Stuff about Minneapolis

Hi, I'm Paul and this is just a hodgepodge of stuff about the people, places, and events in and around Minneapolis and the Twin Cities that you may enjoy. Thanks for stopping by!

On this day (OTD), June 27, in Jayhawks history.

6/27/85 - The Jayhawks perform in the 7th St Entry in Minneapolis for the fifth time in as many months. The Jayhawks' Entry debut - and the first show with Gary Louris in the lineup - was on 2/22/85, opening for Alex Chilton.

6/27/86 - Show at the tiny 400 Bar (now RIP) on the West Bank of Minneapolis, a key venue and neighborhood for the early Jayhawks.

6/27/96 - Golden Smog perform at Slim's in San Francisco on a short summer tour of the West Coast. Setlist: https://bit.ly/4kj3Xw4

6/27/03 - First of two nights for The Jayhawks at Irving Plaza in NYC. The Thorns (featuring Matthew Sweet) and Carla Werner open. Two very rare covers pop up in the encore: 10cc's "I'm Not in Love" and Rosanne Cash's "Seven Year Ache." Sweet joins The Jayhawks for the final encore of "Tailspin." Setlist: https://bit.ly/40ie4tC

6/27/06 - Tim O'Reagan's lone solo album is released on Lost Highway. A slightly different version of the album was released the year before on a tiny St. Paul, MN independent label. O'Reagan toured the album - including an opening slot on the 2006 Golden Smog "Another Fine Day" tour - with a band consisting of Jim Boquist on guitar, Peter Anderson on drums, Frankie Lee on bass and O'Reagan up front on guitar and vocals.

6/27/14 - Gary Louris joins Run Westy Run during the encore at a First Ave show in Minneapolis, 6 months after the Westies ended a long hiatus by performing their first live show in 15 years on the same stage.

6/27/16 - A 5 piece Jayhawks lineup with Chet Lyster perform songs from Paging Mr Proust at a session at KDHX in St. Louis, MO. Videos: https://bit.ly/44hrNC8 & https://bit.ly/46avSdS

6/27/20 - The Jayhawks appear on CBS This Morning performing songs that were recorded outdoors in the backyard of a private residence in St. Paul, MN since it was impossible to use an indoor space due to pandemic restrictions. https://bit.ly/4k5Go9C

"Every muscle in the body seems doubly tense and elastic, each motion is a triumph, and the luxury of mere life, the joy of living, is never better understood, under the softest Italian sky at Florence, than it is in St. Paul, Minnesota, with the thermometer at 40 degrees below zero."

A high bar for Minnesota weather was set in this 1853 Minnesota Year Book, in which travelers are encouraged by a description of "the most salubrious and healthful" of the climates in North America. We wonder how many were disappointed by what awaited them.

Take a flip through this new acquisition, which was printed by one of the few booksellers in St. Paul in 1853, Le Duc & Rohrer. William Le Duc was a lawyer who moved to St. Paul in 1850 and established himself as a bookseller and practicing attorney. Le Duc was heavily involved in the early promotion of Minnesota and was made commissioner for the state at the 1853 World's Fair (where he took a bison through New York City!). He was quite industrious and started many businesses, with varied success, in between his involvement in chartering the first railroad for the region and serving as the fourth U.S. commissioner of agriculture.
