Starting a list of what Bones cut out/changed from BSD
- Atsushi calling Akutagawa a lawnmower (cut)
- how Dazai and Fyodor communicated in prison (cut)
- Sigma's introduction (cut)
- Tachihara's hair actually being black, it's just dyed (changed so it's like he's always had red hair)
- Ranpo, Chuuya, & Sigma's eye colors (changed; brown to green, brown to blue, grey to pink)
- specifying that Q is non-binary (cut, clearly transphobia)
- Mori saying 'I only protect women under 12' to 'I prefer the women in my life to be under 12' (changed)
- Junichirou's tanktop to the lining of his shirt (changed)
Well, I need a part 2 for this, thank you everyone, this post is LONG!!! And spoilers, obviously.
- but first, Q is ABSOLUTELY canonically non-binary. Non-binary/transfem characters are automatically cut to male in translation because transphobia. This is not the first time Bones has done this with an explicitly non-binary character, my poor Crona Gorgon. There's even a whole WAN! chapter dedicated to their gender, and it ends with 'oh they're just Q, their gender doesn't matter' ! Gahhh you fucks!!!!

Alright here is everything (I remember) that they changed in 15! My memory of 15 is really bad so I'm going to miss a lot of things and second-guess myself, I will be relying on you guys 💔

I'm rereading the manga as well and everything genuinely makes much more sense?? like, all those cuts in anime made the story much more confusing, literally what is the point.
I also hate how there's lack of body diversity (dazai's broad shoulders, chuuya's muscles, natsume cat body, lines on faces, their nose shapes HAVE YOU SEEN CHUUYAS SIDE PROFILE IN EARLY MANGA) WHY IS EVERYONE TWINKS ahem anyway, Harukawa really put effort in her designs and specifically eyes - which in anime all look basically the same on all characters, like you could mistake mori and fyodor for each othereasily and I actually find this disrespectful to Harukawa (changed)
but others things worth mentionining:
in dead apple I think that the scene where Chuuya punched Dazai because dazai saw one of the executive's death as an opportunity to get a promotion as an executive was completely cut out. Dazai says that that hurt him because he is a human too, to which Chuuya says that no one would believe that. That scene is important and so tragic, especially if you know anything about stormbringer (cut)
they changed prison uniforms in meaursault from being a full suit to a two part piece...for some reason (changed)
That last scene at the end of s5 with Akutagawa and Atsushi (against ame no gozen) where it was said that there had been a 2 hour timeskip yet with part 1 in manga already ended there wasnt anything mentioned about the timeskip (also, I think Atsushi said something like "just the two of us?" and aku said "we dont need any more", which hadn't been said in manga.....but im saying all this off top of my head and its 2am, freely correct me but I remember discourses about this topic on twitter) (changed/added/unsure?)
in manga dazai has an iphone while in anime they gave him nokia lol (changed)
I feel like they overall made Dazai less expressive and more nonchalant than in manga, such as in 15 arc he seemed much more older and serious than he actually was, and in meaursalt arc where he would show genuine shock, worry, reactions to his failures etc in manga, but in anime I feel like those emotions were shown minimally to focus on the plot
I need people to make Beast Dazai silly cause I dunno who this serious mr cool guy is supposed to be but that’s not Dazai at all. The most foundational part of Osamu Dazai as a character is that he’s a fucking loser. He’s simultaneously both a genius and a dumb arse.
I need the Port Mafia to respect him as their leader but also question his sanity at every given moment. His plans work but they’re insane cause he’s insane. He also frequently makes up things on the spot and decides his next move by how much it’ll piss off Chuuya.
I need him to flirt really well with a target and then throw up in the bushes after because he can’t stomach a genuine compliment. He rolls himself up in the rug of his office and calls it his thinking cocoon. Chuuya has to drag him kicking and screaming to do his paperwork and laughs at how miserable it makes him.
He gets late for a crucial mission because a dog was chasing him (he antagonised it first.) He puts his bandage on the wrong eye and then gaslights everyone into thinking it’s the right one. He will show up to work after being shot but take the month off after getting a paper cut.
He gives his orders in riddles and then cries himself to sleep when no one gets them. He trips over his own scarf and just lays there wishing the floor could swallow him whole. He loves everyone around him but he’s emotionally constipated to say it to their face so he sings their praises to everyone else.
Like yes Dazai is the terrifying shadowy boss of The Port Mafia who will make your life hell for even breathing wrong. But he’s also a mess of a human being who definitely has eaten dog food to prove a point.
i really hope we'll see more Higuchi content in future, because she had a lot of screen time in early volumes, but later...not much, not only that, but her arc about thinking she wasn't suitable for mafia was interesting, we barely know about her, we don't know her ability and she was the first member of the port mafia we've seen like hello
