It’s cherry blossom season, AKA the three weeks a year that I actually care about doughnuts! Because of sakura flavors at Mister Donut!

First, I decided to try the Spring-Infused Strawberry Whip Daifuku-Style and the Blooming Strawberry Milk Custard.

They both had the characteristic springy, mochi texture that I really like, and the strawberry-sakura combo gave it a nice tartness. The downsides were that I couldn’t really perceive any whipped cream in the Strawberry Whip and that the strawberry milk-flavored bean paste on top of the Custard (which explicitly does not contain custard) combined with the fat in the dough to leave kind of a greasy film on your mouth, ala Captain Crunch.

And I’d never managed to try all four before, due to a combination of they sell out fast, Misudo is kinda far, and also I can’t eat that many doughnuts, but this year, the stars aligned! I managed to make it back and find the Spring Scented Strawberry Flavour and the Flower Swaying Strawberry Milk Custard (which actually does contain custard)!

I kinda liked the simplicity of the Spring Scented Strawberry, but it was crazy sweet—or at least that’s what I thought until I tried the Flower Swaying! Which is a sandwich style doughnut filled with custard and strawberry milk bean paste, and it was so sickeningly sweet that I struggled to finish my half. Especially the bit with the extra icing.

Ultimately, there was nothing I liked as much as the past couple years’ offerings! It could be because they’re getting more and more elaborate and sweet, or it could be because I am getting old and maybe my window of liking doughnuts was very small, or we may never know! But I had fun trying them all!
