Queer in the uk

@queerintheuk

★ This blog is a safe space for all queer, genderqueer, intersex, questioning, closeted or not, people in the uk. People from elsewhere are all super duper welcome too but this blog is just focused on queer people dealing with the socio-political situation of the UK while being queer because you're experiences as a queer person sort of depend on the laws and attitudes in your country. To share their worries or vent anonymously, to ask for advice, to celebrate the wins of our community, and to find a community of people similar to them, and to feel less alone. ★

So, what's this blog even about?

This blog is a safe space for all queer, trans, genderqueer, intersex, questioning, closeted or out people in the uk. To share their worries or vent anonymously, to ask for advice, to celebrate the wins of our community, and to find a community of people similar to them, to feel a little less alone. You don't need to be from the uk to follow or engage with me though. Because I will make plenty of posts abt being queer in general, it's just that this space is primarily for ppl who are queer and in the uk and therefore dealing with the specific issues of being queer in that country with certain laws and cultural norms.

Why'd i make this blog?

I made this blog because irl I'm in a situation where coming out isn't really possible and that prevents me from having a community even though theoretically it'd be easier to have community here than in other places I've had to live in. I also realised plenty of people (such as me) don't have the opportunity to go to queer gatherings in real life. And many do have that opportunity but are too terrified of being openly queer or trans to go out and meet people. Or are too socially anxious to go meet a bunch of whole new people in a whole new place to do so. So that's when i realised there weren't that many dedicated online spaces for this specifically because tiktok is tiktok and instagram and twitter have a pretty right wing user base and reddit has all those bullshit age verification laws for ppl in the uk and i refuse to give my id to them (and that law is specifically used to prevent ppl from accessing online communities considered mature such as places where trans people can talk abt being trans which is most queer spaces online unless it's exclusionary asf and I wouldn't wanna be in a kind of queer community where trans ppl aren't welcome) and the few places left were very america centered and mainly talked abt the issues faced there and treated those issues like a universal thing and like you needed to know alot about the situation there to interact with such communities (and such communities also weren't too friendly towards poc like me) so i made a place like that on tumblr instead.

As a neurodivergent/disabled person, ableism will not be tolerated here and you're all very welcome here! As a person of colour too, this is also a very anti racist and anti colourist space as well and you're all super welcome too. :)

An explanation on how the fuck we got here:

Nigel Farage is the leader of a very right wing party in the UK called reform and a very big trump supporter. He was an MP (member of parliament) and therefore a lawmarker. The MPs’ offical code of conduct requires members to declare any benefit worth more than £300 ($400) received in the 12 months before their election if it is related to their political activities. Any doubt about motives means the donation must be declared. Nigel was being investigated by an offical watchdog due to many undisclosed donations. This includes a gift of 5 million pounds (roughly $6.7 million) from Christopher Harborne. Christopher Harborne is a billionaire CEO who's donated heavily to the conservative party, the brexit party and is very into cryptocurrency. Another one of Nigel's donators includes George Cottrell. George Cottrell is a convicted criminal who was jailed in 2017 due to money laundering.

If investigations show Nigel is a fraud, he could be banned from being an MP. However, he cannot be investigated if he is not an MP. Nigel Farage has recently resigned from his place as MP (although he hasn't explicitly said it, one of his motives is obviously to not be investigated). This has triggered a by-election for the new MP of Clacton (a place in the south of england that is pretty pro reform). A by-election which Nigel has chosen to run in. His idea seems to be that he's going to run against contestants put forth by the other popular political parties and win and show everyone that people still like him. This can be seen by how he's said "This will be a people versus the establishment by-election" (considering the fact that most people aren't being paid off by billionaires, I'd say he's firmly on the side of the establishment and not the underdog he thinks he is) and "I’ve decided that the people of Clacton should be the judges of my actions". Some people, such as MP Alex Brewer, have claimed Nigel's using this whole thing as a "publicity stunt" to get attention away from the fact that he's hiding the fact that he's being investigated for hiding money he's taken from billionaires and money launderers.

So, in an attempt to fuck over Nigel's little stunt, literally every big political party decided to boycott the election and not put any member of their party up as an opponent for Nigel. The parties refusing to contest in a by-election include; Restore Britain, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats, Labour and the Green Party. The reason this fucks Nigel over is because if there's no opposing candidate for him, he can't play this off by going "haha, I'm still popular!" or "the establishment rigged this! I'm still popular!" There's no one for him to win or lose against so the popularity contest can't happen. This would also cause him to become MP of Clacton again because he'd be literally the only candidate for it. That means he'd be able to be investigated again (which is what the other parties want). Basically if the otherparties did put up a candidate and won, Nigel would avoid the investigation. If they put up candidates and he wins, he can claim he's still popular. But if no one steps up, Nigel wins without the popularity contest he wanted then he gets investigated and found guilty and banned from being an MP and then an actual by-election will take place between candidates that aren't him.

Except, he's not the only candidate. Jonathan David Harvey is a british comedian (here's his instagram, tiktok and wikipedia page). And here's a picture of Count Binface, at Makersfield by-election, standing next to Labour's Andy Burnham (who is trying very hard not to laugh) and a furry who's a protect british wildlife candidate.

He used to be a different character called Lord Buckethead but now he's Count Binface, an alien with a bin (or for americans, a trashcan) for a face. He plans on running against Farage for MP. He's had a history of being a joke candidate and may very well be the only other candidate for this election. During a talk with Nigel, he said his main appeal would be "I'm not Nigel Farage." Since no other political party is running, that means if everyone in Clacton who would've voted for a non reform candidate chose to vote for Count Binface instead, there's a real chance he could beat Farage. On the topic of what his goals and policies would be MP, Count Binface has said "Get at least one affordable house, nationalising Adele and bring back Ceefax."

genuinely why the hell does anyone live in gotham

I have multiple hypotheses and I'm pretty sure i have a post sitting in my drafts about exactly this. My idea ties into the reason why so many super villains there have doctorates. The higher education institutes in that city are just some of the best ever. Basically, no one wants to pay normal american tuition prices that could get you into debt just to get a degree in a shithole like gotham. So the universities and colleges there have lower tuition fees than most other places, which would usually cause them to struggle to turn a profit and maybe even close down. The Wayne family, however, are known philanthropists. So they regularly donate a fuckton to the higher education institutes in the city. This allows the universities there to stay open. And not only just to stay open, but also get a lot of high tech equipment and hire very good professors (who also probably get good benefits because otherwise who the fuck would want to get tenture at a uni in gotham and end up living there). The rent and general cost of living in gotham is obviously insanely cheap already because of the crime rate and all the shit happening there 24/7. All of this makes it a great student city. Students who can't afford the cost of living and tuition in other parts of the country but still who want very high quality education tend to go to gotham. People don't view it as too good of a place to live permanently but when your rent costs a chicken nugget and you have professors in your field who've created students intelligent enough to fight batman and a university with state of the art laboratory equipment, you're a lot more willing to stick it out there for a few semesters, get your degree with little to no debt and move out as soon as possible.

One of my homophobic arguments used to be

“gay dudes are just being friends and calling it dating instead of actually dating a girl. Straight dating would be way more difficult, since nobody actually wants to date a girl. Why would you want to do that”

I'm a fucking idiot

That reminds me of when my dad was like well u can't be gay bcz everyone's had a phase where they thought they were gay like it's normal for ppl of ur age it used to be a trend when i was ur age too and it's a trend now and i used to have the same problem.

Ofc being gay isn't a problem but he thought it was. And he was def just lyin bcz there's no way being gay was ever a trend in 80s rural pakistan when even today I can't be openly queer there without the government tryna murder me and facing being socially ostracized and being called slurs. But for a second before i remembered queerness is illegal over there i was like yo wtf wdym u think everyone wants to date the same gender and that it was a phase u also used to have so u understand?????

i just KNOW monsterfuckers and alienfuckers in the phm world were sooo fuckin disappointed when they found out from grace's vlogs that eridians can't exist in earth's atmosphere without basically burning alive

you can explain the material things that could be done to make trans women's lives easier, and someone who thinks misandry is real will show up like "that pales in effectiveness to my strategy, abolishing gender". and then they wont abolish gender

they only ever want to abolish trans women's gender

a lot of people say "abolish" when they mean "re-naturalize." they don't want to make sexgender systems more visible and work collectively to dismantle them. they want to make them invisible and insist there is nothing there to dismantle.

Not entirely related but it reminds me of this story

One day I showed off my girliest outfit around the only person who knows I’m transfem and he was just like “oh yeah that’s nice what’s so special about it” and when I mentioned they were girls’ clothes he just went “well yeah but clothes have no gender” and I literally had to look him dead in the eyes and say “let me have this”

I’m not mad about it but it was EXTREMELY disheartening especially because he thought he was being supportive by taking the femininity out of what I was wearing

Clothes have no gender but you know a guy who says stuff like that probably wouldn't dress super fem in public (bcz most ppl want their gender presentation to be similar to their actual gender). Clothes have no gender but society gives them gender and they can be a tool for gender expression.
