Elka only met Chea once, and that was when the Toma’s saw off Emil on his way out of the city and on his mission. Elka was definitely acting more for the Captain’s benefit with the badge deal, using it to try and motivate him out of his gloom. And because she really felt and continues to feel rather lost when it comes to dealing with this. I mean, how do you comfort a friend whose wife’s so cruelly told him to piss off because she’s fallen in love with another dude and is going to have his baby? It’s harsh stuff, there’s no good way to approach it. Plus there’s the added complication of uh, she only knows about this because she snuck into his saddlebag and read his mail. Awkwaaaaard.

It’s not really important that Elka personally knows Chea though. A little kid’s a little kid. What she does know is that the Captain is crazy about his daughter. That’s a relationship Elka will definitely do her best to protect.

Or, well, I mean she would if she wasn’t totally dead I’m serious.
