Better to have fewer friends all of whom are true to you, your values, and your boundaries than abundant faux friends who routinely fail to support you.

Be very wary of anybody who thinks the word "defensive" is a pejorative. There is nothing wrong with defending yourself, and most people who seem "overly defensive" are reacting to insufficient safety over time.
When people dislike you because you loudly and proudly defend your social justice values and personal boundaries, that means you are winning at keeping people who don't support your values and boundaries out of your life. Well done.
Why are you bending yourself so hard to be universally liked when you don't even like many of those you are trying to impress? Be yourself and attract people who like you for you.
