actually while i’ve still got this soapbox stuck to my shoe i also wanna say i think culturally we gotta start conceptualizing physical fitness as a productive hobby rather than an obligation

it’s sort of like clothes. there’s a baseline level of involvement with clothing necessary to stay safe from the elements and participate in society. having a variety of different clothing isn’t *strictly* necessary but pretty tangibly helpful. knowing how to do some minor mending and tailoring is nice. once you get into sewing your own clothes, you’re in hobby territory. if you’re making your own textiles from scratch, that is not only definitely a hobby but not something you can expect other people to want to do

the sort of nonsense fitness influencers get up to is sort of like people showing off their homemade silkworm farm and then pointing at everyone else and going “what’s YOUR excuse for wearing a TSHIRT from the STORE???” and actually nvm that would be fucking hilarious. god i wish that was an actual thing can you imagine

that’s what i’m talking about!!!!!

it's such bs that the whole guilt-ridden stoic self-sacrificing martyr thing doesn't work outside of fiction. repressing all your emotions and neglecting your physical wellbeing should make you god's most tragically beautiful morally unassailable little soldier of righteousness but all it does is give you bad skin and gastrointestinal problems

like what do you MEAN the number 1 sexiest character trait of all time is just kind of offputting and bad for you in real life. next you'll tell me smoking has consequences other than looking like a mysterious badass

From "How to Respond to Criticism" by Daniel Laverty:

Run into a cave and break your ankle so that people have to come find you and they see you lying at the bottom of this beautiful cave and maybe there’s a waterfall and the light from the crystals makes you look really beautiful and they say “Are you okay?” and you say “I think so” and they say “oh my God have you been here alone this whole time with a broken ankle” and you say “it’s okay” and they say “you’re so brave” and you are brave and you look so beautiful surrounded by cave crystals and everyone stands over you and says “oh wow” and “you poor beautiful thing” and “I’m so sorry we let you run into the cave but I’m so glad we found you” and let them carry you home and promise to be your best friends forever and that everything’s their fault and also they named the cave after you and you’re prettier than all of your enemies and your enemies all died of jealousy while you were in the cave.

Anonymous asked:

give me the 1200 calorie rant

ok first of all anon ty for sensing my desire to rant about this through that one tag alone you're a real one for that

anyway SO one thing about the 1200cal/day recommendation for women is afaik it's generally presented as Dieting Calories, aka it's the *lowest* they're supposed to go, but not always. it's sometimes thrown out as a decent maintenance intake for 'short sedentary women', and while Yes there are outliers in any population and people have different needs etc. i feel like 'short' is, uh, underselling it a bit

^this is the tallest i could make a hypothetical completely sedentary woman with a Technically healthy BMI (18.6, which is Really pushing 'clinically underweight') and have her energy needs be anywhere near as low as 1200. four feet ten inches tall.

for some context:

(also, as far as i can tell, dwarfism tends to skew BMI high anyway, meaning this hypothetical person i invented for this tdee calculator is still almost definitely underweight for her height)

okay, so what about as a temporary deficit then?

STILL A STUPID NUMBER. remember, this figure is thrown out as advice to *women in general*. i'm from the US, the average woman here weighs 170lbs. current recommendations for daily protein intake are around .8g per pound of bodyweight

do you know how hard it is to get HALF your daily calories from protein? and honestly, eating 'enough' protein isn't nearly as important as exercise when it comes to maintaining muscle mass and bone density, but guess what exercise does? IT USES ENERGY

moderate exercise puts the Average Woman in a caloric deficit of OVER A THOUSAND calories per day. even light activity makes it ballpark 1k. i don't care what kind of exercise you're doing, you're definitely losing lean mass on that kind of intake

now of course theoretically, somewhere on the spectrum between the Average American (active) and dwarf lady who does fuck all, there is a woman for whom 1200 is a safe enough temporary daily intake to maintain for a few weeks with no ill effects. i'm sure she'll find this post somehow and tell me about it. my point is not that she does not exist, but that her situation is 1) fairly uncommon 2) difficult to ascertain without medical supervision and 3) FREQUENTLY IMPOSED UPON WOMEN WHO ARE NOT HER BY THE VERY MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS NECESSARY FOR SAID SUPERVISION FOR SOME REASON.

and this is all, for argument's sake, 'by the book' stuff. these online calculators are just using averages, and they can be off by a lot (if i plug all my stats in the maintenance number it gives me is at least 300kcal too low). i'm not even touching on the issues with BMI as a metric, the weird shit food restriction does to your head (that's like a whole other rant honestly), the way our healthcare system is inadequate down to its bones at giving patients any resources at All to help them achieve the 'health' standards it holds them to, etc. we have multiple consecutive generations of people atp convinced, deep down, that less food is ALWAYS healthier, better, more disciplined, more Good to a degree that makes dangerous levels of restriction feel like 'playing it safe' compared to eating the amount they actually need

if we're going to make overtures to Health and Wellbeing we have GOT to start prioritizing things like mental health and bone density and muscle mass before some population-level-stats ass idea of the Correct Weight to Be. ESPECIALLY in women and especially ESPECIALLY in women over 30, who are the primary group at risk of sarcopenia and osteopenia and also the most likely to be told to eat 1200 calories a day by their doctor

gotta admit despite having no interest whatsoever in watching heated rivalry i’ve become slightly addicted to watching compilations of hudson williams saying deranged shit in interviews. and it’s extra funny bc they’re all called ‘hudson having no media training’ or something like no media training my ASS that man is playing the entire internet like a fiddle. that man is tap dancing on the line between vulgar and unacceptable with a level of precision career comedians rarely manage to master. if he’s ‘not media trained’ it’s because there was nothing left to teach him

kinda baffled by the handful of people blorbo tagging this post. are you saying they fit the mentioned character archetype and completely ignoring the rest of the post? are you saying the character would also believe this? are you saying they’re portrayed as suffering realistic consequences? that they aren’t but they should be? what does it Mean

MAY YOUR DAY BE YAOIFUL ON THIS YAOI DAY EVERYONE 🥳🎉👨‍❤️‍💋‍👨💞

HAPPY YAOI DAY AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO EVERY HORSE IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE 🐴🦄🐎🎉🎂

Hey. Heyhey. Do me a favor real quick.

If you don't already know you have issues doing so, squat down real quick. Bend your knees all the way and touch the floor. Just make sure you can do it. Okay? For me? And then stand up all the way and make sure you can balance on one foot.

Like. You don't need to blow it into some huge thing. Just. Make sure all your bits and peices still work the way you think they do.

Can you turn your head to look behind you without twisting your shoulders? What about standing on your toes? If you sit down on the floor can you get back up without using your hands?

If there was ever a tumblr post worth sending to your mom, it's this one.

Just saying, bodies are a use it or lose it kinda thing.

okay so every time I see this post crop back up in queues and notifications I end up thinking about it. Because I made the post and even I'm still doing the thing where I read the post about maintaining range of motion in my delicate meatsuit and I nod and hmm and think yeah that's a good idea and then dont move from where I'm curled up shrimp style staring at the nightmare rectangle.

So like. Thinking real hard about moving doesn't count as moving. Major bummer. Anyways. Joints.
