Of all the things that frustrate me about myself, my ability to go from zero to bent out of shape in an instant has to be the worst.

Some folks are surprised when they learn this about me since I’m pretty good at keeping myself put together, but when I do get upset, I get upset hard.  Like, I can’t hide it at all.

Sourpuss face for hours, basically non responsive, going through motions that are human in nature but there’s nothing behind my eyes; I become a walking, talking husk running on autopilot while there’s an internal Alex screaming at the top of her lungs who’s abandoned the cockpit.

And it’s always the dumbest things that get me spiraling.  Like, a Vrbo cancelled, and I was instantly panicking.  There have been times in my life where I’ve worked back to back to back to back twenty hour days, and minus a couple hysterically crying the bathroom moments during them, I’d brush myself off after my cry and hit the floor again, cameras in hand, smiling and doing my job.

I don’t know why certain things send me off the edge.

I’m glad that I’m able to identify when I’m in those moods; it’s an important part of the process for me as I work on handling them better.  Fortunately, I had someone recently give me a shining example on how to do just that.

Someone I hung out with a few weeks ago had a frustrating customer service experience of their own, and after having had witnessed this person be an absolute wild tornado of a human being for days (in the best way), I was stunned to see them suddenly calm, collected, and even apologetic on the phone as they worked through their issue.

The very same thing would have made me instantly shut down, I couldn’t believe it.  It was a great example of just how far I have to go in my own development.

No matter how much nonsense I have going on with trans issues, I am a person first and a trans person second, working on myself means more than just transitioning.

The person in question, by the way, knows this strip is getting made, but I’m unaware of if they’d be cool with me naming them in the story here.  You know who you are, so first off, thank you for being an excellent role model, and second, feel free to take the credit and make yourself known if you want to!

OK friends, it’s time to explain some basic shit. Transphobia functions by violently coercing people who deviate from their agab back into their agab. Indeed, this seems to explain all of the oppression towards transmascs. Their masculinity is violently denied, and they are forced back into patriarchal womanhood. It’s really bad.

However, something weird happens when you apply this definition to the oppression of transfems. You certainly see a violent denial of their womanhood and femininity, but that’s not all you see. Transfems are also routinely forced to diminish their opinions, spoken over, treated as hysterical, paid less than men (even trans men), forced to conform to an extreme feminine ideal, forced to be sexually available to men, fetishized, raped, etc. In other words transfems appear to also experience misogyny, something we would not expect given that transphobia denies their womanhood. To make matters worse, these two forces intersect in new and terrible ways that produce outcomes worse than either would alone. This is called transmisogyny. To give a classic example, there are a lot of straight men out there who sexualize and objectify trans women (because of misogyny), however doing so makes them feel “gay” or emasculated (because of transphobia) and so they develop a violent hatred of trans women specifically (transmisogyny).

It is very confusing then, when a bunch of people create a word "transandrophobia" to refer to the oppression faced by transmascs in analogy with how transmisogyny is a word that refers to the oppression of transfems. Not only is it confusing, because transmisogyny refers not to the oppression of transfems in general, but instead to the specific intersectional force targeting them. It's also confusing because if we are to take this analogy seriously, we should conclude that there is some systemic force oppressing men for being men, which, and this should really go without asking, there isn't. I do not and will not deny that transmascs face a horrible amount of transphobia, and in fact I will go so far as to agree that they experience a unique and specific sort of transphobia to being trans men, because of course violent denial of masculinity is going to function differently than violent denial of femininity. But it is just transphobia. It's not "transandrophobia" or "transmisandry" or anything of that sort, and it is not at all equivalent to transmisogyny.

It's actually kind of ridiculous how trans women have been pushed out of transmisogyny, like the mythical flawlessly passing perfectly feminine femboy who has to tell the audience stand in flirting with him "Actually I'm a guy" is just the same transmisogynistic joke since the fucking nineties of someone flirting with a woman and then suddenly noticing they're trans except now in a progressive turn of events, there are no more trans women! To prevent transphobia we have erased trans women while keeping the exact same jokes used against them for decades! We hope to make a much more sensitive and respectful place without trans women for everyone!

This image suddenly doesn't feel like it aged so well:

You said this better than I did.

Shen coukd save this. All the comic would need is to have a bit near the end where the "femboy" learns about trans women and has that "oh..." moment so many of us had. Like she literally didn't know trans women existed and transition was an option (not far fetched. That was literally me. I didn't learn about trans women until I was 25.) Then she asserts that she is a woman. The twerf would need to also have a reconing where she realizes how evil her ideology is.

Like, Shen could do that and it would save this whole horrible thing. But will Shen do it? I don't have a lotta hope...

Yeah I haven’t been getting great vibes from the recent updates in this saga but I’ll try and give the benefit of the doubt and see how it ends :/

i am beginning to realize that when i say “im bored” people understand that as “i have nothing to do and i need something to do”. and what i actually mean is “holy shit i am incapable of doing anything even though i have lots of things i can do and want to do and i feel like the world is mildly grey and soul sucking and my brain is numb”

which now that i’m typing it out that sounds like executive dysfunction

to be precise, discord servers perfectly recreate the experience of being surrounded by people who aren't your friends but you're lonely enough that you're desperate for their attention and then saying something that you really hope is funny and/or entertaining because it was to you but instead all you get is silence and a few weird looks but it's not high school anymore it's the rest of your life forever

God, transmisogyny really is just super misogyny, isn't it? You have to be freely sexually available to men and if you aren't your AGP. But also, if you are sexually available then you're a trap whore who lures in and tricks men. Any harmful beauty standards have an extra implicit threat of violence attached to them, because if you are not the perfect feminine ideal of a woman you must be a perverted male who it is acceptable to beat rape and murder. You must diminish your own opinions and defer to others. Failing to do so not only incurs the typical penalties faced by an assertive woman, but comes with the explanation that you are simply acting on your "inherent male aggression." God forbid you fail to defer to a cis woman or even just disagree with her because then you are "speaking over women due to your internalized misogyny born out of your male socialization". You are more likely to be abused and sexually assaulted, but in fact any attempt to get comeuppance or even simply talk about your story is met not only with the typical victim blaming statements about how it's really your fault for being abused, but also with musings that perhaps you were really the abuser (you're probably an abuser because you're a man male socialized).

Transfemme Spidey where she transitions in costume first, debuting as "Your friendly neighborhood Spiderwoman". It's NYC so this is mostly received either positively or without much notice. New Yorker don't really give a damn who they gotta fight if it's a fight.

Jonah remains oddly silent on the issue.

Parker, however, eventually works up the need to transition in her civvy life and comes out at work as Emily. The Bugle crew are happy and supportive, but she gets called into Jameson's office.

"Parker."

"Sir?”

"This is because of her, isn't it?"

"'Her'?"

"The Spider! This transition thing you're doing, it's because of her, isn't it? I know you're close; this is her doing, isn't it?”

"Well, sir, I–”

"Whatever. I'm... Grateful to her."

"... Sir?"

"Parker, you've been a miserable worm since I met you. I've seen you smile more this week than in the past five years put together. So... Tell her I appreciate that she gave you the courage."

Emily's eyes water. "Yes, sir."

"But if you tell anyone else, you're fired! Now get out there and get me better photos! Out!"

There are a surprising number of tr*ns*ndr*ph*b*a advocates who will concede that transmisogyny is a more severe oppression, but still insist that they just want a word to describe the oppression they face, even if it is lesser. If they are told "your oppression is called transphobia" they generally get frustrated, because they think we're not acknowledging all the shit they have to deal with. I think there's an underlying problem here, that they simply don't understand what we mean by "transphobia".

I think a lot of them would define "transphobia" as something like "the belief that your gender is your AGAB", or "the denial that you are the gender you say you are", i.e. primarily misgendering, and everything that follows from misgendering like bathroom bans. But they have observed that they are not merely misgendered: masculine gender presentation in those assigned female is actively punished by society, which will go out of its way to make them revert to a feminine gender presentation. To them that's not just transphobia, because they are not just being misgendered as cis women, but actually being treated worse than cis women. Thus: tr*ns*ndr*ph*b*a, a hatred of masculinity in those who were assigned female.

The only problem is, that is not how we would define "transphobia". Transphobia is not simply a truth claim about what your gender is, but rather a moral claim about what it ought to be: it's the belief that your gender presentation should not deviate from your AGAB. It's the belief in birth assignment as a social contract that is violated by gender nonconformity and totally torn up by transition. Transphobia is a force that punishes gender deviance in the hope of preventing it.

Any of the classic examples of tr*ns*ndr*ph*b*a, such as being denied access to medical transition on the basis that it will "ruin your pretty female body", are straightforwardly transphobia. It's not about masculinity being hated specifically, masculinity is hated for you, femininity is hated for me, that's just what transphobia means.

The reason we needed a word for "transmisogyny" is because the kinds of punishments transphobia doles out to transfems end up being significantly harsher than those it gives to transmascs, and that word is simply the name given to that gulf in our experiences. "Transmisogyny" is the observation that transphobia harms us more than it harms you, it cannot coexist with tr*ns*ndr*ph*b*a because its whole reason for existence is that gulf. We can't both be treated worse by transphobia than each other.

It seems to me that tr*ns*ndr*ph*b*a advocates often regard "transphobia" as a fairly minor oppression, essentially just misgendering, on top of which sit two other much bigger oppressions, the hatred of femininity in those assigned male, and the hatred of masculinity in those assigned female. This seems a natural taxonomy to them. The idea that all three of these things are actually the same thing is not one that they recognise, unless as an umbrella term with these constituent parts as separate oppressions beneath it.

So, is there actually any reason to choose the transfeminist framing over the tr*ns*ndr*ph*b*a advocates' framing? I think there is, for two reasons:

  1. Defining transphobia as essentially a belief that gender = AGAB is a really bad definition, because it's a belief that no one actually holds. When people misgender trans women as "men" they do not really believe we are men (which is obvious when you look at how they treat us), they are calling us that as a punishment, not as a genuinely-held belief. To them we are not men but T-slurs. Transphobia is far better understood as a punishment for breaking a social contract, a whole host of different ways of pressuring us to conform to our AGAB, or if that is not possible, eliminating us.
  2. Having a specific oppression name for the fact that masculinity is hated in those assigned female is a framing that focuses attention in the wrong place imo. It is not about masculinity specifically, it is about gender deviance generally. The logic of why transphobia is more severe against transfems (transmisogyny) is that masculinity is actually generally considered superior to femininity. Having an oppression that can be characterised as "hatred of masculinity" comes across as reactionary, since it is a reversal of what is globally true. This is why the tr*ns*ndr*ph*b*a movement can so easily become a broader men's rights movement, because the founding principle of it is a supposed societal hatred of masculinity, when what society is actually hating is gender deviance, and in fact, if you have to be gender deviant, society would much rather you be masculine.

I'm sure people will say I'm giving tr*ns*ndr*ph*b*a advocates too much benefit-of-the-doubt here. I know that a lot of them simply do hold the reactionary belief that masculinity is hated by society, and especially in queer or progressive groups, a belief that is a total inversion of what the world is actually like. And I recognise a lot of thought patterns in common between tr*ns*ndr*ph*b*a advocates and the men's rights advocates of a decade ago. But I think it's still important to try to drill down into the philosophical differences between us, because I know there are some of them who see themselves as supporters of transfeminism, and are frustrated with what they see as our refusal to acknowledge their suffering, a frustration that is ultimately based simply in a misunderstanding of how we define things.

parents will rlly be like sorry for ruining ur childhood but you were a child so it doesnt matter anymore right

I need to keep an indecisive little thing as a pet.

It doesn’t know what to wear? I’ll dress you up.

It’s scared of going outside? I’ll tether your wrist to my belt, so you won’t lose me.

It can’t sleep at night? I’ll invite you into my bed and caress you all night, lulling you into a peaceful slumber with your head against my chest.

It won’t have to worry, it won’t have to make decisions, it won’t even have to think. Just be a good pet.

Me to my parents: “Rocky Horror Picture Show is horribly transphobic”

“Well it wasn’t back then.”
