What is good belongs to no one

They/them, I like scifi, fantasy, and thought experiments, worldbuilding-ish stuff I wrote (long ago) can be found here.

my essay; The Dangers Of 'Solidarity' With The 1% Of The Population Most Similar To Us And Why We Should Instead Only Seek Solidarity With The 0.5% Of The Population Most Similar To Us is now available to read on substack

obviously it's stupid and exhausting when people try and argue that you can never try to help someone figure out they're trans because of the "egg prime directive", but I do agree with them on one principle, which is that trying to tell somebody else what they are is just kind of rude? like, if I had a male friend who was suffering for reasons that were clearly related to gender, I think it would be incomprehensibly cruel of me not to tell him "there are other options for you, you can always live your live in a way that makes you happier, you should give some thought as to what that would look like," but I would never tell him "You Are A Trans Woman"--not because I hate trans women and want to keep them closeted, but because it would be presumptuous of me to assign him a particular identity based on my own assumptions, no matter what those assumptions are

...and also because there are things you're allowed to be other than a Man or a Woman but I guess we're not allowed to talk about that anymore

"Patriarchy frames the world in terms of men and nonmen" is a thought-terminating cliche that serves mostly to lump the blue-haired and be-pronouned back in with women without quite misgendering them in the process. It persists because almost every corner of society wants these to be the same group, which is of course a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Techbros would just love it if labour could ever be performed by an 'autonomous' 'machine' and render the proletariat obsolete, but that's just not how it works. Friendly reminder your roomba is almost 100% certainly controlled by a third-world worker!

If a post expressing an opinion has more than ten thousand notes you can be absolutely dead sure that it's bullshit. There aren't ten thousand reasonable people on tumblr.

What if a thousand reasonable people can be found? Will this hellsite be spared? What about ten?

People on tumblr love words so it's not surprising you keep seeing them confuse which specific laws are on the books with what's actually happening out in the real world.

"The UK recognizes the human right to clean water!!! Why aren't we doing that?" idk, if 'recognizing the human right to clean water' does not mean anything concrete then it's a useless thing to push for

"Forty US states have laws against desecrating the flag!!! That's facism!" okay but exactly zero of them are enforceable, it's not a pressing issue

etc etc

like I don't think neocities are a problem at any real scale but I do think being anti-datacenter while having a neocities is a real "Gelato isn't vegan?" moment

One morally bad thing I would be very tempted to do if I became rich and famous is make one of their account saying you’re [famous person] looking to give people free money if they do [actions that obviously gets you scammed] except I actually would be them and would just give them them the money exactly as described

frequently find myself doing the opposite from those fantasy writers who put potatoes in an otherwise Europesque world when I find myself thinking coffee is South American

i think it's fair to assume that in the world of darkness there's this common but poorly understood form of acute anemia that seems to affect people at random with no apparent cause. and it usually goes away after a few weeks, although sometimes it might be a recurring thing. there's a hypothesis that it might be connected to low vitamin d levels, since it's more common in people working night shifts or being otherwise active at night, but studies don't really show any conclusive evidence. probably nothing to worry about, you know how weird bodies can be sometimes

i do expect a certain contingent to get like 10x more insane about lesbianism once they start considering a world where most bi women shack up with each other and one in five straight men just mathematically can't find a partner. not saying it'll happen but unlike past iterations of the fear this time it's at all statistically possible

~30% of gen Z women is queer compared to ~10% of gen Z men (closer to 20-10 for millennials), a difference that mostly comes down to bisexual women, and like, that's an insane statistic right? And yet I can't actually find fault with it, I've spent years in a young college town bi-women-and-straight-men social circle where I didn't exactly get the impression anyone there would have had a problem with the men getting together and yet it happened approximately never!

Like where are the bi men? Are these guys jerking it to reddit femboys and then deciding they're still totes straight, are they woke but secretly afraid of a non-sexist relationship, does testosterone make you exclusively attracted to women? Am I just underestimating the amount of brainworms the average straight-by-default man has about sucking dick?

Okay probably that last one but it's kind of a silly reason for such a huge gulf.

Evil wizard offers you a choice:

For the next ten years, every day you'll be in a great mood, nothing that interferes with your life, just good happy days the way you just have those sometimes.

However, after the decade, you will magically become convinced that you spent these years in a terrible depression, and you will dismiss all evidence to the contrary as self-deception (eg, if you see a picture of yourself having fun with friends, you'll claim there's obviously a deep sadness behind your eyes, and that you remember feeling awful and were just putting up a brave face)

This effect will last for the remainder of your life and nothing will ever be able to change your mind.
