Two complete fuselages were built for static and load testing.

The C-17 was built in Long Beach, California, and the first C-17 squadron was declared operational in January 1995. The C-17 fleet participated in many contingency operations, including the transport of troops and equipment to Operation Joint Endeavour to support peacekeeping in Bosnia and Operation Allied in Kosovo.
