A message to those who are going through syscovery, or have only recently gone through it:

Syscovery doesn't usually happen all at once. You'll figure out you're a system, but you typically won't have access to all of your alters or even know that they all are there, your communication with them will likely be poor or non-existent, you almost always won't fully remember (or even remember anything about) the trauma that gave you a cdd, and you likely won't have access to an inner world or headspace yet.

Syscovery can also happen in bursts or cycles. You can continually discover your system, fall into denial/forget about it, then it can be revealed to you again. We went through about 3 or 4 syscoveries BEFORE diagnosis.

As your acceptance becomes more consistent and you begin to feel more safe, your alters and some of your repressed memories will begin to reveal themselves. Communication will improve. Awareness of switches, fronts, co-consciousness, etc. will improve.

And, it won't be linear. Alters can shut down, go dormant, communication can be halted or get worse, amnesia can affect your knowledge of your system, denial can overtake you

Just keep in mind that healing isn't linear, and neither is self-acceptance. Denial and amnesia work together, and denial itself is one of the most commonly reported symptoms of all cdds. Be kind and patient with yourselves.

friendly reminder to anyone who knows what a dissociative disorder is:

it is spelled dissociation. dissociation (diss-so-see-aye-shin) is an involuntary disconnect/detachment between the brain, the body, and the surroundings. sociare, latin for 'to connect with others', is the root word in dissociation, and dis- is the prefix, meaning 'the opposite of', in this case, means the opposite of connection.

there is also disassociation. disassociation (diss-uh-so-see-aye-shin) is a voluntary thought process in which you attempt to break off from a group/person/idea, or to stop associating with them. associate is the root word in disassociation, and dis- is the prefix, meaning 'the opposite of', in this case, means the opposite of association.

very similar words, somewhat different meanings!

there's nothing wrong with learning about and educating people on DID but there is something wrong with treating DID like the only real and true configuration of multiple social identities (alters) in one bodymind.

like yes research is coming out showing the physical, neurological manifestations of DID. no that does not mean we're real and all other systems are either just less severe variants of us or not real at all.

if you wanna talk about dissociative systems, do that. go ahead. i love doing that. but a system with DID, a system with OSDD, a system with UDD, a system with P-DID, a system with spiritual origins, a system with developmental origins, a system with voluntary origins (etc) are all going to have different experiences. and that is. completely. fine.

it takes away nothing from any of us to acknowledge each other's existence, learn about how other systems function, and avoid making assumptions about a system based on origin/diagnosis. if anything, once you do that, you understand your own system so much more than you ever would have if you only understood your own origin. and i'm not just saying this to disso-traumagenic systems either.

there is honestly a massive problem in the plural community with misinformation and origin-inappropriate advice. this is detrimental for both traumagenic and endogenic systems - people have physically hurt themselves because of invalidation of identity or triggering of trauma.

if you're traumagenic, learn about endogenic systems. if you're endogenic, learn about traumagenic systems. if you're a dissociative system, learn about non-dissociative systems. if you're a non-dissociative system, learn about dissociative systems.

keep an open mind, but also keep your critical thinking. the medical and psychiatric system are in general not great sources; look for the niche or freshly written neuro papers, and plural writers & activists. two topics that are good to start with are functional multiplicity and innate / protogenic systems. maybe will reblog this with links.
