I think that part of what irks me about AI being used even for "small" stuff like meme graphics (aside from all the larger problems obviously) is like.... the time spent on it was part of the humor. "this is a silly inconsequential joke but I had to stop everything and spend 5 minutes making it" was, at least for me, part of the joke. Someone really took time out of their day to make me look at something silly they took time out of their day to make. Now it's like someone took time out of my day to make me look at something no one even made. Stop wasting my time if you aren't wasting yours too.
An old post of yours just crossed my dash about commenting when rereading and it reminded me that I must have read your how to train your dragon crossover about five times already and I should do that again, though it's been years since I was into teenwolf stuff in general. Some fics are just too good to leave behind when you leave a fandom.
I'm afraid that as I download fics I like and then tend to read the downloaded version I'm very bad at going back and commenting.

Okay. For my money, the entire thesis of Chris Nolan’s 2026 film The Odyssey is that society chokes and sputters and dies when we abuse, ignore, or violate social norms like the laws of hospitality. That is not really what The Odyssey (the book/poem) is about, but I can clearly see why in the horror that is the 2020s, someone could read The Odyssey and go oh my god that’s a lot of bad dropping in. That’s a lot of bad visits. That’s a clear vision of how the loss of social norms and cohesion fucks you up and how war, literal, brutal war, is a terrible wound that destroys your humanity and your understanding of what civilization and society is. I don’t know that the iteration of Greek society that ultimately birthed the poem would agree with Nolan’s take, but I think this movie is quite ideologically coherent, that Nolan knew exactly what he was trying to say with each and every adaptational change, and I think he wasn’t nuts for using one of the most famous classical western civilization works as a way to make that argument.

I'm so glad they got Ted Chiang -- a wonderful writer of science fiction and thinker about technology, in my opinion -- to write this essay. My favorite line was this:

@petals42 does not like pineapple on pizza, and this is a sad fact that was initially a roadblock to the depths of our friendship. Which was not initiated through hazing. This is a lie. Do not believe Petals. But all jokes aside, I’m super, super glad that we became friends. I am in love with just about everything she writes, and her omgcp headcanons have been killing me, lately. But also Petals is just really, really chill and easy to talk to, and she’s a pretty great person to talk to when fandom is getting to be Too Much.
I would like to update this and say that I do actually now like pineapple on pizza so I was wrong on that front.

there’s a reason for this.
My personal theory is that if Media is REALLY good, there isn't really... space, if you will for fans to add or change perspectives on it. Too dense, too complete. Like how coral won't grow on plastic because it's too smooth
Whereas some half-baked hot garbage has got ALL KINDS of plot holes, incomplete characterization, warped timelines, missing worldbuilding and other Spaces for fans to colonize, like coral growing on a sunken battleship.
And then if a series just sucks too much, it's not fun to interact with at all, and people won't fandomize it because it's toxic. Like how coral won't grow on sunken piles of burnt-out tires.
I call this the Fandom Barrier-Reef Theory.
With both Merlin and The Untamed I knew the fanfic was going to be amazing because there were so many places canon could have been/gone better. The only way I suffered through the last season of Merlin was reminding myself that the fanfic was gonna be great. It was.
