If you watched #Rihanna’s #SavageXFenty fashion show as soon as it came out today, you probably wondered who in the he’ll choreographed this amazing masterpiece? Her name is Parris Goebel. She’s a choreographer, dancer, singer, director & actress from New Zealand. She’s #Samoan #Chinese & #Scottish. She is the founder & main choreographer of the dance school "The Palace Dance Studio", in which groups such as: ReQuest, Sorority, Bubblegum & The Royal Family stand out, the latter has won the World Hip Hop Dance Championship three times in a row, becoming the first group in history to achieve it. Parris has been recognized for creating a legacy for #PacificIslanders, especially young women. “To be recognised & celebrated by my people is special & most meaningful.” She attributes her success because of her father & for her #Pacific heritage. “For someone like me, who has worked really hard to make my dreams come true & also inspire other Pacific people, it is encouraging & empowering. It lets me know I’m doing something good. Us Pacific people, we work hard, we make do with what we’ve got, even if we don’t have much. My Pacific heritage has played a huge part in who I am, what I’m about, what I stand for & what means the most to me; family, love, giving back, service.” She choreographed this year’s fashion show as well as last years & it included other mixed race celebrities: Miguel, Nazanin Mandi, Bella Hadid, Lauren Harrier & of course Rihanna. She’s also famous for choreographing Justin Bieber’s “Sorry” video. LU’AU

This past weekend, our university held our 16th annual Pacific Islanders Organization Lu’au. At Azusa Pacific University, there are a variety of ethnic organizations to be involved in. The groups create space to fellowship, share, learn, and celebrate culture and cultural diversity on campus. Each year, Pacific Islanders Organization, commonly known as PIO, puts on a lu’au to share and celebrate Polynesian culture with the entire community. Students, friends, and family from all over attend, and this year the organization was able to sell out with over 1400+ tickets.

For months, students from Hawaii, of Polynesian ancestry, and other students who have a desire to learn about the culture practiced weekly to prepare for the event. There were a variety of dances from multiple Polynesian islands, ranging from Hawaii to Tahiti to Samoa. Colorful prints filled the stage, as attendees were given leis, and Hawaiian food was served. Over 150 students participated, transitioning in traditional dances and chants.

Through dance, we as students were able to share culture, but also share a way of worshipping our Savior, Jesus Christ. There is great pride in the production and “ohana” that we created over the last few months. Many of us say, that this has been one of the best and most spiritual experiences of our life. I hope you have the chance to one day celebrate with us!

Love it when I get a package! I actually read (local libraries rock) both of these last month, but absolutely had to own them. Just like Black history month, #aapiheritagemonth is 365! To hell with them removing books from schools - start your own ethnic studies. Anymore suggestions of what I should read? Anything by #PacificIslanders especially. https://www.instagram.com/p/Ce9ID0tOA6U/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
