Orpheus sees Eurydice and the first words out of his mouth are "Come home with me." This story repeats, over and over, and all he ever wants is to bring her home.
Eurydice asks "Who are you?" and Orpheus replies "The man who's gonna marry you." They never have a chance to actually get married, meaning that he is repeatedly, eternally, the man who is GOING to marry her. His identity in the time loop of their story is more tied to this than it is to his own name.
I watched the Hadestown proshot yesterday and I do NOT see enough people talking about how absolutely SMITTEN Orpheus was for Eurydice at the beginning (obviously he’s madly in love with her throughout the entire thing but ykwim)
he genuinely looked like he was gonna combust when Eurydice touched him😭😭😭 HE WAS ON HIS KNEES FOR HER FOR LIKE HALF OF THE FIRST ACT
