The same day Cocoon, the manga by Machiko Kui, was released in English, GKIDS announced its acquisition of the English release of the anime adaptation.
“San and Mayu are two schoolgirls living in Okinawa during the closing months of the Pacific War. Together with their classmates, the two friends are drafted into the war effort as nurses for wounded soldiers. When ordered to die for their country, the remaining members of the group escape only to face the harsh environment of a tropical paradise that has become a hellish battlefield.”
The story is based on the true story of the Himeyuri Unit, a group of teenage students and teachers from Okinawa that were formed into a nursing unit during The Battle For Okinawa in 1945.

“Love” by Ryoko Kui from Terrarium in a Drawer
If you’re confused by the shortness of this story, I’d suggest reading it again and keep in mind that only one sentence in this story is a lie.
And if you figured out what happens next and you like that sort of thing, then I’d recommend you pick up Terrarium in a Drawer, it’s a really fantastic compilation of short stories.
I wanted to post about this incident because I saw an English translation of the Twitter thread describe the incident as Kumiko Saiki being “attacked,” I assume based on the site’s unreliable translation function, so I wanted to set the record straight. At the same time this is still an upsetting incident, and I truly hope Saiki-sensei will be able to make a full recovery.
