"Roy?"

He looks up from his phone at the urgent tone in his partner's voice, instantly on alert.

"What is it?"

"My picture's in the news," Riza says shakily.

He sighs and leans over beside her in bed to see that she's scrolling through a local news website. There's an article about her kidnapping.

"Yeah," he says. "The media's definitely interested in the story. But if you read the articles, you're being lauded as a hero who helped bring down a serial killer. Because that's exactly what you are."

Riza slams her phone down onto her nightstand and crosses her arms over her chest, then hisses in pain. The bite on her breast has been irritating her more and more. He didn't like the way it looked when he bandaged it earlier, but she continues to insist it's getting better. He knows better than to push the issue now when she's already getting upset about the media.

"I don't feel like a damned hero," she mutters. "I feel like a victim."

"You're both," Roy says. "You're both a woman who was kidnapped and traumatized and a brilliant police detective who stopped a dangerous criminal. They aren't mutually exclusive, you know."

She picks her phone up again, and as much as he wishes he could stop her, she starts reading the article.

"This is ridiculous," she mutters. "This talks about my background—where I went to school, my employment history, major cases I've been involved with. It's a gross invasion of privacy."

It's only the beginning of what she's going to have to deal with in terms of having her privacy invaded if the case against Kimblee goes to trial, and they both know it.

"How did they even get that photograph?" she complains.

"It's on the CMPD website, love. It's not exactly a state secret."

She slams her phone down on the nightstand again.

"You're going to break it if you keep doing that," he says lightly.

Riza only huffs.

"Can you turn off the lamp?" she asks irritably a minute later. "I'd like to try to get at least a little bit of sleep at some point tonight."

Roy doesn't take the bait by arguing with her, even though they both know perfectly well that he's not the reason she hasn't been sleeping.

"Sure," he says easily, closing his own sudoku puzzle app, plugging in his phone, and flicking off the lamp. He lays down under the covers, but Riza stays sitting up beside him. "Do you want me to get—?"

"No," she snaps without letting him finish.

"You didn't know what I was going to say," Roy tries to tease. "I could have been offering to get you a diamond necklace or—"

"I don't want more medications, Roy," she grumbles, finally laying down on her side, facing away from him. "I hate the way they make me feel."

"Not even just to help you sleep?" he suggests tentatively, wincing as he waits for her inevitable anger.

What he gets is worse.

There's silence. Then he hears a sniffle, and his heart sinks.

"I leave for one day," At the sound of Riza Hawkeye's stern voice booming from the doorway, Roy Mustang damn near jumps out of his desk chair. "And this is what I come back to? Are you serious?"

Of course, the idea that he is some lazy bastard that the poor, studious lieutenant has to keep in line is a show that they put on to ensure high command has no idea what Roy gets up to when they're not looking… Mostly. But, sometimes, on Riza's rare off days, Roy has been known to let the team fool around a little more than they usually would.

Now, she has come in on her day off in her bell-bottom pants and airy purple blouse with her hair down to chew them out. Somehow, she's actually scarier without the uniform than with it. Roy also doesn't doubt that she's armed. And their teammates are sitting in the corner, Fuery, Breda, and Falman cheering Havoc on while he tries (and fails) to crush a whole watermelon between his muscular, uniform-clothed thighs.
