The intense cold of Smeerensburg managed to penetrate the rich fabric of your clothes until it reached your skin.
A warm sigh came out of your lips but when it slid from your somewhat chapped lips due to the cold itself, transformed as if it were steam.
Jesper was sit beside you, unable to hold your gaze, after all, because of him you were dragged into his punishment.
The words of your father still echoed in your mind telling you to accompany your spoiled younger brother, sometimes it frustrated you to remember that your father was strict and firmer with you than Jesper. Other old memories came like flashbacks, his words "You will be the heir to all this", "Check that everything is going well", "See if your brother is doing his training" you sighed again, life there was exhausting but you couldn't deny that you missed it and at any moment the opportunity will present to you, you'll take it without doubt.
"Hey" you had no reaction. "Hey, i know you're angry with me but it's not my fault-" "that it's not your fault?"
You turned your head abruptly in the direction of Jesper, who was shivering from the intense cold.
"If only you had done things right, I wouldn't be here." you could see from the corner of your vision field how the boatman watched the little discussion with amusement. "Then why did you come?" The blonde said defiantly. "Did I had a choice?" You were now looking away from Jesper, crossing your arms.
You were just hoping to get to the damn island.
You had arrived at the island. The houses with pointed architecture, the gloom of the place made you swallow hard. The grip of your brother's hand made you frown, you shook your arm, trying to get rid of his grab.
The fancy boots you were wearing left marks on the snow-covered sidewalk, funny glances from the boatman made your poor mood start to wear off.
"So, Sir..." You addressed him politely. "Mogens, Miss" His playful tone made you start to consider taking his boat and leaving but your father would definitely scold you and more for leaving his son stranded on the island.
You took air, a really cold air.
"What is that bell-" And the grip Jesper had on your arm was quickly removed as he babbled on about why there was no one to greet him.
"And really there is no one? or-" "Or maybe we are not as relevant, not as important as at home, you dumb" You cut off his speech as you grabbed your purse, the path you took was uncertain and all you could hear was Jesper's screams calling you.
The soft sound of the soles of your boots echoed in the atmosphere, as if it were one of those horror novels you read in the big library of your home, oh your home. The sight of the structures of the houses and shops made the cold much more overwhelming. Your numb fingers played with the small ring that was on your finger previously in the boat, it was just as cold as your necklace.
And just as cold as that felt when his hand took yours.
Your thoughts were consuming you until the sound of a bell jingling could be heard from afar, your head turned in its direction until the sounds of hurried footsteps and clashing blades made your body shudder, you turned back to the front seeing how a horde of citizens approached angry and with weapons in hand, your legs trembling from the cold and the approaching battalion managed to react to run on another path.
Moving through alleys and dodging people on your way to confrontations, the little ring slipped from your fingers, rolling up to a run-down school.
"No!" The little exclamation spilled through your teeth as you chased the ring.
The ring kept rolling until it entered the school, as you entered the wood creaked. You quickly grabbed the ring that had gotten stuck in a barrel but your sense of smell made your nerves to be on alert and feel your stomach getting bad, the feeling of puke was stuck in your throat.
As you looked up you opened your eyes in a mixture of surprise and disgust, there were raw fish hanging from where drawings were supposed to be, fish in barrels and the strong smell... god, you want to get out there as fast as you can!
Holding air in your lungs, you put the ring back in your finger but, when you were about to get out, a hoarse female voice appeared.
"Hi, want something?" you turned to her with an awkward smile, something that makes you different to Jesper was that you were a little bit more reserved than him. You opened your lips slightly, trying to formulate the sentence. "Not exactly but-" "You're not from here, right?" Now you looked at her more directly. "How did you know?"
Her gaze went down and up over your figure, making you smile embarrassedly, of course, your clothes and your whole appearance.
"Nevermind" You approached the desk, which functioned as a counter, somewhat unsure of your steps. "Do you know where I can find the postman's office?" The blonde smiled, a small chuckle came out of her lips, making you doubt your words a little. "There is no postman here, are you a postwoman or something?" you quickly denied. "Oh no no, actually i-"
A loud bang sounded on the roof, a little far from where you were, you looked at the woman but more closely, she was very pretty despite her cold and irritated face. Her eyes rolled around, releasing a deep sigh.
"Wait here, yeah? I'll see if they broke my roof again" She left at a hurried pace, your gaze wandering to her long, wavy blonde hair that moved with a cold grace, something that caught your attention.
You quickly shook off your thoughts and looked around again, you hadn't asked her name, something unusual for you knowing that it was manners you had learned from home since a very young age.
The slamming of the wooden door brought you back to your senses, hearing agitated sighs.
"Oh my dear sister, you're here!" Jesper lunged forward, wrapping his arms around you, blocking any movement you could make with your arms. "What happened? or rather, what did you do? The blond walked away exaggerating that he was offended. "Nothing! That boatman told me that i had to ring the bell for a welcome" "Only clueless people like you wouldn't know that that guy just wanted to tease you"
Before you could continue your conversation, the woman shouted from a distance, warning the supposed new client that she'll be right back.
You didn't know at what moment you now found yourself between a scared Jesper and an angry blonde woman who from what you heard, is a teacher.
"So this man is your brother?!" Alva exclaimed with a knife in hand. "Yeah-" "Younger Brother, actually, I'm not that old" You rolled your eyes.
A brief silence fell and a mocking smile appeared on her lips.
"It's obvious, she's definitely not dumb as you" You looked at the blonde with a smile. "Hey! As my older sister you are supposed to defend me." "It's supposed but I don't want to"
The little discussion was interrupted by the entrance of the boatman, All three eyes were on him.
"There you are! Oh, Morning Miss Alva"
Days had passed after that meeting, while Jesper was trying to get the 6000 cards, you were trying to cook for both and even helping, leaving your comfort zone.
Now you were cutting some paper figures or well, trying.
"I can't do it, Alva, sorry!" You said dropping the scissors on the table, a loud laugh came from her diaphragm. "Hey, you didn't even try to cut!" The smile on her lips, you didn't think you'd see it so soon.
You returned to your position behind the desk, taking the scissors again in your hand, weren't used to cutting because nannies or maids helped you ever since.
"Let me help you" You felt her breath on your neck, tightening your breathing, her hands resting on each of yours. Her hands took yours and began to guide you.
You were so immersed in your thoughts and emotions, Why was your heart beating hard? Why are you feeling this way? Her warmth, the attention she gave you and the kindness was so... charming.
There was an obvious comparison of how she acted with Jesper and you and the difference was noticeable.
"And it's done" You blinked repeatedly, your gaze once again focused on what you were doing. "Oh! yeah thank you"
The gaze of both collided, you felt your breathing agitate and you could bet that your pupils dilated. You slowly lowered your gaze until you saw, out of the corner of your eye, the sparkle of the small diamond in the ring in your finger, your body moved.
"Are you engaged?" A knot began to form in your throat. "I... it's complicated" A smile appeared in your lips but her gaze was as if it had fallen, you didn't want to get your hopes up.
You were going to speak but Jesper appeared making Alva move away from you, feeling an emptiness in your stomach.
"Sorry Alva but I'll steal my sister from you" Jesper came in, taking softly of your arm pulling at him. "Don't worry, How are you doing with the letters?" Carefully she took the figures and stacked them in the corner of her desk. "Pretty good, Mr. Klaus and I are doing a good job" Something you had to recognize is the change of mentality that Jesper was unconsciously having, he was maturing and you were happy for him but, you're not going to lie, you're feeling stuck.
"Well, i'll take my sister, see you!" Your arm and body was pulled outside the school, giving Alva a last look. "See you, Alva" your tone was soft and almost tragic.
The way to the post office was silent, your gaze was down and Jesper was looking at you occasionally, a sigh came out of his lips.
"What will you do?" His question made you look up. "What do you mean?" "I always wondered why you never had a boyfriend but i found the answer on my own but now, what will you do?" The sound of snow in your boots stopped, both of you standing in the middle of an alley.
"You're engaged" Your gaze was fixed on him, you sighed. "It's not going to change anything, we'll be at home in the end." The sound of footsteps in the snow was heard again thanks to you, starting to walk again but Jesper's hand was taking your shoulder, making you stop.
"You have advised and motivated me to achieve the 6000 letters but now it's my turn, from brother to sister" The height difference was funny, being older than him and at the same time you were slightly shorter; you raised your gaze a little bit. "You don't know your fiancé, you only got engaged to please our dad by having heirs and descendants but let's be honest, even if you get married and are with him, you will still think about Alva"
the scene invaded your mind, a man you created in your mind, lying next to you in a big bed, you looking at him. Inside the scenario, the memory of that blonde teacher invaded the mind of even your hypothetical self, putting your head in your hands thinking that you were just his wife but never his lover and you know you were never be.
You snapped out of your thoughts, Jesper looked at you with empathy.
"Let's finish the letter's goal, shall we?" You smiled painfully, continuing on your way to the post office and also a temporary home for both of you.
You felt your stomach in knots, the presence of your father in the middle of Smeerensburg, seeing both Jesper and you, surrounded by the Sámi, Klaus and Alva.
Alva please don't see, you thought.
"I'm glad to know that you achieved the goal" He slowly approached Jesper and you stood still in your place. "And i'm glad you managed to motivate him" You closed your eyes heavily, feeling how the knot of your stomach was getting harder.
"Motivate him?" The way Alva got the question out of her mouth made your heart sink. "You knew everything" The pain in your heart was almost like a knife penetrating your heart again and again. "I could explain-" "It's already explained" a bitter smile was being drawn on her lips, tears already getting a threat to overflowing on your cheeks.
Jesper wrapped his arm protectively around your shoulders, giving you comfort, he felt so guilty.
Márgu's cries made your heart shrink even more. Everyone started to leave but Alva didn't.
Alva's gaze was a mixture of emotions, disappointment and anger.
"Alva" Your lips trembled but she didn't respond.
"We have to go, your wedding will be soon" Your father's voice behind you made small tears and spasms begin to make themselves known, Alva's gaze softened.
But she didn't say anything.
With resignation, you turned around, still hugging Jesper, leaving with your father and packing your things.
"Please, choose" She said softly, smoke rising from her warm interior, turning cold as it left her lips. A hand resting on her shoulder, looking up with tears welling up, Klaus gave her a comforting look.
A while passed and now your clothes were changed, your eyes and lips slightly swollen. The white of the light snow on the path managed to match your white clothes, white that you had to be prepared to wear in a long and beautiful dress.
"I'm sorry for dragging you into this" Jesper's voice brought you out of your thoughts, you turned to look at him, still hadn't lost your posture. "I had no choice" You smiled but didn't last long.
Jesper smiled. "Be the rebel now, i'll try to cover you, in the end you deserve to decide for yourself and be happy" As his sentence finished being formulated, tears came out of your eyes, with a quick movement you gave him a hug. "I swear that i didn't imagine you saying this kind of things" You joked. "And I know that you also have already found your happiness"
Your brother couldn't answer but it was enough to make him think too, you left your bags on the dock, running desperately to the school. Your low-heeled boots tried to destabilize you but it was impossible, your persistence was more than anything.
Your breathing began to be irregular, tears dried from the cold wind generated by your running, you turned streets and climbed stairs feeling your legs go numb.
"Where are you going?" Her voice rang your ears.
Your gaze connected with hers again, her eyes just as swollen as yours, you smiled starting to feel large drops fall from your eyes to the ground and soaking your cheeks. The silence was like an answer to her question, just by seeing the state of both was the answer.
"Alva-" you were silenced.
Her hand was on your cheek, brushing your hair that was already out of your harmonious hairstyle. Her lips were on yours, the dry sound of the ring falling was heard, she had maneuvered with her other hand to remove that jewel that kept you imprisoned to a destiny that didn't was yours.
The cold became like a romantic blanket, the warmth of both of your blushes managed to keep them at a balanced temperature.
And finally, you could choose.
