@wildhorizon

You can call me Wild. They/she.
(Hey fandom-siblings! I’m still on hiatus but for different reason now, I really want to get posting again but I’ve just started college and sadly just don’t have the time right now. I’m hoping to make time once I get my schedule sorted out tho! I hope to see you guys soon, I’ve missed my siblings!)
I love Wild Kratts, and that’s what I’ll be mostly posting about for the foreseeable future because I’m currently obsessed with it. Profile is a base that I colored, so credit to Kaylink on DeviantArt for that.
Header is a picture I took myself.

Please Read Before Sending Asks!

I love receiving asks, so don't be shy! Anonymous asks ARE allowed. So far my experience with asks has been overwhelmingly positive, for which I'm very grateful. There's just a few things to know:

1. Keep it mostly lighthearted.

2. Don't ask me about shipping. I do not ship any characters in Wild Kratts because I'm just not much of a shipper. I have absolutely nothing against ships, they're just not my thing. I reserve the right to not answer a ship-related ask if I don’t like the ship, or for any other reason.

3. Don't ask me about crossovers. I really don't want to have to do a bunch of research about another piece of media just so I can answer an ask about it, and I definitely will not write a whole analysis for media I'm not interested in. Even if it's media I am familiar with already, I still don't want to essentially write fanfic about it.

4. About "Incorrect quotes" or other memes. They are always welcome! It's totally fine if they're a little out-of-character, we can always suspend our disbelief for a silly meme. Just please don't portray any of the good guys as doing or saying anything deliberately mean or cruel (unless it's clearly specified that it's supposed to be an AU). (Also no ships.)

This is pretty much it. I haven't had any real negative experiences, I just don't want people to send in asks like these just to be disappointed when I don't have an actual answer.

Lastly, expect asks to be answered in around 1-4 days. I have a life outside Tumblr and can be busy some days. I might also be writing a very long response, or I might have a backlog of asks to get through, which can cause responses to take a while.

Now that we've got through all of that, ask away!

Just a quick but important thing I wanna say-

This is pretty different from my usual posts but I thought it was important so I’m saying it now, to everyone, for future reference.

If I ever say anything that is hurtful to you or makes you uncomfortable, please, please, please, tell me.

I’m human, and I can make mistakes. I never, ever want to hurt anyone or make anyone feel unwelcome. If I ever do, please tell me, so I can make it right. Seriously guys, just talk to me. I won’t bite. I can edit or delete anything if it’s problematic.

I really don’t want problems with anyone. I just came to this fandom to make friends. The absolute last thing I ever want is to upset anyone. I know some fandoms can be toxic, but honestly the WK fandom is pretty chill (in my experience), and I never want to change that.

I know a lot of people see my posts, and I know my voice carries weight here, and that’s honestly terrifying. ‘Cause one wrong word could cause a lot of harm. I try really hard to avoid that, but I know I can’t be perfect. So that’s why I’m saying this now. If I ever mess up, if I cause harm to anyone, please tell me. Please just talk to me, leave a comment, a DM, an anonymous ask. I’ll edit or delete whatever is making you uncomfortable, if you just ask. You have to ask, or else I’ll never know. Whatever it is, we can work it out. I want to learn. I want to be better.

But also, please be kind. I have feelings too. Always remember that any blog isn’t just a blog, there’s a living, breathing person with feelings on the other side of the screen. You never know how sensitive a person may be, or what they may be going through. So just be kind.

Please never assume malice on my end. I promise you it’s not like that. I’m just not that kind of person. I absolutely hate (and am terrified of) conflict, it’s not in my nature to start anything on purpose.

I mean we all want the same thing right? To hang out and have fun in a peaceful fandom? So let’s work together to make that happen.

Communication is the key to a healthy relationship, so let’s keep things healthy, yeah?

Anonymous asked:

I'd be interested in seeing you react to Mom of a Croc. I think it's been so long since that episode came out and because of that, it has circled right back around to being a pretty underrated episode despite it being the very first of the whole show (and a darn good one at that)

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll add it to the list!

My reaction to Wild Kratts: Hercules - The Giant Beetle

Asked for by @tentacledsnakelover , thank you for the suggestion!

Martin blatantly not helping and also ignoring Chris saying he could use some help is super funny to me, idk why.

Also Martin likes to read, awesome, we love a guy who’s a book-enjoyer. It’s good for your brain, it makes you smarter. (That’s a simplification of it but it’s kinda true!)

Also Martin likes Ancient Greek mythology! Hmm… something tells me he would love the Percy Jackson and the Olympians books if he read them. (Any other fellow PJO fans out there?) I mean the main character loves the color blue, has a connection to water and the ocean, and is super ADHD. They already have so much in common!

HERACLES.

IT’S HERACLES NOT HERCULES.

His original Greek name is Heracles. Hercules is his Roman name. The reason why Hercules became the more popular name is because of the Disney movie, where they decided that Hercules was a better sounding name despite being mythologically inaccurate considering the rest of the movie is Greek and not Roman.

Since they were using beetle pheromones to attract the Hercules beetle, that means the beetle came here specifically because he believed he was gonna find a lady beetle to make babies with.

They really pulled a “hot beetles in your area!” 😭

Poor guy must be so disappointed that he got scammed.

WRONG AGAIN.

ATLAS DID NOT HOLD THE WORLD. HE HELD THE SKY/HEAVENS.

Atlas was the leader of the Titans in their war against Zeus, so when they lost, Zeus punished Atlas by making him hold up the heavens, for if something or someone didn’t hold them, they would fall down and crush the world. (I initially learned this from Percy Jackson, lol. You should read it if you like Greek mythology cus it’s pretty dang accurate for the most part.)

I kinda wish the writer (Chris Kratt) would’ve actually researched these myths before putting them in the episode. Cus like, these are both common misconceptions that a single online search can easily correct. It’s not like it’s hard. No harder than researching beetles.

I suppose I can kind of understand keeping the name Hercules instead of Heracles despite the inaccuracy simply bc Hercules is the more well-known name, so they don’t have to worry about viewers being like “wait, who’s Heracles? Never heard of that guy.”

But Atlas could’ve been changed to say he holds the heavens and it wouldn’t have mattered. The point they’re trying to make, that he holds something very heavy and therefore he’s very strong, and that’s why the Atlas beetle was named after him, remains unchanged. So why not make it accurate?

Ah well at least Hercules found himself a girlfriend after all.

Aaaaaand nevermind.

YOU FOOLS. What is about to happen is entirely their own fault.

They shouldn’t have left the miniaturizer out in the first place.

And they shouldn’t have let a creature climb onto it like that.

What did I tell you??? This is what happens when you aren’t careful with powerful technology!!!

Jimmy: “They’re probably overreacting,”

Why would you think that? When have the Bros ever overreacted about anything serious like this? They’re really not the type of people to panic or lose their heads easily. Kinda sounds like somebody’s projecting…

I know you’re trying your best guys, but do you really think you can hold back a Hercules beetle? They are one of the strongest insects on earth. I really think you’d be better off trying something else.

Do they not have seatbelts in there????

There’s so much I like about this scene. The comedic value of Chris feeling great in his new power suit, just to get instantly crushed by a boulder. The angst and fluff value of Martin freaking out for his Bro, and desperately trying to save him. And then when Chris turns out to be fine, and he practically begs Martin to get the boulder off of him. And then he’s all like,

this beetle is a freaking Avengers level threat.

AVIVA THIS IS NOT THE TIME TO BE FASCINATED BY INSECTS.

YOU SHOULD BE FOCUSING ON FIXING THE MINIATURIZER BEFORE HERCULES DESTROYS THE ENTIRE CITY.

Chris: “By my calculations, a Hercules beetle the size and weight of a human should be able to lift about a hundred times their weight!”

Chris doing some crazy math on the spot all in his head is super impressive. He must be really smart.

Chris: “We restored the natural order, and saved the city!”

Well… except for that one car that got destroyed. (Which they’ll probably end up having to pay for the damages, since this is all their fault in the first place.)

But other than that, sure.

It’s a good thing Aviva warned the city ahead of time so everybody was able to evacuate before Hercules got there.

But anyway, if this was real life, this incident would’ve gotten the Wild Kratts team cancelled SO FAST. There is no way you can come back from this. I mean, an entire city almost got destroyed, people could’ve been killed, all because of their negligence. All of this just from leaving the miniaturizer out, and letting a bug crawl on it. Oh also not to mention all the rainforest trees Hercules tore up on his way to the city. If this was protected land, that’s even worse.

Sure they defeated Hercules in the end, thereby saving the city, but it was their fault the city was in danger in the first place, so cleaning up their own mess was the bare minimum they could’ve done. In fact, I wouldn’t even call it “saving”, bc that implies that they’re heroic for doing it, but they’re not. It’s like, you don’t get to grab a person and deliberately dangle them over the edge of a cliff, and then pull them back and say “I saved you!” NO YOU DIDN’T.

Sure they didn’t cause this problem on purpose, but still.

Realistically, they shouldn’t be allowed to continue working with such powerful technology like the miniaturizer. It’s simply too dangerous. One little mistake could result in horrific damage or even death. They’re simply too careless with it. There are no rules or regulations for why, when, and how the miniaturizer is to be used. They could do absolutely anything with it, whenever they want, for any reason. And that’s what makes it so dangerous.

But, this doesn’t take place in the real world. Thank goodness the Wild Kratts universe seems to be far more lenient than ours, as the Crew got off Scot-free.

Alrighty, now here’s 5 fun facts about Hercules beetles, the episode doesn’t tell you:

1. Hercules beetles are in the same family as dung beetles. (Source A)

2. A slight inaccuracy in this episode, they say that the Hercules beetle is the strongest insect in the world, but that’s incorrect. The title really goes to the dung beetle. Some species like the Taurus scarab or Bull-headed Dung Beetle can lift up to 1,141 times their own body weight. Meanwhile, according to the episode, Hercules beetles can lift “at least 50 times their body weight”. Yeah they’ve got nothing on the dung beetle. (Source B)

3. Hercules beetles change colour from a greenish or yellow in a dry state to a black when it’s humid in the air. Scientists still aren’t sure why this happens, but it could have something to do with predation or mating. (Source C)

4. They spend most of their lives in the larvae stage, which can be around 2 years. The adult stage of their life as a fully formed flying beetle only lasts 3-6 months. (Source C)

5. When metamorphosing from a larva to an adult, the larva will form a casing out of feces and solidify itself into a beetle-shaped cocoon, even having a mould for the horn and having a segmented abdominal area, allowing it to wiggle around as it pupates. (Source C) Here’s a video (which is included within Source C) of the life cycle of a Hercules beetle, if you’d like to see how they transform from a grub to beetle! (I find it quite freaky, but interesting nonetheless)

Yooo an AMV for Zoology?? I LOVE THIS

My reaction to Wild Kratts: The Food Chain Game

Asked for by @tentacledsnakelover , thank you for the suggestion!

The Bros just got a message from Aviva telling them to get back to the Tortuga urgently, and yet Martin was going to ignore it so they could check out the bat-eared fox. Martin does not have his priorities straight.

Honestly this game sounds like a really fun way to learn about the food web. Why couldn’t my science teachers have let us watch Wild Kratts in class?

Poor Martin, getting chomped by a termite. I do wonder, with how easily the termite cut clear through a blade of grass with only one bite, how did Martin not get cut from the ground, being bitten multiple times? I suppose Aviva must’ve made their grass power suits super extra-tough so they wouldn’t get hurt so easily by creatures stepping on them or chewing on them. Well it worked!

I love that Chris is excited for Martin, that he’s moving up the food web. Even though it means Martin is winning, Chris is happy for him anyway. They’re just so sweet 🥹, I love them so much. That and they make fantastic role models for the kids watching.

Ayyy Gazelle-Chris!!!!! We love that guy!!!

(I’m surprised that gazelle didn’t spook from having another gazelle just spawn in right in front of them. The other creatures in this world are wayyy too chill about the Bros Creature Power Suit technology.)

Gazelle-Chris suddenly hates eating grass now? Despite eating grass all the time in previous episodes?

I guess Aviva must’ve seen how much grass Chris was eating and decided to “patch” the disk, updating the code to make grass taste terrible, so that Chris would stop eating it.

I LOVE that the one time Gazelle-Chris actually WANTS to be chased, Blur has no interest. I guess it’s only fun when he’s scared 🤷 lmao

Bat-eared fox -Martin doing a little dance is so silly. He didn’t have to do that, but he did, just for funsies.

I love how Aviva explains the part of the food web where animals eat other animals. Predators eating prey is necessary for the ecosystem to survive. If there were no predators, the prey would overpopulate and eat all the plants and then there would be no food left and no one would survive.

It’s just the way nature works. You don’t have to see it as sad.

Blur just casually watching Chris get death-hugged by a python. She really does not give a fluff 😭.

Python-Chris “hugging” Martin is kind of funny and cute. He was like “hehe I’m gonna scare Martin by hugging him”.

I don’t think Martin thought this plan through very well. (In case it’s hard to tell from a still image, Martin is dancing to get the lion’s attention)

Chris getting beat up by lion cubs is adorable.

Chris: “Creatures eat other creatures, it’s just how nature works.” Martin: “A lion eating a zebra is really no worse than a zebra or a termite eating a living blade of grass.”

🎵It’s the circle of lifeeee-🎵

Chris: “Meet ya in North America!” *starts driving away*

….

you see the problem here right? You’re in Africa, and you’re gonna drive to North America? Uh, guys, the Tortuga is the other way? Where are you driving to?

I think those python hugs cut off circulation to your brains a little too long.

Alrighty, here’s five fun facts about the creatures the Bros activated with that the episode doesn’t tell you:

1. Harvester termite nests are structured in such a way so that the inside environment of the nest is kept at a constant temperature and humidity level, is independent of the external environment, and the galleries allow for sufficient air circulation within the colony. (Source A)

2. Thomson’s gazelles are the most commonly found gazelle in Eastern Africa. They’ve been classified as a Near Threatened species by the IUCN Red List. (Source B)

3. Bat-eared foxes are usually monogamous, but occasionally two females will mate with the same male and share a communal den. (Source C)

4. African rock pythons (and other constricting snakes) are often misunderstood, in that the common belief is that they kill prey by suffocating them to death. But this isn’t the case. The real way these snakes kill their prey is by squeezing so hard that they cut off blood circulation, depriving the brain, heart, and everything else of oxygen they otherwise would’ve gotten from the blood. This kills prey much faster than suffocation would have. (Source D)

5. African lions, compared to fellow predators, have a very low hunting success rate: thought to be around 30% as a group, where they’re far more effective, but only 18% as individuals. (Source E)

Sources:

Which episode should I do next? You guys tell me!

What do you think of the episodes with the snake power suits? The ones I can remember are the Rattlesnake Crystal, Food Chain Game, and I forget the name of the one centered around the king cobra? Personally I think the snake suits are pretty cool because of the maximum cuddle potential with them that hasn't been touched on yet, but I want to hear your thoughts on them and see what you think about them if you haven't covered them yet.

Avatar

I think the snake suits are pretty cool!

Snakes in general are pretty cool. I think out of these ↑ suits my favorite is the king cobra, bc I think it’s patterns are really cool, as well as the cobra hood, and how they’re so big they can stand up super tall. Also it’s the only snake suit with visible fangs which is cool too.

And now that you mention it, I bet snake suits would be good for cuddling. Cus they can wrap around a person, like a python hug, but without constricting them to death lol. ooh somebody should make fanart of a Kratt Bro giving someone else a snake-hug, lol!

Honestly I don’t really have a ton to say about these suits other than I think they’re cool. So um, yeah, snakes are awesome and I like these suits! 🐍

My reaction to Wild Kratts: Secrets of the Spider’s Web

Asked for by @manicstudios , thank You for the suggestion!

I really like seeing Chris practice climbing and not be perfect at it. Like yeah he’s exceptionally good at it, but he’s not magic. He still has to practice to get good, and he still struggles sometimes, and there are still things he can’t do. It makes him feel more real and relatable.

I don’t think they thought this through very well.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

NO NO NO NO NO

NO WAY. THEY DID THIS ON PURPOSE. THEY’RE TRYING TO FREAK US OUT ON PURPOSE. AND IT’S WORKING.

Hey, props to Jimmy for not being scared of the spider. Spiders are one of the most common things to be afraid of. I respect spiders, but they absolutely creep me out (as previously mentioned).

Jimmy’s afraid of a lot of things, but spiders are not one of them. And I love that about him.

Chris just recording Martin being silly and singing. He wants to remember this moment. Adorable.

Dabio: “Oh, we make teeny dresses for spiders!”

Oh Dabio, so sweet, so innocent. I love him. Too bad he serves someone so evil.

Not gonna lie… it looks like cheese. I wanna eat it.

lol. Aviva said “cross your fingers”, but they can’t bc they’re hanging on for their lives. So they crossed their legs instead 😂 they’re so silly goofy I love them

🎵Spider-man, Spider-man, does whatever a spider can-🎵

Man, they are having so much fun terrorizing Dabio 🤣

awww Dabio looks so sadddd

I know they had to take the spiders, but I still feel bad for Dabio 😭

Dabio trying to feed the spider his sandwich! He’s not the sharpest tool in the shed but he is the sweetest.

I’m as confused as Dabio looks. Why would the Wild Kratts send Donita a gift? Why are they being so nice to her? I guess the idea was to convince her that using materials inspired by nature is better than abusing nature… but it obviously didn’t work bc she continued to be a villain for another 5 seasons.

Guys, you’re not going to believe this, but Donita’s golden orb weaver silk dress? Yeah it’s real. It exists.

Donita, is that you???

Apparently the real-life dress was first displayed at the American Museum of Natural History in New York in 2009 (According to the linked source). While this episode released October 31, 2012, according to its wiki. So this means it’s entirely possible the IRL Kratt Bros (probably Chris bc he wrote this ep.) were inspired to make this episode based on that dress.

Fascinating.

Anyway, here’s 5 fun facts about golden orb weavers that the episode doesn’t tell you:

  1. Every single spider we see in the episode is female. Female golden orb weavers grow to 2 to 6 inches in length, while males are only 0.5 to 2 inches long, so small they’re hard to see. That, and adult male golden orb weavers do not spin webs. Instead, they find a female’s web to live on. (Source A)
  2. Humans don’t have to worry about being bitten by these guys. The bite of a golden orb weaver spider is not considered medically significant. While they do have venom to subdue prey, it is not harmful to humans in any serious way. (Source B)
  3. Most golden orb weavers live for about one year. Their life cycle is closely tied to seasonal changes, especially in regions with distinct warm and cool periods. (Source B)
  4. These spiders are able to change their yellow coloured silk to appear darker or lighter. This depends on the amount of light and colour in the web’s background. (Source C)
  5. It is believed there are two reasons why golden orb weavers have yellow silk. The part of the yellow web which is in the sunlight will attract bees. The part of the yellow web which is in the shade will appear camouflaged against the background plants and bushes. Both help the spider to catch enough prey to survive. (Source C)

W-why is he holding the bird like that 😭

Where did you get this picture from? I’m asking purely for scientific purposes I swear-

4 jackets is kind of crazy, just wear one bigger jacket bro 😭 how is this easier

(thank you so much for giving me this wonderful picture that I didn’t know existed, where do you get itttt)

Anonymous asked:

I was thinking of a little headcanon that bros know and can speak German a little, so when they frustrated they start angrily yapping on this language and others are like: “Oh shoot, the-Austrian-painter has possessed them!” :’)

I didn’t mean something bad, just thought it could be funny..

lol that would be pretty funny!

Imagine them also whispering to each other in German when they wanna keep something secret from the rest of the Crew. Like they’re planning a surprise for someone so they’re excitedly whispering in German to each other to keep the surprise.

Or maybe speaking to each other in German when there are villains around so they can make plans without the villains eavesdropping. The villains would probably be mad at them for it, that’d be pretty funny too!

My reaction to Wild Kratts: Voyage of the Butterflier XT

Asked for by @manicstudios , thank You for the suggestion!

Tell me why Aviva and Chris acted like they didn’t recognize him, and were surprised to see it was Martin. Like, is Chris really stupid enough to see a GIANT BLUE CATERPILLAR and not immediately know it’s Martin in a Creature Power Suit? Does Aviva really not recognize the suit SHE PROGRAMMED?

They had to have been joking. Right? They had to have just been playing. There’s no way they were serious. No way. I refuse to believe it.

Martin named her Maxilla.

Maxilla? Really? You mean like the upper human jawbone?

Odd choice for a name but okay. You do you… I guess.

Aviva doesn’t believe that monarch butterflies migrate 3000 miles, so the Bros immediately jump to proving it by doing it themselves? Isn’t that a little drastic? Does Google not exist in this universe? How did the Kratt Bros learn this information? Why not just point Aviva to the same source? If this information is as true and undoubtable as the Kratt Bros say it is, then surely there must be a reputable source out there somewhere?

I don’t have much to say other than I’ve always really wanted this as a gif so I’ve taken this opportunity to make that happen.

Poor Dabio 😭 the things he does for Donita. She doesn’t appreciate him anywhere near enough.

Uhhh… no. Don’t try to tell me that caterpillar is going to pupate in her hair. No way. There’s no way it would go unnoticed for that long. Remember Koki just said it takes about 10 days for a butterfly to emerge from its chrysalis. There’s no way Donita would ever go 10 days without washing, or even so much as brushing her hair, or even just taking a close look in a mirror or something. There’s no way a whole entire chrysalis would be in her hair for 10 days and she wouldn’t feel it eventually.

I love that line: “Nature’s got know-how.”

Heck yeah she does. Humans learn so much from nature all the time! Species will always find the most creative ways to survive and pass on their genes! There will always be more to learn! It’s so cool and interesting!

Aviva: “It’s butterfly size! You don’t want an advantage do you?”

Martin: “Uh… yeah, I’ll take an advantage…”

Martin has his priorities straight.

It’s hard to see in a still image but the Bros put their arms around each others shoulders when they got on the miniaturizer.

Adorable.

Oh my god It’s actually been 10 days. I refuse to believe she stayed on that pool floaty for 10 days. It’s literally impossible, even if Dabio brought her food, she still must have left to go to the bathroom at the very least, and at that point since she’s already left the pool, she might as well change clothes, shower, sleep in an actual bed, and do literally anything else a normal person might do? In which case she realistically would have noticed the chrysalis in her hair at some point. Soooo I’m just gonna headcanon my way out of this weirdly unrealistic situation.

I would like to headcanon that the caterpillar didn’t really pupate in her hair. Maybe it attached itself to the back of her pool floaty instead, or, heck, maybe it fell off of her and drowned, and this butterfly we’re seeing is a totally new individual that just landed on her.

I am willing to believe anything but that bug staying in her hair for 10 days straight 😭

Breaking news! The Kratts Brothers get hit by a car!!!

…ouch.

I think it’s really interesting how they’re recording this mission like a documentary or like it’s gonna be on the news or something. I wonder what that means for the Kratt’s public image, like are they on the news regularly or do they publish these “documentary-like” videos of their adventures all the time? Like, what does it actually mean to be a Wild Kratts Kid or fan within the universe? Are they watching the Kratts like a tv show? Or just keeping updated with the news? Perhaps the Crew has a YouTube channel or other social media that they regularly post videos/information/updates on? I wish we could learn more about that. Also, why is this the only time we see them recording their adventures like this? It’s not the only adventure thats taken months to complete. The Fourth Bald Eagle also took months, bc they stayed with the baby bald eagle from the moment it hatched to the day it could fly. Why didn’t they record that adventure too? Maybe they did and we as the audience just didn't get see it?

idk I’m just curious and wishing we could see more of the what the in-universe Wild Kratts fans are seeing.

Martin worrying about Maxilla (who is not pictured) when the Bros are barely surviving themselves. It’s pretty cute honestly how much he cares about their creature friends, although I do wish it didn’t come at ignoring their own problems.

w o w

that’s a lot of butterflies

are the animators even alive. Cus holy cow that’s a lot of butterflies to animate. I mean geez. I’m so impressed cus this really is incredible. Every single butterfly is individually animated. Can we all collectively take a moment to appreciate the sheer amount of work these animators did to make this happen? Massive respect to animators, such an incredibly difficult but incredibly beautiful profession.

Awwww they’re cuddling 💕💕💕 so cuteee so sweeeet

On the one hand, awwww he sucks his thumb like a baby (does he perhaps have anxiety to cause this? 👀)

on the other hand, CHRIS STOP SUCKING YOUR THUMB YOU’LL RUIN YOUR ENTIRE MOUTH

Some ppl are kinda confused about how the Bros managed to “hibernate” with the butterflies for weeks, but I’d like to headcanon that the Bros actually left and came back multiple times. So like, they would go back to the Tortuga and live their normal lives, and then every so often they’d come back to check on the butterflies and just hang out with them. This hc is supported by this moment in the first pic where Donita runs over the Butterflier XT bc it’s on the ground. They didn’t land on the ground the first time, they landed in the tree (in the second pic). So this means they must’ve left and come back, and parked on the ground this time.

Martin looks like something a leopard dragged up a tree 😭

Awww Martin has no idea what’s going on, he just heard his Bro shouting and immediately put his fists up. He’s always ready to kick butt for his Bro.

Aw Martin’s so sad for Maxilla, it breaks my heart.

I do like how they turn it around to not be too sad anymore by explaining how they’re not supposed to fly back. Instead, the next generation of butterflies will. This is just their natural life cycle, and that’s okay.

Of course this is just a joke in the episode, and what I’m about to say is totally off-topic, but for real though, this is exactly why if you have a small pet like a hamster, you should never put them in a hamster ball. Bc it’s really easy to get rolling and not be able to stop, and the little creature inside can get tossed around or hit a wall really hard. Keep your hamsters safe, don’t use hamster balls.

Anyway, does Wild Kratts have the highest death count for any kids show? Thousands, if not tens of thousands of butterflies died in this episode alone. (Not to mention just as many salmon dying in Wild Kratts Alaska: Hero’s Journey). That’s a lot of death, man. but hey, it’s nature, so I’m not complaining.

Alrighty, here’s 5 fun facts about monarch butterflies the episode doesn’t tell you:

  1. The episode tells us that monarch butterflies are poisonous to eat, but what it doesn’t tell us is why. Well the reason is because of the plant they eat. Monarch caterpillars only feed on milkweed, and milkweed is filled with a toxic chemical called glycoside. They store that glycoside in their bodies even as they turn into butterflies, so if a predator tries to eat them, they get poisoned. (Source A)
  2. On a similar note, monarch butterflies have their signature orange and black coloration as a warning to predators that they are poisonous. (Source A)
  3. The monarch butterfly is the state insect of 5 U.S. states; Texas, Minnesota, Idaho, Illinois and Alabama. (You’d think they could be a little more original, lol?) (Source B)
  4. Their scientific name is Danaus plexippus, which means “sleepy transformation” in Greek. This of course refers to their incredible transformation from a caterpillar to a butterfly from inside their chrysalis. (Source B)
  5. Usually monarch butterflies use the sun to orient themselves on their journey, but if the sun is hidden by clouds, they are able to sense the Earth’s magnetic field, allowing them to always find the right direction in any weather. (Source C)
