i always see people get mad at Percy for forgetting things/events/people but LISTEN-
Percy has ADHD. a common symptom of ADHD is a lack of object permanence, meaning that if [thing] is not in sight, it is forgotten about completely.
(this is because the mind is taking in so much information at once that it can't hold onto ideas/thoughts that are not present or critical at the time. it's literally the phrase “out of sight, out of mind” but taken very very seriously)
typically only babies have no sense of object permanence, but it some cases—like in people with ADHD👀—it extends into adolescence and even into adulthood.
so pLEASE, when Percy forgets about his friends, family, fellow campers, or any other person, place, or thing that should be important to him, blame his ADHD. he's not doing it on purpose!!

reconnecting with old friends is so weird. like you know the names of my family but its been so long i might have to reintroduce you. i remember what name you'd use when we played make-believe and now it feels more you than your real name.
you’re familiar to me in the way the changing of seasons is familiar. though the branches bear our weight over summer, i don’t recognize you without your leaves. our fortresses stood mighty and unyielding in the winter but when spring arrives nothing remains. i know who you used to be but not who you are. our past has been my present because there was nothing new to reshape it.
now it’s summer again and even though the roots are the same, i don’t know the branches like i used to. i perch lightly because who knows if they’ll still bear my weight? the carving we made still exists in the bark but i can’t reach it anymore. will it still exist next year, when i cant see it at all?
rekindling friendships is confusing. i don't know you, old friend. i knew you, but i don't know you. we are strangers with the same memories. i am fooled into thinking i know you better than anyone. the scar on your forehead came from my computer desk. that barbie dress i gave you is still at your parents’ house. but what use are memories when your favorite color has changed?
