The toe taps create such an amazing moment in this story. Ilya and Shane are obviously into each other early on, but this is the first time they’re genuinely vulnerable with each other in public. It's so essential to their relationship because it solidifies the foundation of their mutual respect.

Ilya allows Shane to step in and help him. Acknowledging that he would even consider accepting help is a fucking nightmare for someone who hates asking for it, especially when he wants to be seen as super competent, sexy, and capable 24/7. And even more so given he’s still only a teenager.

On the flip side, Shane does him a solid when he could have let him fall on his face. This is the guy who took 1OA over him in the draft, who beat him in an international tournament, and who knows his biggest secret in the world. Shane is being vulnerable, too, when he lets Ilya know that he cares and wants to see him succeed—not just hook up with him.

They never stood a chance at keeping this casual.
