Jules Tavernier, born in Paris, moved to London after the Franco-Prussian War, then resettled in the United States for the remainder of his life. He spent a period in San Francisco, where he famously helped to entertain a visiting Oscar Wilde, then moved to Honolulu, where he became affiliated with the Hawai'ian "Volcano School" of painting. A lifelong hard drinker, he died of a heart attack, perhaps alcohol-related, at age 45.

This 15th-century French stone figure of Saint Barbara holds the tower she was kept in with one hand, while her other hand holds a book. The book is held slightly open by the insertion of one of her fingers between the carved pages. The tower includes windows and a door with a keyhole and metal hinges.
