remix five flutter speed is so confusing and weird because it’s functionally in half-tempo
this is easiest to see with the grasshoppers, as they bounce on eighth-notes in the minigame but whole notes in the remix.
but this also applies to the butterflies, which tend to be players’ main problem area. borrowing visuals from this person’s visual explanations of flutter speed and remix 5 (who has a lot of very good visualizations of groove minigames up to remix 5 thus far):
with the cue mirroring the main rhythm/melody, it’s pretty evident that the butterfly flaps in flutter speed are on dotted eight notes (0.75 beats, 3 sixteenth notes)
while in remix five, it’s even easier to see with this transcription that the flaps are on dotted quarter notes (1.5 beats, 3 eight notes)
so, the butterflies are essentially on the same rhythm in both the game and the remix, if you view remix 5 flutter speed in half-tempo. still, it might feel even more different because the butterflies are usually coming on the offbeat, potentially making it a bit confusing (especially with their constant onslaught and the weird rhythm created by dropping an eighth note between your input and the next cue)
but still there is nothing wrong with flutter speed in remix 5, it’s just manipulated in a weird way to both line up with the song’s melody, and to add challenge. there is rhyme and reason to remix 5 flutter speed and im tired of ppl saying there isn’t
also check out rano_079 on youtube their rh visualizations (which i used for this post) are great and probably have some insightful musical commentary too. i just don’t know for sure cuz i can’t read japanese
