ok this is kinda nuts bc while AI tools can be good for quickly locating a large body of SECONDARY sources for your given project and can even be good for combing the occasional website for primary sources, there is absolutely nothing in the technology that can assemble the stuff necessary for a full article (bc you are pulling from openly available stuff so people in your field will have accessed this stuff before you, its not going to be new and pathbreaking primary sources) and two, while it can be helpful to let ai generate a first draft just to see your ideas on a page, you're going to have to make the AI iterate on that thing like a dozen times just for it to be kinda where you want it and even then you will need to spend days going through and editing and rewriting it bc its AI, the writing style will always be straight ass.

presumably they're putting in their own experimental data, people will try to use ai for shit like "here's our 20 measurments, make it into an article". but if it's bioinformatics.....who knows what the supposed real data even is lmao. ime bioinformatics people tend to be very a.i.-positive bc their work is about seeking meaning in huge volumes of information, and that's a process where a.i. produces results. and i guess if youre kind of a dumb guy, you'll start believing that if it can do that, it can do all the rest as well.
Oof. Yeah I'm a historian so honestly I feel a bit extraneous to the convo bc nobody ever even mentions us in AI discourse. Also I think a big part of using it in a halfway decent way is looking at it as a stupid computer that can fuck up and not like, getting so weirdly enamored by its ability to phrase stuff in a generic "smart" way like some people seem to.
And wait I just reread your thing and Im realizing this is STEM ppl and their weird hatred of writing essays, which like idk to paraphrase one guy "Claude is a great research assistant and a lousy writer." Like that's the last thing I would use it for lol. I had it doing some preliminary research on open archive sites and it kept going back to this concept of "labor-nuclear convergence" as the essence of the research and I had to be like no, whatever pattern you think you are recognizing I need you to shut the fuck up and do what I tell you.
