➤ LATEST GOSSIP ! ⋮⋮ Megumi Fushiguro and [name] [last name] are now d8ing!? Is it too sudden, or was the tension between them a secret this whole time? Either way, the entire school is talking—and we, of course, have questions.

Is this the start of something new, or are we about to witness the messiest relationship in first year history?

➤ NOTICE BOARD ⋮⋮ fake dating • mutual pining • slow burn • fluff • canon-typical violence • cursing • eventual kissing • mild suggestive content (SFW, not explicit) • jealousy • fake relationship • inexperienced reader (dating wise!!)

── That's a wrap on today's paper!! But let us know.. Are you tuned in on the new gossip? I know I am.

P.S ⋮ stop by & check the blueprint (⸝⸝> ᴗ•⸝⸝) ⋮ not school affiliated!! don't even dare report this

゛todays schedule, don't get lost!

001. Terms and Conditions

002. Playing Along

003. “Why are you looking at me like that...?”

hai!! just a little heads-up before the series begins!

since Operation: D8 takes place during everyone’s freshmen year of university , I figured I should put the ages here now so nobody gets confused later on! there’s no major time skip in this one

ages throughout the series : ∘ reader — 18 ∘ megumi fushiguro — 19 ∘ yuji itadori — 18 ∘ nobara kugisaki — 20 ∘ maki zenin — 20 ∘ yuta okkotsu — 20

everyone is aged!up for this AU, so this story takes place during their freshmen year of uni and follows them throughout that school year!

also, just a little reminder that this is a university AU, so things will obviously differ from canon.

hope this clears some things up before we get started!!

also p.s d8 = date, pretty cool i know

Hai guys!! I’ve been keeping this one to myself for a while now but, I'm really excited to introduce my new project called — Operation : D8 ᰔ

I’ve been wanting to write a troupe like this about megumi for the longest time ever since I finished reading "Operation: True Love" if you haven't read it yet I super recommend hehe :) if u didn’t take a wild guess yet, this whole thing was inspired around the book and parts of my actual life hehe. This series will be six chapters long & guys planning this was so so sooo fun like wow why haven't I done this sooner..
this one is still definitely going to be fluff + humor-ish, but I did sneak in some things.. gulp.

I hope you enjoy this series as much as I did planning / writing. >3<

Megumi Fushiguro had never been good with words.

Not the casual kind.

Not the serious kind.

And definitely not the kind that involved feelings.

He rarely told people what was on his mind, preferring to keep everything tucked safely behind quiet responses, blank expressions, and the occasional shrug.

If something bothered him...

He'd deal with it himself.

If something made him happy...

You'd probably never know.

And if he cared about someone?

Well...

You'd have to figure that one out on your own.

There was, however, one thing Megumi seemed perfectly comfortable expressing himself through.

Music.

He almost always had his wired headphones with him.

Sometimes one earbud sat in his ear.

Sometimes both.

Walking to class.

Studying.

Training.

Waiting around between missions.

Even during those quiet walks home you took together.

It was starting to get annoying.

Not because you hated music.

Because you were curious.

What was he listening to?

What songs did he replay?

What kind of music did the quietest person you knew actually like?

You'd asked before.

He'd simply said, "...Music."

Oh, sooooo helpful.

Very helpful.

So eventually...

You decided you'd just have to find out yourself.

The walk home has always been a routine.

Not in the boring sense, like it once was.

More in the comforting one.

The route never changed.

Left at the convenience store.

Across the small bridge.

Past the row of vending machines that always seemed to have at least one out of order.

Then the long sidewalk that led back toward the dorms.

Somehow...

You always ended up walking it together.

Today was no different.

The afternoon sun hung low in the sky, bathing everything in warm shades of gold as students gradually disappeared in different directions.

You, unfortunately, had discovered you were painfully bored.

"...So."

"Mhm."

"...How was training?"

"...Fine."

"...That's all?"

"...Mhm."

You sighed dramatically.

"Do you ever answer with more than one word?"

"...Sometimes."

"...When?"

He thought about it.

"...I don't know."

"You are unbelievable."

Megumi glanced at you for a brief second before looking back down the sidewalk.

"...You keep talking anyway."

"...Because someone has to carry this conversation."

"...Mhm."

You groaned loud enough for a passing cyclist to glance over.

"You know, one day you're going to miss my talking."

"...Probably."

"...That sounded sarcastic."

"It wasn't."

"...Liar."

The conversation fizzled out after that.

Well...

Your side of it did.

Megumi continued walking at his usual pace, hands tucked into the pockets of his jacket.

A thin white wire disappeared beneath the collar of his hoodie.

You noticed it only because the afternoon had become so quiet.

"...Are you listening to music?"

"Mhm."

"You've been listening this whole time?"

"...Yeah."

"...And you let me talk to myself?"

"I was listening."

"You nodded three times."

"...I did."

"That's barely participating."

He didn't argue.

Instead, he reached up, pulling one of the wired earbuds from his ear.

He held it toward you.

"...Here."

You blinked.

"...Really?"

"Mhm."

"You don't mind?"

"...No."

You took it carefully, trying not to let your fingers brush his for too long.

The moment the music started, your expression softened.

"...Oh."

Megumi looked over.

"...What?"

"I know this song."

"...Do you?"

"Mhm."

“One of my favourite songs actually.”

For a moment, neither of you spoke.

The two of you simply kept walking, sharing the same song beneath the fading afternoon sky.

It felt...

Strangely peaceful.

When the song changed, you smiled.

"...You actually have good taste."

"...I know."

You looked at him in mock disbelief.

"...Was that confidence?"

"...Maybe."

"I should've kept the earbud."

"...Mmmm too late."

"You know Megumi, you've changed."

"I haven't."

"You smiled earlier too."

"...Did I?"

"Mhm."

"...That's unfortunate."

You laughed.

"No, it's not."

The corner of his mouth twitched ever so slightly.

"...You're smiling again."

"...You're imagining things."

"I literally watched it happen."

"...Mhm."

"You know, I think you secretly like talking to me."

"I tolerate it."

"Wow."

"...Generously."

You nudged his shoulder.

"You're truly impossible."

"Yet... you still walk home with me."

"..."

"...That's different."

"...How?"

You opened your mouth.

Closed it.

"...I don't know."

Megumi looked ahead again.

"...Thought so."

The music continued, one song fading into the next.

Sometimes you talked over it.

Sometimes neither of you said anything at all.

Oddly enough...

The silence never felt empty.

It was filled with footsteps.

The breeze drifting through the trees.

The occasional sound of cars passing.

And the quiet understanding that neither of you had to fill every second with words.

By the time the dorms came into view, the playlist had nearly ended.

You reluctantly handed the earbud back.

"...Thanks."

"Mhm."

"...Can I make a confession?"

Megumi raised an eyebrow.

“…Hm?”

"I think I liked listening to your music more than talking to you."

He clipped the earbud back into place.

"...I know."

"...You were supposed to be offended."

"...I'm not."

"...Why?"

He opened the dorm door, waiting for you to walk in first.

"...Because you'll ask again tomorrow."

You paused.

"...Will I?"

"...Mhm."

"..."

"...Maybe."

The next afternoon...

Before you'd even had the chance to ask—

Megumi silently held out one earbud.

You smiled as you took it.

Somehow...

It had already become part of the walk home.

Ever since you and Megumi Fushiguro started dating, you'd started noticing just how often he reached for a camera.

Sometimes it was his phone.

Sometimes a small digital camera Gojo had insisted he'd "absolutely love."

Other times...

A worn polaroid camera that somehow always found its way into his bag.

At first, you thought nothing of it.

Megumi didn't exactly seem like the type to enjoy photography.

Then you realized...

He wasn't taking pictures because he liked cameras.

He liked remembering things.

You'd found a polaroid tucked safely inside the clear pocket of his wallet once.

It was you, sitting on his bedroom floor with both Divine Dogs curled up against your sides, completely unaware he had taken it.

When you asked why he'd kept it there, he'd simply shrugged.

"...I thought it was pretty cute.”

That was all the explanation you got.

Though it wasn't just you.

He photographed sunsets.

The ocean.

Shadows stretching across sidewalks.

His Divine Dogs asleep in warm patches of sunlight.

Half-empty convenience stores at one in the morning.

Anything that made him pause for even a second.

One afternoon, curiosity finally got the better of you.

"...What makes something worth taking a picture of?"

Megumi thought about it for a moment.

Then answered as though it were the most obvious thing in the world.

"...If I think it's pretty."

You never asked what he meant by that.

Looking back...

Maybe you should have.

The beach was quieter at night.

The crowds had long since disappeared, leaving only the distant sound of waves folding into the shore and the occasional laughter drifting from somewhere farther down the boardwalk.

The wooden planks creaked softly beneath your shoes as you and Megumi wandered without any particular destination in mind.

The salty breeze carried just enough chill to make you pull your sleeves over your hands.

"...Cold?" Megumi asked.

"A little."

He hummed before slipping the hoodie off his shoulders.

"...Here."

You blinked.

"...What about you?"

"I'm fine."

"You literally get cold before I do."

"...I'm fine."

"...Liar."

Even so...

You accepted it.

It still smelled faintly like his laundry detergent.

The two of you continued walking.

Passing empty benches.

Closed food stands.

A few street lamps casting long golden reflections across the ocean.

Nothing remarkable.

Just...

Comfortable.

You wandered closer to the railing overlooking the water.

The moon reflected across the waves in broken silver pieces.

"...It's pretty."

"Mhm."

"...I'm talking about the view."

"...I know."

You laughed.

"...You make it sound like you disagree."

"...I don't."

You rested your arms on the railing, watching the tide roll in and out.

Behind you...

Megumi quietly reached into his jacket pocket.

His phone.

The case was plain black.

No decorations.

No stickers.

No cracks.

He opened the camera.

For just a second...

He hesitated.

You looked peaceful.

Your hair shifted gently with the breeze.

The oversized hoodie sleeves covered your hands almost entirely.

You were smiling to yourself.

He wanted to remember it.

Just one picture.

...

Click.

The photo came out exactly how he'd hoped.

Without thinking...

He pressed the button again.

Flash.

The sudden burst of light lit up the boardwalk.

"..."

"..."

You slowly turned around.

"...Megumi."

He lowered his phone.

"...Hm."

"Were you..."

You narrowed your eyes.

"...Taking my picture?"

"..."

"...Maybe."

"...Maybe?"

"...Accidentally."

"...You accidentally opened your camera?"

"..."

"...And accidentally pointed it at me?"

"..."

"...And accidentally took two pictures?"

"...The flash was accidental."

You stared at him for a long moment.

Then...

A smile spread across your face.

"...No way."

"..."

"...You think I'm pretty."

His ears immediately warmed.

"...I didn't say that."

"You don't take pictures of ugly things, you even told me this last week!”

"..."

"...Megumi."

"...The scenery was nice."

You dramatically looked behind yourself.

"The ocean's over there."

"..."

"...You missed."

"..."

"...Interesting."

He sighed.

"...Can we keep walking?"

"No."

"..."

"I'm enjoying this."

You stepped closer, peering at the phone he was still holding.

"...Lemme see."

"...No."

"...Megumiii."

"...No."

"You definitely made me look bad."

"...You look fine."

"...Aha."

He froze.

"...What?"

"You said I looked fine."

"..."

"...That's basically a compliment."

"...It's a statement."

"Mhm."

"...You're smiling."

"...No, I'm not."

"You absolutely are."

"..."

"...You smile more around me."

"...Do I?"

"Mhm."

"...That's unfortunate."

You laughed so hard you had to lean against the railing.

Megumi looked away toward the water.

He wasn't fooling anyone.

Especially not when the tips of his ears had turned pink.

The teasing lasted all the way back to the parking lot.

"...Photographer."

"...Stop."

"I didn't know I was worthy of a photoshoot."

"...You weren't."

"Oh?"

"...It was one picture."

"You took two."

"..."

"...Three."

You gasped dramatically.

"THREE?"

"The last one was because you wouldn't stop talking."

"So now you're documenting me rambling? Good one.”

"...Evidence."

"I can't believe this."

"You'll survive."

"...You're keeping them, aren't you?"

He didn't answer.

Which...

Was answer enough.

Weeks later, you borrowed his phone to call yours after you'd misplaced it in the dorms.

As you handed it back, the edge of the black phone case caught on your sleeve.

It slipped loose.

A small, glossy photo fluttered onto the floor.

You bent down to pick it up.

It was the picture from the beach.

Not the one with the flash.

The first one.

Moonlight catching in your eyes.

Megumi's hoodie hanging loosely off your shoulders.

A tiny smile on your face as you looked out at the ocean, completely unaware he was watching.

You looked up at him.

"...You printed it?"

Megumi quietly took the photo from your hand.

"...Mhm."

Before sliding it back behind his plain black phone case.

"...I liked it."

"..."

"...You know..."

You smiled to yourself.

"...For someone who doesn't talk much..."

You nudged his shoulder.

"...You have a funny way of telling people they're important."

Megumi looked down at the phone in his hands.

"..."

"...Maybe."

The mission had taken far longer than anyone expected.

What should've been a simple Grade Two curse somehow turned into three separate curses scattered across an abandoned shopping district, leaving the two of you walking back to the train station well past midnight.

Neither of you complained.

You were both too tired.

The station was nearly empty by the time the train arrived, the fluorescent lights casting a pale glow across the platform as the doors slid open with a soft chime.

You found a pair of seats near the back of the carriage.

Megumi took the one beside the window.

You settled in next to him.

For a while...

Neither of you spoke.

The gentle hum of the train filled the silence as city lights drifted past outside, each one blurring into the next.

You leaned your head back against the seat.

"...That took forever."

"Mhm."

"I don't think I've ever wanted my bed more."

"...Mhm."

You glanced over.

"...You're answering with a lot of 'mhms.'"

"I'm listening."

"I know."

"...Just tired."

His voice had grown noticeably quieter.

You smiled to yourself.

"I can tell."

Another stretch of silence settled between you.

Megumi rested his elbow against the window, absentmindedly rubbing at one eye before straightening again.

A minute later...

He blinked.

Slowly.

Then shook his head.

You pretended not to notice.

Five minutes passed.

His head dipped forward for the briefest moment before he caught himself.

Straightened.

Looked out the window.

"..."

Another minute.

Blink.

Blink.

Blink.

His eyes stayed closed just a little longer this time.

"...Megumi."

"Mhm?"

"You can sleep."

"I'm not sleeping."

"You almost just headbutted the window."

"I was thinking."

You laughed quietly.

"Looked exhausting."

"...Funny."

He rolled one shoulder, trying to wake himself up.

It worked...

For approximately thirty seconds.

The train rocked gently as it rounded another corner.

His eyelids grew heavier.

He blinked again.

Then again.

Determined to stay awake, he reached into his pocket for his phone.

Unlocked it.

Stared at the home screen.

Locked it again.

"..."

"...That didn't help, did it?"

"...No."

"You've been awake since five this morning."

"Mhm."

"You skipped lunch."

"..."

"You literally carried me over that broken bridge because you thought I'd slip’."

"...You would've."

"We both know I would've been fine."

"..."

"So..."

He already knew where this was going.

"...I'm not sleeping."

"You are."

"...I'm trying not to."

"...Why?"

His answer came after a small pause.

"...Don't want to miss our stop."

"I'll wake you."

"..."

"...Promise."

He looked at you for a second.

As if debating whether to believe you.

"...Okay."

That single word sounded far sleepier than anything he'd said all evening.

He leaned back against his seat.

Closed his eyes.

Opened them again almost immediately.

"..."

"...You're still fighting it."

"Mhm."

"You know I'm literally watching you lose."

"...I'm not losing."

"You've blinked fourteen times in the last minute."

"...You counted?"

"...Maybe."

A tiny huff of amusement escaped him.

Barely audible.

The train swayed again.

This time...

His shoulder brushed yours.

Neither of you moved away.

Another few minutes slipped by.

The carriage had grown quieter, the handful of passengers scattered throughout beginning to doze off themselves.

You were halfway through watching the city lights race past the window when you felt it.

A little more weight against your shoulder.

You looked down.

Megumi had finally lost the fight.

His head rested carefully against you, almost as if he'd unconsciously tried not to disturb you.

His breathing had evened out.

The tension he'd been carrying all day had disappeared from his shoulders.

For once...

He looked completely at peace.

You smiled.

Carefully...

Very carefully...

You shifted just enough to make yourself more comfortable without waking him.

"...Megumi?" you whispered.

The train continued humming along the tracks.

Megumi didn't stir.

Somewhere in his sleep, he let out the faintest sigh before settling just a little closer.

You felt your heart melt.

"...Guess you were tired."

He never heard you.

Nearly forty minutes later, the automated announcement echoed softly through the carriage.

"Next stop..."

Your stop.

"...Megumi"

Nothing.

You smiled.

"...Hellloooo Megumi."

A small hum.

"...We're home."

His eyebrows pinched together ever so slightly before he slowly opened his eyes.

For a second...

He looked completely disoriented.

Then he realized where he was.

More importantly...

Where his head was.

He immediately sat up.

"...Sorry."

"It's okay."

"...I didn't mean to."

"I know."

"...Did I fall asleep long?"

You looked out the window innocently.

"...Maybe..."

"...Thirty-five minutes?"

His eyes widened just enough to be noticeable.

"...Seriously?"

"Mhm."

"..."

"...You should've woken me."

"I tried."

"..."

"...Twice."

He looked genuinely guilty.

"...Sorry."

You couldn't help smiling.

"Megumi."

"...Hm?"

"I liked it."

His ears turned the faintest shade of pink.

"..."

"...Oh."

The train doors slid open.

The two of you stepped onto the platform together.

For the first few steps...

Neither of you spoke.

Then...

Without thinking...

Megumi's hand quietly found yours.

As though it had always belonged there.

"...Still tired?" you asked.

He gave your hand the tiniest squeeze.

"...Mhm."

You laughed softly.

"...C'mon."

"...Let's get you home."

The apartment had settled into its usual evening rhythm.

Megumi streamed.

You existed somewhere nearby.

That was simply how things worked.

At this point, it had become second nature. Some nights you'd be reading in the corner of his room, other nights you'd be curled up on the couch while his quiet voice drifted through the apartment. Every now and then he'd ask if you'd eaten, remind you to drink water, or slide a snack across the desk toward you without ever taking his eyes off the game.

None of it was intentional.

It was just...

Normal.

For both of you.

Tonight had been no different.

Megumi was nearly three hours into stream, halfway through another ranked match while Yuji loudly complained about his teammates

"I'm telling you," Yuji groaned, "they're allergic to winning."

"...Maybe they're allergic to you," Megumi replied.

"I've been betrayed."

"You'll survive."

Chat filled with laughing messages while Megumi calmly continued explaining his next play.

Across the room, you finally closed your book with a quiet sigh.

"...I think I'm gonna head to bed."

Megumi gave the smallest nod, eyes still fixed on his monitor.

"...Mhm."

You stood, stretching your arms above your head before making your way toward the door.

"...Night, Megumi."

Without thinking—

Without even looking away—

"...Night."

A beat.

"...Love you."

The words left his mouth as naturally as breathing.

The bedroom door clicked shut.

...

...

...

Megumi's hand froze on his mouse.

Yuji froze too.

"..."

"..."

Slowly...

Painfully slowly...

Megumi remembered.

He was live.

Yuji's mouth fell open.

"..."

"...Dude."

Megumi didn't answer.

His eyes drifted toward the second monitor.

The chat...

Had stopped.

Not slowed down.

Stopped.

For exactly two seconds.

Then—

Complete chaos.

:: "????????????????"

:: "WAIT."

:: "HELLO????"

:: "HE JUST SAID I LOVE YOU."

:: "NO ONE MOVE."

:: "DID WE ALL HEAR THAT."

:: "SOMEBODY CLIP IT."

:: "EVERYBODY CLIP IT."

:: "HE SAID IT SO CASUALLY."

Yuji slowly turned toward his webcam.

"..."

“Chat…”

"...I think we just witnessed history."

Megumi quietly rubbed a hand over his face.

"...Focus on the game."

Wrong answer.

The messages somehow doubled.

:: "HE DIDN'T DENY IT."

:: "HE'S EMBARRASSED."

:: "LOOK AT HIM."

:: "I'M NEVER RECOVERING."

Yuji was trying—and failing—not to laugh.

"...So..."

"..."

"...We're just gonna pretend that didn't happen?"

Megumi sighed.

"...Yeah."

"..."

"...No."

Yuji burst into laughter.

"I KNEW YOU TWO WERE CUTE."

"...Yuji."

"YOU SAID IT."

"...I know."

"ON STREAM."

"...I know."

"WITHOUT THINKING."

"..."

"...I know."

The chat practically imploded.

:: "WITHOUT THINKING."

:: "THAT MEANS HE SAYS IT ALL THE TIME."

:: "I'M GONNA CRY."

:: "THEY'RE SO DOMESTIC."

Megumi looked at the camera with the expression of someone reconsidering every life decision he'd ever made.

"...We're ending early tonight."

"What?" Yuji laughed. "Because you accidentally confessed to your own girlfriend?"

"...Goodnight, Yuji."

"Megumi—"

The call disconnected.

Yuji disappeared.

The stream, however...

Was still live.

Megumi stared at the End Stream button for a second.

Then looked back at chat.

"..."

"...Goodnight."

Click.

The apartment was quiet again.

Completely unaware of the internet-wide meltdown currently unfolding, you had already changed into pyjamas and were brushing your teeth when your phone buzzed.

Then buzzed again.

And again.

You frowned.

"...What..."

Gojo.

Someone folded tonight

Yuji.

Inside...

It was just another morning.

Just another "I love you."
