(chugs the rest of my can of monster) ok so like. full disclosure i’m not a scholar on any of this aside from the character analysis. but like. unless you’re engaging in specific styles of bdsm relationship, “daddy” and “dom” are bedroom roles. they’re part of the performance of bdsm. and ideally, whoever is taking on one or both of those roles should be enthusiastic about it, whether it’s something they are ambivalent about but willing to do in order to fulfill their partner, or something they derive active pleasure from. there are characters who could fall into either of those categories, depending on their partner, and characters who would be uncomfortable with taking on those roles regardless.
and “daddy” and “dom” are also not synonymous. “daddy” is a particular type of dom, one that entails a guiding and often nurturing role, a particular style of mature authority, and security/protection for the sub. it can often involve ageplay but it can also just denote that the daddy has enough experience that they can take care of their sub. even where brat taming or punishment are involved, it’s fundamental that there are elements of caretaking and guidance from a position of authority. there are other styles of domination that are more focused on emulating danger or making the sub feel unsafe. it’s a rectangle-square situation, not everyone who is a dom is a daddy/mommy dom. and some people who like this style of domming still wouldn’t want to be called daddy/mommy for whatever reason.
so, like, all of that is to say. some characters would dom in a different style (see: marazhai), don’t have the confidence to be a daddy dom (see: lucanis), wouldn’t like being called “daddy” (see: dorian), or wouldn’t feel comfortable domming at all, and that much can be figured out via character analysis. and a character can be interpreted multiple ways, there’s no “right” answer necessarily, just have some way to back it up if you’re trying to be in-character. someone who’s a control freak might be read as a dom by some or a person who needs to submit and let go of control by others. or even by the same fan. switching and fluidity exist.
it also depends on the dynamic with their partner(s)! there are characters who i don’t think are doms by nature or who i don’t think would exclusively dom, but they’d be willing to or enthusiastic about it with the right person, in the right time or place, and that goes for daddy domming specifically too. idk i think it depends.
also because there are more notes on that post now (op is right i agree with them) and i scrolled through them realizing i forgot to finish this post. there are not two sexual roles to choose between. a character does not have to be either “daddy dom” or “submissive and whimpering on his knees begging for it” please for the love of god people can have sex that isn’t D/s it’s how most people have sex D/s is a specific kink that many people do not have oh my god. submission is also a specific sexual preference. someone can be neither dominant nor submissive. someone can be a switch. someone can have no interest in D/s whatsoever. there are so many ways to dominate and submit that are different from those two stereotypes. you are doing the exact same thing of shoving a character into a cardboard cutout sexual role without further thought that the people making astarion a daddy dom are doing. you are doing uke/seme shit again or whatever. stop.
