softer, harder, in-between

synopsis you and Jack have always been two peas in a pod, working the ER together, on the field together, no wonder you started to search for those dark eyes and damning smirk. and you thought for a second, just for a second, he might be searching for you too, until you hear the man you're crushing on airing out everything he hates about you

warningstypical medical drama stuff, in-accurate medical terms. miscommunication. angst. insecure reader. language, jack says things he doesn't mean about reader. angry love confession in the rain. this is not proof-read

authornotei really really really loved this idea and tried so hard to do it justice, I hope you like anon. I tried to stay close to the SWAT idea but I'll be honest I know nothing about American army stuff (i'm british) so I sort of set it as much in the Pitt as I could. I also couldn't find ANYTHING for Jack's military background so I made up some SWAT guys

Just when you thought the rest of your day was going to be boring, Jack Abbot and his crew of SWAT pushed through the ambulance bay doors, yelling off stats, applying pressure where needed and clearing the way around them.

Which was a welcome change from trying to sell Robby your hypothetical first born child in exchange for a lunch break.

“Intubated neck wound, stats are going down. Got a room?” said Jack.

the townhouse on the corner

jack x shy!reader | find part two here | mdni

first time she pointed out the townhouse, jack didn't think much of it. he hummed in response, holding onto her smaller hand even tighter as a biker was passing them on the sidewalk.

they were walking back from their favorite coffee shop, paper cups warming their hands against the chilly pittsburgh morning.

she'd stopped in the middle of the sidewalk, staring across the street with that dreamy look she got whenever something captured her attention.

"ugh.” she swooned. “that's my favorite house," she'd said.

jack had followed her gaze.

It feels like constant whiplash; every day there’s something new.

People have this thought about Nazi Germany of, “How could people ever let it get that bad?  Why didn’t anyone stop it?”

Take a look at America right now, this is how it happens.

Imagine if the whole of the country emphatically condemned the North Carolina bathroom ban; drew a line in the sand saying that trans people are deserving of the same rights, protection, and dignity that anyone should have.

“It doesn’t affect me.”

“You’re not in North Carolina, why do you care?”

“uuugh, you’re being so sensationalist.”

This is yet another step on the path of transgender genocide that America has already been traveling, and the general population thinks it’s ok.

I say they think it’s ok because most folks aren’t screaming at the top of their lungs drawing attention to it.  If you saw a fire spreading in your building, you’d call 911, you wouldn’t wait for it to become a blazing inferno first.

The fire is spreading in the United States, why are you waiting to say something?

“You know, people like you are the reason Trump won,” a family member told me in 2024.

That family member is still watching the inferno blaze, and even hosts the people who set the flame.

Yeah, people like me.
