Ripping the arrow out of their own flesh, arrowhead and all, to string it onto their bow and fire it at the enemy as blood gushes down their arm.
i confess i do love it when a character get so scared they mangle themselves. permanent reminder of your frailty and failure to control yourself ππ₯°
youβre trapped! youβre trapped in a cage! your agency has been violated profoundly and youβre so so scared and you should probably chew on on your own leg or rip at your skin or idk. rip out your own catheter about it ππ₯°
Four in the morning and my pain has finally dropped from severe back down to moderate. I feel tired in a way that has very little to do with needing sleep.
Anyway. Here are some thoughts on it, plus previous experiences. Going to use third person for them.
- Being alone and in severe pain is kinda miserable. They don't have the energy or focus required to think about something else or do anything but endure and wait.
- This will probably put them in a bad mood even if they're used to pain. It's just annoying.
- Having sympathetic people around makes it much better. Sharing stories about painful experiences can actually really help because they don't feel like they're trying to do the impossible task of ignoring the pain but they're also doing something nice/fun in interacting positively with people.
- Sometimes it's bad enough or they're tired enough that all they want is someone to sit next to them and go "I know, I know, easy now. There we go. Just breath. It will pass."
- If no one else is available they will do this for themselves.
- When pain spikes they might bite down on whatever is available for a bit, including their own arm. They might also throw up.
- There's a decree of harshness with themselves that comes from being used to it. They'd be upset if anyone else told them to pull themselves together but they'll say it aloud to themselves when they have to do something and have the urge to just curl up in a little ball instead.
- If they're not too tired, they'll frequently shift position to try and get more comfortable even though they know it won't work. It's like the subdued, casual version of writhing in pain. The same animal urge to get away, but without the intensity.
- They'll tremble most strongly in the moments when the pain isn't as bad, because when it is they'll probably be tensed up.
- If they're really used to it, they'll be less tense.
- They might expect their heart rate to have sped up and be surprised when it hasn't even though they're breathing raggedly.
- They may feel the constant low urge to cry or scream but have enough just control of themselves not to and think it would feel childish- again, even if they wouldn't judge others for expressing pain that way.
- They'll probably remind themselves they've had worse (assuming this is the case, though some might say so even if it isn't, or not realise it was the worst they've had until later, because all severe pain feels like "the worst" when they're in the middle of it).
- After a while they'll probably get impatient just waiting for the pain to pass and try to do something. This will often make it worse. Depending on how stubborn they are, they may push through anyway, do it but slowly and with breaks, or decide against it after all.
- As they get more tired, their pain tolerance will go down. Since pain interferes with sleep, this can lead to a continuous problem.
- They might switch between being angry and being gentle/comforting to themselves from moment to moment.
- They might also have moments of bravado or a sort of strange delight where they're just grinning though it instead of grimacing. This tends to happen much more often when other people are around. There can be a fierce sort of pride in knowing they're taking it well.
- Once it abates, even if it's far from over, they'll probably be very tired and just want to rest for a bit. Or they might feel energised by the relief, especially if it hasn't been for that long.
- If they're in pain permanently, then being pain-free is genuinely blissful.
really nice gift for Specifically Me when the character has an immediate and violent panic response to being held down / physically restrained. especially if their affect is usually cheerful or relaxed or reserved and this is their one "sicko mode (wildly uncharacteristic)" button.

i think one of my all time faves when it comes to whump scenarios is when whumpee has to pull themself out of the wreckage of what whumper did to them, they save themself, however means necessary (possibly by killing whumper, running away, who knows.) and when they're back, they try to be normal, try to get back to how things were like before, but they can't, and after a while everyone around them starts to see them crack.
I want more chronic pain whump. Give me a cocky, independent character who suddenly canβt walk because a sudden rain storm aggravated their old leg wounds and now they have to lean on a friend to get home. Give me a usually stoic character shaking with pain during a flare up. Give me a character whoβs finally healed having their first bad pain day and abruptly feeling like theyβre back at square one.
Thinking about whumpees who act like an injured animal. They will not show weakness, they will not show pain. And when it gets to a point where it's unbearable, they will find somewhere to hunker down and wait it out -- or die.
And if someone does notice and come looking for them, they lash out at anyone who tries to help them.
"Get the fuck away from me." "Whumpee, you're bleeding." "I don't care. Fuck off."
And thinking about once the team knows about this habit of theirs: "Whumpee started limping this afternoon." "Shit, our last fight was days ago. How long have they been hiding this?" "I don't know. They won't let me near them. But if it's to the point where they can't hide it... I'm worried." "Don't let them out of your sight. I don't want a repeat of last time."
But until the team learns about it... lots of fun you can have.
I'm imagining a whumpee coming back from a mission or something and avoiding the others for a few days. It's not unusual. Whumpee's never social at the best of times, let alone after a stressful mission. But when the absences tick over into almost a week, the team starts to get worried. Usually whumpee at least says something.
So they go and check on them, and find whumpee dangerously ill. Like, "you should have been in the ER yesterday" ill.
Imagine the guilt the team feels for not checking in sooner. Imagine how surprised and confused whumpee would be to wake up alive in a hospital/infirmary bed.
Is the team angry with whumpee? Is that anger deserved? Did whumpee try to reach out, but by then it was too late? (Too weak to get out of bed, etc.) Is whumpee angry about being saved? (Self-sacrificial characters who don't get to die, my beloved.)
maybe nothing better than your fave who is a liarrrrr having the most miserable time of their life. deciding the truth is worse than whatever respite they might get from showing where theyβre soft and vulnerable and committing to it. And then of course having something carve it out of them anyway like godddd what if you gave the most important performance of your life and it didnβt even save you. what then! what then!!!!!
In a last desperate effort, a character heaves another up over the edge of a cliff or a roof or bridge or pit, yanking them back from the sheer drop they'd very nearly fallen down and both of them collapsing onto each other just shy of the edge, lying on the ground breathing hard, shaky with adrenaline and exertion and relief.
because captivity isnβt just being held in a place itβs so much more. itβs a microcosm of death. you are forcibly removed from the people who love you and the life that you live (by dying or by being trapped somewhere you do not want to be). you become an object (because youβre a corpse or because youβre no longer treated as human). losing all control and having your life being dictated by someone or something else. you donβt even have to be physically unable to leave a place. a marriage can be a form of captivity. blackmail is a form of captivity. it is isolation and claustrophobia and stagnation. repeating the same day over and over and over again, unable to create new experiences, like a timeloop, cycles upon cycles.
and the scars. the way that once you get out the only thing you can think is βIβm never going back, ever again.β and it lingers. you can be the safest person in the world and youβll always be scared of going back. youβll do anything to never go back. the worst suffering you choose will always be better than being trapped.
okay i love love LOVE whumpees who have a fawn response but whumpees with a fight response.... ough......
they will go down hissing and spitting. they have to be restrained because they WILL take out someones eye. when whumpee isnt sedated, whumper ends up covered in scratches from the struggle.
even whumpee's rescuers aren't exempt. whumpee's blind panicked reaction is just as violent. they have no idea where they're being taken but they damn well wont go without a fight. whumpee's rescuer's don't want to tie them up, but they have to or else someone'll end up with a broken nose. it takes weeks before whumpee will even let caretaker get close to them, pressed flat against the wall with the energy of a feral cat, all hackles raised and muscles tensed.
bonus points if whumpee has been dehumanised by whumper so their animalistic fear response is used to further strip them of their personhood. "be a good boy and sit still, hm?" "ah-ah! no biting, whumpee!" "aggressive dogs get put down, whumpee. do you want to be put down? no?" perhaps other people also view whumpee's relationship with whumper that way. "put a muzzle on that thing if it's gonna fuckin' bite!" "get your attack dog outta my face, whumper."
Whump Prompt #96
A feverish whumpee found sobbing on the floor, tangled in sheets, unable to get away. Between sobs, gasps, and whimpers, the caretaker pieces together that the whumpee thought they were being tied up by their tangled blankets and they hate being tied up, they canβt move, and they can behave, and they want the caretaker, where is the caretaker? Please, theyβre so sorry, they just want their friend to come back. Whatever they did, theyβre sorry
I like when tough and cold character goes through the traumas and the party keeps asking them if they're okay, and they don't stop insisting they're fine, so the party has to watch them be the closest they've ever been from breaking. They can see the cracks in the wall but the character is holding it together with bloody knuckles. They just isolate, and everyone knows nothing can be done to ease their pain. The gentle looks of care or pity. The character starting to behave differently to cope. Maybe reveaking a worse side of them to the others. And the party just has to watch helplessly as they erode.
Whumpee who just will not stop fighting.
They are outnumbered, but they try regardless. They punch and kick and fight, but they get grabbed anyway. They bite and get punched and are held down, but still struggle. Their wrists get bound, but they keep pulling on it, even though Whumper tells them to stop, it's no use, you'll just hurt yourself.
They're being moved and they keep struggling, no matter how hard they're held down and how useless it is.
They get locked up, but they keep fighting every guard that enters.
They just won't stop.
Whumper isn't even 'that bad'. Maybe Whumpee is a criminal, and Whumper is just doing their job of capturing them. Hardly a Whumper, really.
It's just... Whumpee has been captured before. Their control taken away, they got hurt. It's not anger, not really. It's panic and fear.
And no matter how hopeless it is now, how hurt they are and how tired, they won't stop fighting for their freedom.
They can't.
