Truck drivers in Michigan have for years smashed into an undersized bridge called The Big Penny. Normal warning signs have not deterred drivers from wedging dozens of trucks into its hungry maw.

So they put eyes and teeth on the bridge, in part as a further deterrent.

It has not worked…

I love how my town did it:

This was iteration 1, BTW.

Now....the orange balls are attached to a detector with flashing signs and if you hit the balls (or even get close to it), the whole thing lights up.

Here is the upgraded version:

Note the wicked low clearance, 8 foot 7 inches.

One of these can-opener bridges even sells crash art, though they're out of stock currently. They also have a youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@11foot8plus8

Comment on this 11'8+8 video ( so named because the bridge was raised after channel went viral. Tracks/sewer are limiting factor.)

was reminded of that youtube channel that records footage of that bridge that scalps trucks today. one of the fascinating developments that's happened since i last heard about it is that, in one of their many attempts to stop the trucks from being can-opened, they installed a traffic light that detects when a vehicle that's over the allowed height is coming and turns red so the driver can stop and hopefully notice the signage all around that's screaming "YOUR VEHICLE IS OVERHEIGHT TURN AROUND" and avoid an accident. However as a result sometimes drivers see the light turning yellow and IMMEDIATELY start flooring it to avoid having to stop, ensuring that the roof of their truck just gets fucking annihilated instantly. Really beautiful stuff you should check it out

the comments have me in tears

It DOES have a sign. It turns on when it detects something too tall for the bridge. It even flashes. And the traffic lights will go red to get people to stop when it detects an over height vehicle so they read the signs. (note this lovely example where the lights are red, because the truck thought it was better than the lights)

every time I see this post I've forgotten how clearly signposted the canopener bridge is, and every time it hits me like a truck (hitting the canopener bridge and getting the top of its trailer ripped asunder)

Important update, out of curiosity I went to look at The Can Opener on google maps and discovered that they have since opened a THEMED FOOD TRUCK PARK RIGHT NEXT TO THE BRIDGE

Sit down and crack open a cold one and if you're lucky the bridge will crack open a cold one with you.

the webcam is also visible on street view

i love looking at old art and assuming "well obviously there's an imaginary element/artistic license; it didn't actually look like that" and then finding out shit like:

spoiler: camel trains absolutely looked like that. src

Good news! that horse species WAS just rounder than we're used to!

Here's Przewalski's Horse, the horse species that is most closely related to the horses in the cave paintings. Please note The Round:

My mane 6 redesigns in the FiM show style!! Been working on these for a while. I think my fave might be Rarity

These are definitely subject to change at some point but rn I think these are cute

we need to invent a way to explain how deep running and pervasive and subliminal racism and antiblackness is without immediately sounding like an insane conspiracy theorist

female characters are always lighter than male characters. strong characters are almost always dark. aggressive characters are almost always dark. peaceful and intelligent characters are almost always light. even amongst darker characters the lightest one is usually either the leader or the girls. dark is evil and light is good.

if you try to explain this to a white person they look at you like youre insane

briefly pursuing a career in animation radicalized me on this. So many stories from the industry about how you have to start with your character design as dark as possible, because INEVITABLY you'll get "notes" from higher-ups asking you to make them lighter.

In a class about making a pitch bible my teacher once role-played as a shitty executive with a classmate, pressing them in intentionally abrasive ways about why they made their characters diverse. He emphasized that we had to learn to defend these things, because the racism in the industry is extremely deliberate.

Ronald Wimberly's comic essay, Lighten Up, stays evergreen

Love it when you do a quiz and it’s obvious what the answers correlate to. U know what I mean. The quiz will be like… r u a mermaid or a vampire… and the questions are like

Do u like the ocean

2. It’s ok

i think if your kid is precociously good at an adult hobby like cooking or sewing or whatever and you try to monetize it by turning them into a three-year-old influencer you should be locked in a funhouse until you change your mind

I'm against capital punishment even in my tumblr posts #consistency
