting wetly into each other's mouths, and buck says breathlessly, are you— and eddie says, yeah, buck. because he's Sure. he's never been more sure about anything. which should be insane considering before approximately ten minutes ago he had no idea he felt like this. or, no. he did. he's always been sure about buck. since that first shift. but he had no idea what feeling like this Meant.
buck tries to lean forward, push eddie back so he can—eddie's not really sure. there's not much space in here. but he gets stuck on his seatbelt and eddie laughs, slides a hand down to unclick it for him. and buck laughs. says, thanks. and then he's pushing across the console like he’s trying to get into eddie’s lap. but he gets caught on the steering wheel and the horn goes off. and then they're both laughing. and eddie kisses him again, feels buck's smile in it. the breath of his laughter that flickers into a drawn-out groan when eddie reaches across and palms over buck’s jeans. which he didn't know he was going to do if he's honest. probably they should stop. they're on the side of the road. but now that he has done it he desperately needs to do it again. to feel. to hear buck make that noise again. so he does. and buck groans again, ruts up into eddie’s hand. which is. wow. hot. So Hot. and says, eddie. eddie. oh my god. we should—back seat? and eddie teases, such a romantic, buckley. and buck says, well if you've got a better idea, diaz. and eddie says, hold that thought. takes his hand back regretfully to pull out his phone. and buck breathes out, says, what are you— and eddie shows him the screen where he's brought up google maps. there's a motel. maybe 20 miles up the road. a motel. with a bed. presumably. and buck laughs and says, such a romantic, diaz. and eddie rolls his eyes and says, well if you've got a better idea, buckley. and buck says, no. great idea. the best. and kisses him, a slow drag of lips. then laughs and says, but i don't think i can drive like this. i need—oh fuck. breaks off, because eddie's reaching between them, palming at him again. his other hand pulling buck back in so he can kiss over his jaw. and buck says, was—was gonna say i need you to drive. but—yeah. okay. this is good too. and eddie says, yeah? and buck says, yeah. literally anything—Anything you wanna do is good. i'm good. and eddie mumbles, so good. feels buck shiver as he kisses him again. then says, but you're right. we should—motel. i'll drive. pulls himself away with a herculean effort. and buck nods, tips his head back against the seat. and eddie falls back into his own seat. tries to adjust his jeans. fuck. he's not even sure He can drive right now. he's so hard he feels dizzy. says, but maybe in a minute. reaches his hand out, fingers trailing softly over buck's. and buck says, yeah. a minute. lets them intertwine.
they breathe for a while. heavy in the quiet. and buck tilts his head against the seat to look at him. flushed. eyes bright. hair a mess. eddie stares back. drinks him in. so beautiful it fucking hurts. buck has always been—eddie has always liked looking at him. has always liked buck looking back. craved it sometimes. would press a hand to his shoulder and look and look, chase buck's gaze until buck met his eyes. in hindsight, probably not normal. he's never wanted so bad for someone to look at him than he has buck. has never felt so settled and sure than when buck looked back. like he is now. they look and look and buck says quietly, he wasn't. and eddie frowns, says, who wasn't? and buck says, tommy. he—he wasn't competing. for my feelings. there was no—it wasn't ever a—a competition. i uh. told him as much. eddie swallows, grins a little. feels like his whole body is alight, buzzing with electricity. says, oh yeah? and buck huffs out a laugh. says, yeah. was a total dick about it as well. and eddie laughs breathily. probably shouldn't but. Well. it's kind of awesome. fuck. and buck says, guess it wasn't much of a competition when uh. it was always gonna be you. eddie exhales heavy, stares. says, rigged from the start, huh? just a smidge of smugness to it. and buck laughs, breathes, yeah. and then leans over and kisses him. in a way that makes eddie's breath catch in his throat. his fingers pulling through eddie's hair, like he can’t get him close enough. eddie slides his hands over buck's neck, cradles his jaw. feels his heart beat out a steady rhythm of, i love you. he shudders out a breath when they part, tips their foreheads together. looks at buck who looks back at him. he steals another kiss, slow and soft before he says, get out. and buck blinks, dazed. says, what? and eddie's like, so i can drive, buck. and buck laughs, nods. and they both get out.
