It was just another sunny summer day in Haarlem, Netherlands, when an unusual request landed in Dutch antiquarian bookseller Pieter de Vries' inbox.
A woman named Natalia, identifying herself as being with a company called “2077AI,” was looking to source what she described as a “fairly large order” of books. Attached was a spreadsheet listing more than 3,000 ISBNs along with instructions to match titles, prepare quotes and estimate shipping costs directed to China.
De Vries barely looked at it, dismissing the message as spam or phishing without reading past the first few lines. It wasn't until weeks later, when a Dutch journalist investigating the procurement request contacted him, that he learned of the request's connection to artificial intelligence.

On this day, 7 August 1936, revolutionaries in Spain conducted a ceremonial "execution" of the huge Catholic Monument of the Sacred Heart near Madrid, in a location considered the exact centre of Spain. The statue was shot by a firing squad of working-class people who had risen up against a right-wing and fascist military rebellion, and launched a social revolution. The Catholic Church, which for many years had been a brutal and oppressive force in Spain, supported the fascists in their campaign of mass murder and terror against workers and peasants. Catholic officials described the fascist rebellion as a “crusade”, and supported mass executions of tens of thousands of people. Catholic officials like Cardinal Isidre Gomà even supported Franco’s mass executions of anti-fascist Catholic priests, for example in the Basque country. Fuck, they get bent over Islam referring to god as "Allah"; you know- the Arabic word for "god". It's 'Dios' in Spanish. 'Dieu' in French. 'Gott' in German.

WASHINGTON — Will Lawrence is projected to win Tuesday’s Democratic primary in Michigan’s 7th congressional district, continuing a streak of victories by progressives nationwide as voters signal they want new and more left-leaning party leadership. Lawrence, a 35-year-old activist who cofounded the Sunrise Movement, a political action group focused on climate change, defeated former Navy SEAL Matt Maasdam and former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink.
Maasdam and Brink were moderate candidates who knew they risked splitting votes and clearing the path for Lawrence, but neither was willing to drop out. Their dueling campaigns split their party’s establishment, too, with Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) backing Maasdam while former Michigan Democratic Govs. Jennifer Granholm and Jim Blanchard endorsed Brink. Lawrence coasted to victory with endorsements from prominent national progressives, including Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.). He campaigned on a message of affordability, putting a moratorium on new data centers, ending the war in Iran and fighting President Donald Trump’s lawlessness. [...] Lawrence will take on freshman Republican Rep. Tom Barrett in November. He’s got a decent chance of unseating Barrett, though establishment Democrats fear Lawrence’s left-leaning views have turned an easy ouster into a tough fight.
In MI-07, where now-Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D) previously represented, Sunrise Movement and leftist co-founder Will Lawrence beat out two more moderate/establishment-minded candidates Bridget Brink and Matt Maasdam to win the Democratic primary.
Lawrence will face off against Rep. Tom Barrett (R) in the general.
