there's a certain point in engineering youtube videos where it becomes such a conspicuous display of disposable income (CDDI) that i start rooting for the contraption to fail catastrophically and kill them. but this seems to be governed not by a simple total workshop dollar value (TWDV) but more by a ratio between that and whether what they're doing is guided by genuine mad scientist curiosity (GMSC) or not. if there's any semblance of a video marketing analysis quotient (VMAQ) i start hoping they die. although i am willing to make exceptions for whether the VMAQ is implicitly goofy or ironically post facto tacked on because they were already going to do the thing anyway and the fact that it can be rephrased as clickbait is incidental. so basically it's gotta be GMSC ≥ CDDI which = TWDV + VMAQ - GOOF
there's some extremely funny stuff going on in my extended family where someone will be like "oh i have this heirloom that your father made it was his bread bowl i love it" and i will be like "i have no memory of that and he always used a massive stainless steel bowl that went with the flour mill/bread mixer to rise dough but maybe it was before my time" and then i will talk to my sister and she will be like "it's from williams sonoma. i was there when mom bought it. no matter how many times i say this i cannot revise the fiction" and this has happened multiple times now with multiple items
like i'm not sure if it's some combination of the mormon willingness to believe that a beautiful lie repeated enough times becomes true or simply that my mother went around lying to people to get them to take stuff off her hands or perhaps in a more well intentioned way because she wanted them to believe they had a handmade heirloom woodworking item. and then meanwhile my aunt just sold an exquisite set of drawers/curio cabinet that he really did make to a stranger. probably because it was 9ft tall and weighed two tons or something. but still. if you're a woodworking guy. well maybe make smaller items ! make a nice bowl. people go nuts for bowls

they acquired a south african freight logistics company called UTi that had originally booked the contracts in a massive international expansion so shoddily administered that they didn't even handle past due invoices until five years before the acquisition closure, at which point they stapled a collections department onto accounting and started pursuing almost a century of unpaid business from literally anything (at one point i had to ask "are we supposed to be shipping live animals...?" because i came across an invoice from like dubai or UAE or something where someone had shipped a german shepherd, i think, and they huffily said "well no but that was one of our international agents and they must not know") -- crucially for the topic of the post including raytheon and johnson controls and probably several others i've forgotten, but more generally because there was no quality control, oversight, or accountability for regulatory adherence or anything like that. it was far more important to the company to simply book all possible business no matter what
the acquisition made DSV the fourth largest shipping and freight company (after ups fedex and dhl). the i in UTi didn't stand for anything, not even "incorporated." it was just an abbreviation for union transport with an i on it for no reason. during the acquisition the regional manager made a joke at a catered lunch about how everybody was lining up "like at the gas chambers" and when i went to HR about this she was incredulously like "are you sure you want to file a complaint about this holocaust joke??" and i was like "yes" and he immediately got fired and his replacement took me on as her admin assistant. she got the promotion because she identified, if memory serves, that we were overspending on paper by like tens of thousands of dollars for no reason
i originally got the job because i made a joke about nick jonas to the gay collections manager, who turned out to be a creep and sent a coded message through another temp with whom i would smoke blunts at the top of a nearby parking complex, because she went out for drinks with everybody and i didn't, about how he "had a program to sponsor dancers" (i had taken mornings off to take a two week butoh course. which makes the whole thing funnier) and i had to be like "girl. he's got you playing the messenger for sexual harassment in a way that is very difficult to report on purpose because he watched me leave his department after getting someone fired who was fully a dozen levels higher up on the org chart." none of this is directly relevant except as set dressing for the ultimate point:
