hiyaa!! i use photoshop which, and i cannot express this enough, no one should use unless they can get a discount or find through uhhh less than legal means. i like the program! it is 100% not worth it unless you need it for uni or a job and are using it literally all the time like i am. it is not beginner friendly, its not anyone friendly really.
BUT i used procreate for like 5 years and its a very very solid program, the ui is a little funny to navigate but i think thats the case with like all drawing programs when you first pick them up. anyway some general tips:
- just like you would traditionally, practice drawing with your whole arm not just your wrist. thats what gets you strong confident lines. i think with digital its pretty easy to get caught up in the control you have with lines after the fact and to forget the importance of having confidence in your lines from the start. i personally try to avoid editing my lines after the fact (with the transform tool and stuff) but its a tool thats there to be used, its not like an all or nothing situation. also for the same reason, stay zoomed out. especially with sketching and lines, avoid getting too into details or else you can sometimes lose the greater form of a piece? if that makes sense? basically, staying zoomed out lets you create a more consistent whole.
- big one!! BACK UP YOUR FILES!! put them on the cloud, put them on a hard drive, but especially with procreate back them up. procreate files are stored on the app, which means if the app gets deleted or something happens to your device theyre gone. one christmas my entire ipad was entirely wiped and 3 years of art was gone and i cried. i got it back but it was awful terrible and incredibly stressful. i still forget to back up my files though lol.
- try get in the habit of picking your colours carefully and not only using overlays to unify your colours, i love an overlay layer, theyre objectively an awesome tool. but you have much better control of your own art and the feel of the colours if you can start to understand how to colour and shade without using an overlay. im trying to practice this myself and its hard but i think its paying off!!
- very specific but play with the stabilisation on your brushes. i draw with 0% smoothing (which i think is controversial lol) but i hate the artificial resistance, i feel it limits my arm movement. figure out what works for you though. a lot of my early problems with digital were because i found the default brush settings limiting.
procreates awesome cause there are about a million people making a billion different brushes for it. try out a shit ton of brushes to find what you like. i like this set personally:
sorry i cant get more specific, hope this all helps a bit though! heres a lo'ak i did to prove to myself i could still use procreate lol
