Thinking about the boys joining a beer league years after they retire. They retire in the first place to start and take care of their family so for a while they’re just totally focused on that, expanding the Game Changers camps and the foundation. After a while, though, they start to get the itch to play again. They could coach and get back into it that way but they want to get back on the ice not stand on the sidelines with a clipboard.
They find a local beer league full of other middle aged dads and guys who “could have made it in the show if they didn’t blow out their knee senior year” and of course all of these guys are like HOLY SHIT HOLLANDER AND ROZANOV??? YES YES YOU CAN JOIN OH MY GOD. This is, of course, a Big Mistake.
Because of their well documented history, everyone expects Ilya to be the problem child. He does spend a fair amount of time in the penalty box but ultimately has a good enough time and he's happy to be playing again without the real pressure of doing this for his job… it’s Shane that turns out to be the real problem. Even after all these years, he’s still SO fucking serious about hockey and these guys just don’t fucking GET IT. He’s throwing out chirps left and right, shit that cuts right to the bone, to both the other team and his own team. This is how everyone learns that Shane Hollander is a BITCH. He's got no career on the line, no perfect image to uphold, so going to tell you suck, exactly WHY you suck and he's going to do it with a straight face and a monotone voice that makes it SO much worse somehow oh my GOD?? Like yeah sure the team is winning more than they have in years but at what cost? He lasts half a season before he is asked to leave and banned from rejoining because you can't make your own teammates cry, man, even if you didn't mean to and what you said is objectively true it's just not cool, bro, this is supposed to be just for fun. Ilya tries to quit in solidarity with his husband but Shane tells him it's ok and to keep playing because he knows Ilya was having a great time. Now he comes to every game with their daughters and cheers on his husband with giant glitter and sticker covered poster board signs that say GO PAPA GO!
