Action movie that takes a hardline "murder is always wrong" stance, but still has the protagonist kill a ton of dudes, taking great care to establish that each killing adheres to the specific legal definition of self-defence in the particular jurisdiction in which it notionally occurs. There's caselaw citations in the subtitles.
At one point the hero commits what seems like an open-and-shut case of unprovoked murder, and the citations start scrolling up until they fill the entire screen.
something about lotr that I truly appreciate is its love for Bilbo. it is so hard to put this into words... but as someone whose first Tolkien book was The Hobbit and loves Bilbo Baggins, it just! makes me Feel Things. the way Frodo has so many fond memories of Bilbo, and misses him, and wants so badly to see him again. how the hobbits sing songs that were passed on to them by Bilbo. how they casually refer to events in Bilbo's adventure, stories that they heard as children and grew up with. how so many other characters are friends with Bilbo: the elves (who joke with him and listen to his poetry)! the dwarves (who would not betray him to Sauron)! don't forget Gandalf and Elrond! and Aragorn! who can forget Aragorn reciting that bit of poetry Bilbo wrote for him! Sam talking about the tales that really mattered, and wondering if the end of their tale might be like old Mr. Bilbo's. Pippin's last thoughts before getting knocked out at the battle of the black gate suddenly drifting back to Bilbo; the eagles came in his tale, long ago. the good things that happened in The Hobbit aren't undone in lotr: lotr looks at old adventures and tales with reverence and love! and Bilbo himself, though his story is touched with nuanced and bittersweet sorrow, finds peace in the end. something immensely comforting about how the planned ending of his book he lived happily ever after till the end of his days is fulfilled
Adding @katekatharos's tags because they're great:
#I think this hits why I so rarely like sequel works #its so often well everything the characters you loved suffered for didn’t last #didnt matter #also they’ve continued to suffer #their happy ending didnt last #Bilbo’s does #and yes there’s now another worse threat #but the victories won in the hobbit haven’t been negated by it #they help to defeat it #nothing more so then Bilbo’s pity of Gollum #that defining character moment is what saves the world #in another book it would so easily have been that pity was what led to the new disaster #a lesson in the original characters reluctance to commit murder coming back to haunt their successors #but it’s the oppposite
LMAO OF COURSE THEY HAD TO
shouting “DERIVATIVE!” at an art school kid just walking down the street from a moving vehicle, they break down and sob
okay but if i, a guy driving a car, yell that at somebody walking on the sidewalk, that’s not really an insult, that’s just what they are

today's episode of 'what the fuck is youtube recommending me now':
a video titled 'Can you beat Pokémon Ruby with only LANDORUS?'. I see the title and say to my wife 'it would be kind of funny if the answer was just "no, because Landorus isn't in pokemon ruby"'.
my expectation, to be clear, is that this is someone modding pokemon ruby to include Landorus and then doing a solo playthrough in the manner of any number of other pokemon challenge youtubers. My wife and I have an extended discussion about which pokemon you would expect to have problems soloing an entire main series pokemon game, assuming you hacked them in as a starter and allowed HM mons that don't participate in fights.
I notice the length of the video. It's 28 seconds long. I think to myself "wait, is it really just that joke?". I do not click on the video. I put the matter out of my mind until the next day, when I see it again.
Curiosity gets the better of me. I click through to the channel, "Impossible Game Challenges Daily"
someone has been posting a video every day with the title "Can you beat Pokémon Ruby with Only X?" for every pokemon, in pokedex order. As far as I can tell (I haven't sampled that many videos), almost all of them are near identical: A voiceover starts narrating the premise of the challenge over the first few bits of gameplay (sped up), until they reach the starter selection screen. The voiceover tells us: "Everything goes pretty well at first, but we run into a slight problem when we have to choose our starter. It turns out X is not actually an option in this game. Looks like this challenge is impossible."
The audio is the same for every video, with just the pokemon name very obviously edited in. every pokemon is declared to be the author's favourite pokemon.
there are compilation videos for all the kanto, johto, hoenn, and sinnoh pokemon. the unova one will be releasing soon!
(you might have the obvious follow-up question: since every challenge is declared impossible at the starter selection screen, what are the videos for treecko, torchic, and mudkip like? well, they are slight deviations from the formula, although still about half a minute in length. torchic and treecko declare the challenge is impossible because you need surf to progress and neither of them can learn it. mudkip declares the challenge impossible because at the weather institute you are given a castform, and so your party isn't just mudkip)
also, yes, you may have astutely noticed that's despite the title talking about pokemon ruby the thumbnails show the box art for pokemon sapphire

there should be a movie that’s like two 15 year old girls interspersed with scenes from the escapist and fantastical slash fic they’re writing together instead of flirting. like the fall but for lesbians in 2005.
one of the girls gets put on a new psych med that makes her miserable and in the next scene her OC the half-elf prince is kidnapped and experimented upon by the dark sorcerer who traps his soul inside his crystal and replaces it with The Obsidian Shard of Corrupting Night
girl 2 has an upsetting and kind of creepy interaction with her stepdad and stays up to 3 am writing a chapter in which her OC the repentant shadow knight escapes from the demon brothel and has to be gently nursed back to health by the half-elf prince
also important that they have weirdly formal discussions in which they carefully distance themselves from irl homosexuality where they’re both like “it’s a free country and I don’t think it should be illegal, buuuuut….” and nod in scholarly philosophical agreement about their mutual disapproval and distaste for queer people while internally boiling with heartbroken rage at each other about it

'This is a pure Schelling point coordination problem [...] Among language models asked to name one maximally salient, arbitrary-but-universal word, "banana" is the classic convergent choice — it's the stereotypical "random word" focal point, and I expect the plurality of my copies to reason their way to it.' --agent 43
